Lots of Veg Options

Hugo’s is your typical heavily Americanized Mexican food. To me, it’s nostalgic, but it’s also on the side of bland and ultimately nothing amazing. The menu is huge (per usual for these kinds of restaurants), but their unique feature is the abundance of vegan options. We ordered carne asada nachos, a trio of veggie enchiladas, a bean and cheese burrito (I added nopalas), and a strawberry margarita. The food itself was good, but nothing extraordinary, and in general, it was missing some flavor. The rice, surprisingly, was the best part of the night and had a bit more flavor than anything else. The produce was fresh. The strawberry margarita was yummy.

The staff was very friendly, accommodating, and understanding of veganism. I personally would not go out of my way to eat here, especially considering the better vegan options in the area, but if you’re in the area, craving this kind of food, or need an accommodating place for nonveg people, this is your spot.

Very good, homemade

I the food is delicious! Very authentic Mexican cuisine in the vegan version. I had sweet potato burrito (it came with the whole west fresh tortilla), tofu enchilada ( it had a tomato sauce made with the fresh tomatoes) and veggie tamale (so good!). Cons - they serve animal products as well and their to go containers are plastic.
We will come back! #Veganuary

Pros: Lots of marked vegan options , Authentic, homemade , fresh ingredients , Good taste

Cons: Serves animal food too

The best!

Whenever we are traveling to San Diego, Hugo’s is the center point for us. Breakfast burritos let you explore the city or the beach for many hours.

Pros: A lot of vegan options, Friendly staff, Smol patio

Great food

Got the combo plate with the soy chorizo tacos, Spanish rice and refried beans. The food was flavorful and delicious! So many clearly labeled vegan options on the menu too and service was quick. Free chips and salsa too!

It’s good- but could be better

Large vegan selection, while the food was good it was lacking a bit. The carne was tasty but overall I felt the California burrito as a whole was a bit bland. The chips were meh, and the salsa tasted like their was tequila in it. My 4yo really enjoyed her carne taco.

Pros: Lots of vegan options

Cons: tad bland

OK Mexican Food in Ocean Beach

As other reviewers have noted, there are LOTS of vegan options at Hugo's and the portions are huge. Sadly, that does not make for a great meal and nowhere is that more evident than Hugo's Cocina.

When it comes to the food itself, it's just OK. Most items were fairly bland. The vegan enchilada trio came with 1 each of tofu, avocado and bean enchiladas and plenty of refried beans and rice. The enchiladas were all under seasoned as was an order of potato taquitos.

With so many Mexican restaurants in San Diego, there's no reason to return to Hugo's the next time I'm in town.

So delicious!!!

After eating the saddest little California burrito yesterday at Evolution, I decided to double down and try Hugo's version and WOW was it night and day. A full size burrito packed with fries, delicious faux carne asada and guac. YES

Not great

Lots of vegan options, but I wasn't happy with the food. The mushrooms in my taco were so rubbery I couldn't chew them, the burrito was bland, and everything was large portions so we wasted a lot of food. Unfortunately I don't recommend this restaurant.

exceptional Mexican with 95% vegan options

Enough said! Absolutely amazing. I brought 5 vegans and 2 carnivores and we all loved it! I met Hugo, wonderful man. I'd give 5 stars if the app would allow. I will be back often!

Pros: 95% vegan options, carnivore options

Cons: I would like another cheese option than Daiya

Not the most flavorful

I got the shiitake tacos and it originally said vegan but it came with dairy cheese. The waiter was nice and took it back but didnt give me new tacos for 20 minutes. Pretty dissapointed but they gave us the tacos for free so that was good.

Pros: Nice staff, Many options

Cons: Not great taste

I was so excited about this place!! They had a ton of vegan options, it was hard to choose. This is a great spot to go with someone who is not a vegan/vegetarian because there will be plenty of options for both of you. I got the vegan enchiladas, one sweet potato and one egg plant and they were both fabulous. The rice and beans are vegan also which is usually where Mexican food is a problem...The salsa is also outstanding. I could have drank that stuff. It was an overall wonderful dining experience. Love me some vegan Mexican food.

Pros: Vegan options, Flavor, Salsa!!!

I used to go here when it was still Ranchos. Luckily, many of the same people are working here and I can get the same food I ordered in the past.

Pros: vast menu with a large number of vegan options, friendly service, easy to make substitutions or have them add things

Cons: they don’t have their liquor license as of Septemb

Amazing soyrizo quesadilla!

I almost overlooked this due to the low average but glad I didn't! It was conveniently located near Ocean Beach and also appealed to my omni family. I tried the soyrizo quesadilla, vegan fish taco and vegan chicken enchilada. The quesadilla was the best of them so I highly recommend you try that one!

They also do vegan dessert but I was too full to try any
