Perfect

You will probably need to be taken there by someone already 'in the know' to find it. Not that there's anything particularly clandestine about the place, but it would be incredibly hard to find for first-timers. It is located above a health food shop, which itself at first glance might be mistaken for any regular convenience store. Once found, it wil be usueful if you can speak Mandarin/Cantonese or are dining with somebody who can. This is because there are two ways you can eat there, and that there is a cheaper option may not be immediately apparent.

First, you can dine there in the usual restaurant-y fashion...get a menu and choose from a huge array of dishes (around 30-40rmb each); order rice, tea etc and you're away. The dishes are of very high quality for the price, and compare well to the more upmarket Buddhist restaurants that are becoming increasingly common in China. What they may lack in presentation next to those, they more than make up for in taste and general wholesomeness. The fake meats e.g. fish cutlets and sweet n sour pork are exceptional. The spicy mushroom hotpot is divine. Portions are all generous, and two dishes are ample for three people dining.

However, for anyone dining alone, or wanting somewhere cheap to dine regularly, they also do set dishes at 14RMB each. These aren't clearly advertised; sometimes there is a poster showing a choice of two different set meals for that day, sometimes there isn't. But what you get is usually some rice, some green vegetables and then a small portion of one of their regular dishes. This makes a good alternative to the regular Buddhist buffet that are another cheap, daily dining option. What you lose in choice compared to those, you make up for by having a proper set meal that includes a touch of regular restaurant food.

A great place with very helpful (non-English speaking) staff that comes fully recommended for both cheap daily dining and regular restaurant experience.

Pros: Food, Price, Staff
