La Alacena - Edit

Definitely the go-to specialized 'health shop' in the area. Mostly vegetarian, with the exception of some sardines, and a lot of clearly marked vegan products.

More often than not they have something special or rare on offer, such as fresh shiitake or turmeric not too long ago. There's always something interesting for sale, sometimes more and sometimes less. They also an interesting selection of local products.

The owner is knowledgeable and speaks perfect English. She has many decades of experience and is well-known and well-regarded locally. Everybody knows her, both the locals and the expats. The place is quite busy.

They also sell fresh produce, but I can't recommend it as I don't like the lack of proper pricing, certification and possibility to weigh things yourself. Be careful, but it is very comfortable to have this available in La Alacena, although there are numerous raw vegan communities and organic farmers in the area with a local market on Thursdays and a number of other outlets.

Definitely the best place to shop in town, but you would be hard pressed to put together lunch and dinner for one week using only ingredients you bought at La Alacena. On the other hand, the ladies who run the shop seem more oriented towards herbal and alternative medicine and supplements than veganism, food as medicine and healthy diets, so that's the reason.

When it comes to their herbal medicine etc. aspect, I've hardly ever needed to consult them, but they have a lot of stuff, often there's even a lot of stuff I've never heard about before. I can spend 5 - 10 minutes looking through all that stuff with great interest, but ultimately there's hardly anything I need.

I've also talked a lot with both of the ladies who run the shop over the years, and especially the owner has always given very good response. She does know a lot of things about herbs, super foods and alternative medicine etc., this is obvious, and you don't have to feel embarrassed to ask for whatever strange product it is you might be looking for at the moment.

I've shopped there for many years without problems. They have a lot of regular clients and it's hardly ever empty. I recommend anybody on this site to visit the shop and check what she has from time to time, as it changes fast and a lot of the things she gets in are really quite interesting.

And they just get better and better. Some truly exceptional products. Quite decent munchies selection for huge no of 420 tourists around Orgiva.
