SKORDALIA is the G.O.A.T.!!!

Get the SKORDALIA and the RED BEET SKORDALIA. Trust me. You will probably sweat garlic for days, but it’s worth it. I grew up on Shelter Island and have come here my whole life. There are a lot of other vegan apps, and the falafel, but I just make a meal out of SKORDALIA. You can get it entree sized. I usually get both kinds and my husband and I split it. SO AMAZING!

You have to visit this place

We stopped here on our way to the Orient Point ferry. We had the Dolmades, falafel and their garlic sauce. Both the Dolmades and falafel were the best I’ve ever had. Hands down. I wasn’t going to order falafel, because that’s so often the only vegan option, and they had so many other delicious things to choose from. But the owner Maria recommended them. I’m so glad she did!!! You could taste the love in the food, and the owners truly care……It shows. The place was clean and beautiful. I would give them 5 stars if possible, but Happy Cow only allows 4 stars to non vegan establishments. I ordered baklava, because it’s not made with honey, then Maria remembered and told me there was butter in it. I love that she cared more about my vegan lifestyle then the money she could make of the baklava. We had takeout this time, but when we come back we will be sure to plan dinner here. If you are in the area you HAVE to check them out. Can not recommend them enough.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Vegan options clearly marked, Phenomenal customer service

Salads and starters

Hellenic Restaurant has a good selection of vegan or veggie appetizers and a few green “Greek” salads that work for vegetarians. You can order a three or five salad sampler and get pita, hummus, skordalia, beets, split pea dill spread , stuffed grape leaves , fried zucchini or cauliflower. If you eat cheese or other dairy products, more choices include spinach pie, grilled halloumi and other cheese dishes. Skordalia ( purée garlic sauce) was delicious. The menu clearly designates vegetarian or gluten free options.

The wait staff understand vegan orders and can give helpful recommendations. There’s a full drinks menu and an expansive outdoor terrace with heaters.

Pros: Vegan options, Friendly waitstaff , Open for lunch & dinner every day

Cons: A bit pricey

Awesome Greek food and lots of vegan options

I’ve been eating at Hellenic practically my whole life, even before I was vegan, and I’m never disappointed. They used to only mark vegetarian items on their menu, but a few months ago they greatly expanded their vegan options, and I love that they have actual vegan entrees like the falafel sandwich, instead of just salads (which are also vegan!) like so many other restaurants on the North Fork do.

The North Fork is kind of a desert for vegan-options, so I love eating at Hellenic and having more than just one option. I highly recommend the vegan beets skordalia made from local beets and their famous homemade lemonade! P.S. when you go, be sure to say hi to their awesome owner, George Giannaris, who also wrote two books about the place.

Pros: Amazing food, Knowledgeable staff, Locally grown food and locally owned

Cons: A bit of a drive from Southold or Greenport
