Solid junk foods PLUS great salad?! - Edit
I was on a road trip, so I'll review in the order I ate: fries with a side of vegan special sauce--everything I wanted from a French fry; super crisp. Vegan 9 to 5 salad--AMAZING. ingredients weren't anything unusual, but the combo was really nice, and hit the spot in a road trip. Vegan olive burger--probably would have liked better if I tried it first, but still solid. All the individual components were good--the burger and bacon were almost freakily real, and the truffle cream cheese tasted legit. However, I realized I don't really like cream cheese with a burger. I wish I had room for a shake, but sadly did not. There was a little grassy walking area by a creek in back, which was nice before I got back in the car. The only downside was the ordering system, which was kind of confusing (ingredients don't show until you swipe up and back down) and time consuming.

Hot Chip Burger Bar EASILY has the best vegan burgers and selection south of the metro and is a serious contender for the best vegan burger restaurant in Minnesota. It already won the 2024 Best Burger Place award by Rochester Magazine.

The cool thing about this restaurant is that it is connected to the Boxcar Hippie Burrito Bar, which also has a lot of vegan options. So, if you’re with a group, or are undecided yourself, you can come here and have many choices all in one location.
The Vegan Classic Burger was fantastic. The Vegan Nachos were delicious, fun and filling. The Vegan Cookie Dough Shake was the real deal. There is great value overall when comparing the large portion sizes and price.

I had the vegan Lebowski. It was incredibly messy and also delicious. Fresh popped popcorn included was awesome. The patio was nice.

Read moreI got the Mr. Lebowski (my husband really appreciates the movie references in the menu), because I am a big fan of mushrooms and smoked flavor, plus vegan bacon, and it delivered good mushroom flavor, but probably needs a tad more smokiness to really be noticeable. The sauce on the burger was pretty nice, but the raw onion rings really destabilize the burger and everything kept slipping out of it as I attempted to eat it until I removed them (maybe if they were lightly grilled that could add some smoky flavor and make them soft enough to not send things sliding?), and then it held together a bit better. I had the side of seasoned fries, which are really just shoestrings with some seasoning shaken onto them, and they were okay. I split a vegan chocolate shake with my husband, which was definitely the way to go because even between the two of us it was a little too much, LOL. I also tried a bit of his side of broccoli (not vegan since it has cheese, but can be veganized based on menu markings) and that was pretty nice, too. He wasn't that hungry, so he just had the broccoli and sweet potato fries (which he liked a lot and I didn't get to sample, LOL) with the shake.
The location is very much a bar type environment, with a beer garden for outdoor dining. The Paris Olympics were playing on one of the many screens (none of which have closed captioning), and the music was pretty loud both inside and out, but the wait staff were very friendly and helpful. The kiosk ordering system in the front is nice for making sure you can customize your burgers exactly how you like them 😊

Best burgers in Rochester - Edit
Hot chip has the best burgers in the area hands down. Lots of options plus a build your own. For sides my favorite is the vegan 9-5 salad. There are also vegan kids options that are relatively affordable.

Oh, so good. They know burgers, and they make them right. There are plenty of choices, just make sure you are on the vegan menu. The Mr. Lebowski is especially good. I also love their vegan nachos. Their sauces are great, and getting a little popcorn is a fun touch. The shakes are not the best I’ve had, but they are still pretty good. Definitely recommend.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. I loved my vegan impossible burger but would also like to see a lower fat version of a vegan burger too. Outside area was wonderful. Will definitely go back.

Their topping combinations are unique and creative, they have a decent beer list (with local options), and the servers are all friendly and helpful. I ordered the Mr Lebowski, which was super good. I wish I would have ordered the vegan nachos as well.

5 Star Food and Service! - Edit
My wife and I were looking for a vegan place close to our hotel and were lucky enough to find Hot Chip! You can order your food from a kiosk and they will bring it to you at a table or you can sit at the bar. We decided to sit at the bar and were promptly served with menus. We ordered our beers (very nice selection) and to our pleasant surprise, the bartender gave us a bag of popcorn!!! Due to the pandemic, a lot of places have stopped providing popcorn but at Hot Chip, they pop it and put it into bags to pass out. A huge plus for us. We ordered the Vegan Nachos and our burgers. The Vegan Nachos were a very nice size and very good. Like a lot of nacho servings, the good stuff is on top but the chips were very good by themselves. I ordered the classic cheeseburger which had a great sauce (big kudos to the bartender who recommended it and got me an extra side of it). My wife had the Mind If I Smoke burger and thought it was really good. My sweet potato tots were good and the sauce made a nice dipping sauce for them. We will definitely be back to the Hot Chip the next time we are in Rochester!
