Jackfruit - Edit
I am in Reno for a business trip and wanted to try this place out. Got the vegan jackfruit tacos- pretty dang good in my opinion. I also got the garlic hummus (no feta)- a little bit too much oil on top but overall a good flavor.

Paying lip service to Vegan diners - Edit
We went out with our family from Minnesota to Homegrown hoping for a decent vegan meal in a city that, frankly, doesn’t offer many.
Read moreSadly, our experience only confirmed a pattern I’ve seen too often: restaurants offering token plant-based dishes that look good on the plate but fall apart—literally and figuratively—when it comes to taste and execution.
As a longtime vegan, accomplished plant-based chef, and someone who cooks for a non-profit, I’ve completed formal training and had the privilege of being mentored by two local chefs - including one James Beard honoree. I understand the pressures and challenges of the professional kitchen. That said, there’s no excuse for what we were served.
My husband’s jackfruit tacos arrived perched in a taco rack, buried under so much minced garnish you couldn’t even see the filling. The tortillas were limp and wet, collapsing the moment he tried to pick one up. The filling, once uncovered, was bland and flavorless—completely devoid of the potential jackfruit can offer when properly seasoned and cooked.
My own meal—a kimchi “wrap”—was equally uninspired. The kimchi was dry and chewy, lacking the fresh tang and crunch that would have made it compelling. The protein was likely an Impossible patty, but it was hard to tell, smothered as it was in guacamole and stuffed into a pita pocket. Once again, a mountain of garnish made it nearly impossible to access the food without first scraping it all away. Roy Choi would've laughed at this sad attempt at Korean-Latin fusion.
Both dishes looked beautiful on their way to the table - Instagram worthy were it not for the dim lighting - but the performance ended there. (I didn't want to disturb other diners with a camera flash). This was all culinary 'theatre' with no substance behind the curtain. The flavors were muddled or simply absent, and the textures poorly handled. It didn’t feel like anyone in the kitchen had actually tested these dishes before serving them.
Sadly, this restaurant, like too many others, fails to note a growing demand for sustainable, healthy food… essentially leaving money on the table. Great vegan food isn’t hard. It simply takes an establishment that has the desire to do it.
The server took the charge for my husband’s meal off the tab but made no effort to do anything more. Essentially a ‘shoulder shrug’ response.

Pros: Seated quickly , Drink order filled in a timely manner , Interesting aesthetic
Cons: The prices don’t reflect the value of the food, Server didn’t ask why my husband didn’t like meal, No attempt to offer another dish

Several options - Edit
Staff were really kind and there were a variety of vegan options.
Read moreI had the vegan jackfruit tacos with chili on the side and seasonal kombucha which was delicious!
The tacos were ok. The chili had great flavor which I enjoyed more.
When asked if we’d like dessert, I asked if they had any vegan options and our sever said they no longer carried any.

Many options, excellent falafel - Edit
Loved that they had multiple and clearly marked vegan options. I had the red lentil falafel, which was excellent and a huge meal that fed me for like 2 days 😂 Drinks were excellent as well, and cozy atmosphere for winter dates. #Veganuary

Multiple thoughtful and delicious veg dishes - Edit
We stopped in super late after a long drive on a road trip, and they were kind enough to seat us 30 minutes before closing. The food was phenomenal, and the service was great! My husband had the jackfruit tacos and I had the red lentil falafel, the jackfruit tacos were really good but the falafel was exceptional (the falafel itself was really well seasoned and the avocado almond dressing that came with it was delicious too). Menu was clearly marked with thoughtful vegan and vegetarian dishes.

Better this time... - Edit
Summer 2023 update:
Read moreFound myself in Midtown looking for a quick bite nearby and wound up giving Homegrown Gastropub a try again. Glad I did! Food was much better than my last visit. Tried the vegan pizza option, brussels and mac 'n cheese (not vegan). All were quite good! Not great, but definitely a step above what I've experienced in my previous visits. As before, service, atmosphere, drinks all continue to be top-notch.
Original review:
I really, really wanted to like Homegrown Gastropub. It seems so much up my alley: local, organic, veggie options, more hipster than hippie granola.
But I've been several times now, and I've just been super disappointed by the food every time. Service is great, drinks are inventive and delicious, fun atmosphere... but the food just _way_ misses the mark. Wasn't expecting amazing, but not even decent. Falafel was bland, tacos were unimpressive, pizza was an undercooked doughy mess. How can you have a brick oven and not cook a pizza properly?
Food: two stars
Everything else: five stars
I'd go back for drinks and maybe a snack. Probably would not visit for a meal again unless I hear they've upped their food game.

First time in Reno and I wanted to take out some non veggie family members. Hometown was perfect as everyone liked their food. I got a falafel with fries. They also have breakfast which I'd like to try.

Loved the vegan BBQ ‘Pulled Pork’ Bahn Mi! - Edit
Came here for a meet-up dine-out during the Vegan Chef Challenge (January 2023) and was torn between the vegan BBQ ‘Pulled Pork’ Bahn Mi! and the Sesame Crusted Tofu Steak. I ordered the Bahn Mi with others ordering the Tofu steak and everyone seemed to enjoy their choices. We weren't really wowed by the Pineapple Upside Down Cake, but I was still happy to have a vegan dessert option other than berries or sorbet. Great atmosphere, but the back room did seem to have cigarette smoke filtering in from somewhere the night we were there which was a bit of a bummer. My non-vegan husband and I have come here many times before because the menu is very inclusive for both of us. Love that the vegan options are clearly marked and the late-night hours as so many spots in Reno tend to close on the earlier side.

5 Stars! Has you covered from Brunch to Midnight Eats! - Edit
I love that there is a classy go to place for vegans to grab amazing and creative food. I have had the vegan eggs benedict for brunch and lentil falafel tacos for a later dinner and both have been amazing. On other occasions I've stopped by for boozy vegan milkshakes and chili soup. I have never been disappointed here and love the general vibe.

Not Great on Repeat... - Edit
Oh how the mighty has quickly fallen.
Read moreMy first time at Homegrown, I fell in love with their vegan pizza. I even claimed it to be one of the best vegan pizzas I had in a very long time - if ever. I remember the chimichurri sauce and combination of flavors were out of this world and I left wanting more.
Fast forward to this most recent trip and the pizza was a complete meh. There was barely any sauce on our dry flat bread of a pizza, the veggies seemed under-seasoned, and where was the garlic? It was as if I was eating a frozen pizza that had been thawed and baked in the oven. I was so disappointed when I had fallen in love with the pizza so much the first time.
To top it off, we ordered the Vegan Benedict and it wasn't anything worthwhile either. We left Homegrown somewhat satiated but definitely unsatisfied, so much we went somewhere else to have a second lunch.
After this last time, I don't plan on ever coming back.
Pros: Vegan options are clear on menu
Cons: Options were bland

Overpriced and bad vibes - Edit
Luckily I wasn’t very hungry when I came here, so I just had a mango smoothie and a small salad. The smoothie had little bits of plastic in it I had to spit out and the server was surly when I asked for another one. They also didn’t react well to asking for a replacement water glass because one of hours had a fleck of food in it when we sat down. I worked in food service for a long time and try to be as polite and low maintenance as possible to waitstaff. But if there’s plastic in my beverage or food in my glass, it’s not a crime to say something! Jfc. Also it was expensive for what both my omni partner and I got. We don’t live in Reno but I’m assuming Midtown has far better veg fare to offer than this. Wish I’d read the reviews before coming.

Expensive and Bland - Edit
I got the Hummus plate as my main entree because their other menu items didn't entice me, and wow was i upset with it. SEVENTEEN dollars for it and the hummus was bland yet way too oily, baguettes were hard, and there were barely enough veggies. It was so disappointing. I definitely will not be getting that again and will only go back if my omni friends make me. The one thing I did enjoy was the vegan rootbeer float that I got, but I mean how can you mess that up?

Not great - Edit
I took my partner here for a fun, different Valentine’s dinner. He got the jackfruit tacos and I got the vegan pizza and both were kinda bland. Not the experience I was hoping for. The vegan chocolate shake was delicious but I wouldn’t shell out the $9 for it if it weren’t a special occasion.

Not enough vegan options - Edit
I was so excited to try this place, it had a fun atmosphere and friendly service but the food was not good at all. They only have three vegan options on the lunch menu and their vegan chocolate milkshake was thin and granular. I was famished but I didn’t even finish my food or my milkshake because it was that awful

Good spot for something different - Edit
This restaurant definitely does a good job of offering something different than you'll find elsewhere in Reno. We tried it during the Vegan Chef Challenge during April and sampled three or four dishes from the vegan-specific menu. A couple of these items were actually on the regular menu as well. While the food was very good, it was also on the pricy side and very small. We spent nearly twice what we normally do for lunch and left feeling a bit hungry. Additionally, we found all the dishes to be saltier than they needed to be. Other than that, it was nice having something completely different and we will likely try them out again... maybe during the next vegan chef challenge when we know they've added more choices.

very cool spot! - Edit
located in a very interesting spot with funky decorations galore. i try the vegan benedict on pretty much every breakfast place i go to and this place had one of the best and most eclectic versions i've ever had! its gluten free so its base is a big very well spiced masa cake with a local farm tomato slice (they also have listed where they get a lot of their foods which is really cool) then a grilled tofu block on top which all gets covered in a delicious creamy cilantro lime "hollandaise" replacement. served with homefries and fresh avocado... woah. seriously good. they also had a lot of vegan desserts, including vegan ice cream which could be used in a soda float 💜 they had classic root beer, cola and orange sodas but i got mine with a strawberry rhubarb seltzer and it was BOMB.

Great vegan options - Edit
We recently went to the Homegrown Gastropub and it was fantastic. The ambience is vintage cozy. The vegan food is delicious. My spouse had the jackfruit tacos and I had the portobello stack. I do not usually like tacos, but these were amazing and I will order them for myself next time. The portobello stack is extremely tasty and is a generous portion. We also had two vegan desserts, the brownie with vegan ice cream and the blueberry and lemon cake. Both were scrumptious. We will definitely go again.

Lives up to Gastropub expectations. - Edit
Although meat dishes served here, not typical vegan options even though does have falafel and special portobellos sandwich. A couple of options for each breakfast, lunch and dinner, made from scratch with unique recipes. Vegan Benedict sauce was not a “hollandaise” instead yummy crema and lots of it. Looking forward to going back to try jackfruit tacos!!
