Also makes vegan cheesy breadsticks, cinnamon breadsticks, BBQ tofu subs, and vegan calzones. This restaurant is Michigan family-owned, and the soda served is "Home Grown Faygo". Hippies Pizza - Vegan Pizza

So I have tried Hippies Pizza several times in the past, but I'm editing my post to be more up to date.

Atmosphere - This location is a bit small and tucked back away from the street. It's more like a hole in the wall than anything else. I miss the old staff.. I think the owner went from being admirably quirky to downright psychotic.

Meal - Their menu and topping options are impressive, but you are better off flipping coin than actually thinking your order will come in accurately. Of all my orders, about half have come out wrong, even when I ask for the simplest of options to make it easy for them.

Staff: The staff is rude about fixing their mistake, and don't think the owner will be any better. When you see that other side of Chris (the owner)... It's sad, because you can never look at Hippies the same, because they're definitely not the peace loving hippies you imagine when you hear about this place.

Owner is unstable and rabid

I was told by the owner to leave a poor review, so here it is. I've been a customer of Hippies since it was Pizzatallica, well over a decade. A week ago my friends and I ordered two pizzas a little after 1 a.m., they said it'd be an hour and a half. No big deal, we were happy to wait. the pizzas never showed up and nobody answered when we called to see what happened. Till now, we ordered every weekend, so I figured I'd bring it up the next time I called to get an explanation and see if they'd make it right. The owner Chris Culbertson yelled at me, unprovoked, for several minutes and told me to order a pizza or go leave a bad review. I've worked on and off in food service for over a decade, and I cannot recall anyone being that aggressive, unhinged, and generally toxic. I really liked their pizza, and we've probably spent $3000 there in the past year alone. I'll never order from there again and will tell everyone I can about what a nightmare that guy is. If there had been some sort of apology for the messed up order even that would have been enough. From the moment he was on the phone the guy was completely out of his mind. Your employees and customers deserve better than you. Get therapy Chris.

Pros: Topping selection

Cons: Owner is the Seinfeld soup [censored] and is proud of it

LOL, my delivery guy solicited his lawn care business to me a few years ago. Very sketchy, cash only. Probably not legal.

Incredibly dirty. Risk of food borne illness

While there my fiancé saw the employees touch a filthy door, money and then the toppings bare handed, and wiped his hands on his sweaty shirt.

Pros: Vegan options

Cons: Super dirty, no use of disposable gloves., employee touch money, door handle, and then food, Not very good

Horrible customer service. AVOID!!

Ordered a vegan pizza (second time ordering). I got a regular pizza with bacon and ham with regular cheese (not what I ordered). Called back to get it rectified, summarily blown off. Told me they got the order right. I sent them the receipt... Nothing. I never even got to mention it was badly under cooked.

At least my dog got a $30 snack.

AVOID AVOID AVOID

Cons: Horrific customer service

mediocre pizza

They have a very extensive menu with lots of vegan options. We got takeout (there's no seating). Both the crust (standard) and the whole pizza were mediocre. Reminded me of Little Cesar's, or similar fast food pizza. Their prices are quite high, so I don't anticipate ever coming back.

Thank Gary Yourofsky

Gary Yourofsky made a video about this place and I had to come check it out. Duuude. It was so good, I ate three pizzas all by myself. The gluten-free crust was SO GOOD. Everything was vegan and gluten-free. The vegan sausage was excellent. The owner was super chill.

Pros: Killer gluten-free crust, Great vegan cheese, Amazing vegan sausage

Cons: More expensive than normal pizza

super good but pricey

Very good vegan & gluten free pizzas! So happy that there is a place where it's not just one or the other, but both at once.
I got a small gf vegan pizza with veg chz, sauce, mushrooms and spinach. Very good!
My boyfriend got small gf/veg with v chz, sauce, v pepperoni, v Italian sausage, and tomatoes. He was really impressed at how good it was, him and his bro both agreed that real meat is totally unnecessary when you have alternatives like this!
My only complaint is the price, $40 for both. But that's what you pay for delicious convenient vegan food (until it gets more popular of course!)! Will definitely return.

Pros: gluten free , vegan , delicious

Cons: price

good vegan food. weird vibe.

So, let me start this by saying I'm not complaining about a Daiya pizza and vegan cinnamon breadsticks in Royal Oak Michigan! One of my husband's best friends live here so we always end up getting Hippies when we visit.

And we love it! It's tasty and I always return for more. The place definitely had tons of "character." Now the details.

PROS:

Daiya. Cinnamon sticks. Delicious dough. Vegan pizzas on the menu!

CONS:

The people who work here can be... Quirky! Maybe even slightly less than professional. For example:

When ordering vegan butter for the crust, we were told it wouldn't be as good as real butter. :)

She asked if we were both vegan and said it was "too bad" that we were, because she wanted to give us free buttery breadsticks. ;) Sadly their breadsticks aren't vegan.

The time it takes to make a pizza is a little lengthy. Last time we were promised 25 minutes. It ended up being 55. We waited in the cold and small waiting area with only a space heater while the workers bickered ... we felt super awkward.

Another time, when I called to order on the phone, I was told to "wait" because I was talking too fast and she couldn't take my order. At a normal pizza place, you could just say "a large X pizza with X" and they would understand. But Hippies is definitely not a normal pizza place. :) It's a special one.

Finally, I do think the food is a little expensive. It's around $20 for a medium vegan pizza... And from there, they up charge you $3.50 for vegan pepperoni.

The pizza here is a hidden gem in Michigan! I just would take your encounters with their workers not too seriously. And enjoy your vegan pizza. You will like it.

Pros: Daiya, cinnamon sticks (vegan)

Cons: wait time, slightly unprofessional staff, cost
