Imaginative, delicious dishes

I, and my non-vegan friends, were impressed by the starter dishes we shared. The shaved brussels sprouts with toasted almonds, mint and lemon were so delicious, I could have enjoyed it for my dinner instead of a pasta entree. The griddl’d cauliflower with cauliflower “tahini,” and walnut raisin caper relish was a favorite. The cool wax beans didn’t excite me at first. But when I took my first bite, I wished we had ordered more. I savored the flavors of fresh serrano chile, toasted hazelnuts and frenchie vinaigrette. My main course, the spaghetti pomodoro with fresh basil and plump garlic cloves was pretty special. I enjoyed twirling the spaghetti and mopping up the sauce with the focaccia bread. My only complaints are that the sauce, while quite tasty, was oily and the portion of spaghetti could have been larger. The coconut chip ice cream was a great way to finish the meal.

Pros: Tasty vegan dishes , Vegan and vegan options clearly marked on menu , Casual, comfortable outdoor dining

Cons: Not 100% vegan , Menu needs more vegan main courses

Great spot!

Hippo is a great find in Highland Park. Although it may not initially seem very vegan-friendly, they can do three different vegan pasta dishes (the tomato-based are amazing), and even make them gluten-free. If the tahini cauliflower starter is in-season you MUST get it. Good for big groups!

Pros: Lots of options, Great pasta

Cons: No protein, really
