A Dining Disaster at Himalaya: A Cautionary Tale

A Dining Disaster at Himalaya: A Cautionary Tale

If you’re considering a visit to Himalaya, think again. Despite the inexplicable hype spouted by influencers and free newspaper reviewers, this restaurant delivers a dining experience marred by chaos, abuse, and shocking business practices.

A Chaotic Ambience and Overpriced Mediocrity

The food is, at best, average for Indian cuisine in Houston—overpriced and served with little care. Dishes prepared as leftovers for lunch reappear at dinner, noticeably drier and far less appealing. The dining area is devoid of any ambiance, overshadowed by a cluttered desk where the proprietor, known as Kaiser, sits conspicuously while employees rotate in a lethargic display, clearly disengaged from customer service.

The Owner: A Volatile and Abusive Force

Kaiser’s behavior is the linchpin of the restaurant’s downfall. His volatile, angry outbursts are as unpredictable as they are unprofessional. During our visit, he aggressively pushed additional, undisclosed charges—such as swapping complimentary naan for a garlic version at an extra cost—only to baffle us later with a final bill that was a jumbled mess of numbers and letters. When questioned about these discrepancies, he dismissed any concerns and refused to itemize costs, leaving us paying exorbitant amounts inflated by mysterious “service charges.”

Even more alarming was the public spectacle of his abusive treatment of a female guest. When she attempted to calmly explain that her bill was incorrect and that she hadn’t received her complimentary naan, Kaiser erupted into a tirade over an arbitrary tip percentage. His shouting and threatening demeanor not only ruined the meal but also left an indelible mark of disrespect and disregard for customer dignity.

Racist Remarks and Dishonest Business Practices

Beyond his anger, Kaiser’s conduct crosses into deeply problematic territory. His occasional racist comments and outright dishonest business practices reveal a troubling character that has no place in hospitality. The complete omission of his presence in Anthony Bourdain’s Houston segment speaks volumes—perhaps he was intentionally kept off camera for very good reasons.

Final Verdict: Avoid at All Costs

Between the average food, the disorganized service, and a proprietor who treats both guests and employees with blatant disrespect, dining at Himalaya is an experience best avoided. There are plenty of superior Indian restaurants in Houston.

Cons: Volatile Abusive Owner, Poor Service & Dishonest Business Practices, Lack of cleanliness

Great option!

The food came highly recommended by a coworker. This restaurant was even been recognized multiple times in Anthony Bourdain’s (Parts Unknown) as well as locals awards. It’s a really busy place, so you may want to call any time go orders in ahead of arrival to avoid a wait.

Pros: Vegan & Vegetarian options , Authentic flavor , Good customer service
