WARNING: The Doughnuts are NOT Vegan - Edit
I called Heirloom to make a reservation. Specifically because I have wanted fluffy/yeast vegan doughnuts. They were the only ones in the area I thought had them. Apparently the doughnuts actually have dairy! So those that are fully vegan be forewarned.

Oh no! Were the doughnuts labeled as vegan?

No. But when I had them a couple years ago Im pretty sure I asked and the person serving said they were. I was also relying on happy cow reviews. Some other reviews said they were.

That is a shame. I always ask.
Read moreThanks for the heads up.
I just assume they're usually not vegan. Vegan doughnuts are annoyingly hard to find.
I found an amazing place in Charlotte called Sugar; they have a whole vegan case. Obviously very far for anyone living in the triangle, but definitely worth a visit if you ever find yourself in Charlotte.

Yea... there used to be an option in Raleigh called Annisette or something. They shut down around Covid. And in CLT I used to LOVE Pepperbox. But they closed all locations late last year. the pickins get more and more sparse... I have had Sugar in Ballantyne. They are ok in comparison to the Vegan donuts I've tried so far.

Sorry to hear you didn't like Sugar that much. That's a bit surprising to me. I've had a lot of vegan doughnuts and these were mindblowing IMO. Did you go there a while ago? I went in December. Possible maybe they have improved the recipes since you went? Or perhaps they were a bad/stale batch that day?
Read moreAnyway, I wish I could've tried Annisette and Pepperbox. I was living in NY until recently. So many unfortunate casualties of the pandemic. My favorite vegan restaurant, Green Zenphony, shut down because of that. So did Champ's Diner and Dunwell Doughnuts in Manhattan.
On the bright side, I am seeing a lot of vegan or vegan-friendly places open up now in the triangle. There's a new spot in downtown Raleigh called Marian a few blocks north of Heirloom that looks amazing. It's pretty upscale, from the owner of Element. It just opened this month. A bit pricey, but could be good for a special occasion. I have been trying all kinds of options at Pure Vegan Cafe and Cinnaholic as well. And The Dirty V in Apex closed but only because they're moving to Raleigh later this year, which I'm excited about - hopefully they improve things. Coco Bistro in Chapel Hill has some fantastic brunch; I can't wait to go back there.

Hey Tumbeddrylow,
Read moreI hope you are enjoying the South! I used to be in NY all the time to visit family. I loved the pizza, bagels w/ shmear, and bakery treats before I made the switch to Vegan. I have only been to NY once since then. That time I tried Plant Queen and a bagel place that had tofutti cream cheese. I think I tried one or two more places, but I can't remember right now. Where else would you suggest if I had a day in NY and a day in NJ?
Don't get me wrong Sugar is a good choice when you don't really have other yeast donut options. I LOVED Pepperbox because I enjoyed them even before I was vegan. I didn't even realize they were vegan until I made the switch. They were consistently yummy even 'til closing time. I rarely, if ever had a stale donut. Plus, they had a case full of unique donuts at every location. So I could get a dozen different donuts. AND they had an awe inspiring collection of teas. Lastly, they had just started to do a donut breakfast sandwich. Ridiculously good. If you like vegan donuts enough and you are in ATL I'd also recommend giving Five Daughters Bakery a try in Ponce Market. They will only have 1-2 options like sugar, but they are good as well.
The Triangle is definitely trying! I enjoy what the owners of Element are doing. I am biased towards Element as their greatest creation. I have been to Marian for dinner and I think it could use a little work for the prices, but I will reserve my opinion until I try Lunch and Brunch too. Elements Sunday Brunch is delicious and VIBE! I used to go to Coco Bistro alll the time for Brunch. Then they added a dinner service cutting off Brunch and I haven't really been since. When we are over there I tend to go a little farther to Spotted Dog in Carrboro. I also really enjoyed Bonafide Bakery before they shut down last year... Such a treat. I am now trying to get more into the Durham Vegan scene to shack things up. I have tried Pure Soul, Common Market, Goorsha, and Everything Bagels in Durham Food Hall. I have many more places to go.

Wow! That is impressive haha. Sounds like you really know your way around. I wish I could afford to go out more often.
Read moreThe Spotted Dog is great. A bit far for me, but when I'm out there sometimes I try to go. It used to be a regular trip whenever I visited from NY. Their shredded BBQ "pork" whatever it is, is awesome. Great service and vibe as well, though a bit cramped on weekends. I wish I got to try that Pepperbox and Bonafide. It must be really hard to run a restaurant or bakery considering how many shut down and some after only a few years.
Thanks for the recommendations!
Here are some of my favorite spots in NY:
-Delice & Sarassin: West Village - absolutely unbelievable. Vegan FRENCH cuisine. Very rare to find that. Everything I've gotten is just phenomenal. The place is tiny and the chairs and tables are adorably small. A bit pricey but worth it!
-Peacefood Cafe: several locations. Fantastic American style diner with a big menu and great service. Especially LGBTQ friendly. Big display case with tons of desserts like cookies and pies. Very reasonable prices.
-Anixi: The name means means “spring” in Greek. Absolutely life changing. Very upscale, very expensive, and worth every penny! Dinner for two including 1 cocktail each ran $200 after tips. Everything is flawless. Decor, food, plating, service, bathroom, atmosphere, you name it. The menu is from Greece, Turkey, Georgia, and Lebanon. Boundless creativity, photo-perfect meals, truly inspired. I may never go back because of the price, but now I can say I did and I treasure the memory. The owner, Chef Guy Vaknin, it seems is on a mad rush to open as many vegan restaurants in the city as possible. He started with Beyond Sushi which was on Shark Tank - and is now famous with 2 locations. It's also one of the highest rated vegan restaurants in NYC. Through his City Roots Hospitality group he also opened Willow (American comfort food), Coletta (Italian), Sentir (Mexican), Le Basque (France & Spain), and Anixi (the only one I've been to out of those). All are very highly rated. I feel like Chef Leila Kidd and her husband Carey have taken inspiration from Vaknin because VegSouth Hospitality Group owns Element, The Dirty V, De Plantas food truck, and now Marian.
-Blossom: really nice and somewhat upscale - not as pricey as Anixi, more like Element & Marian. This was one of my fav places in the city before I discovered Anixi. You will NOT be disappointed.

-Candle Cafe: again, really amazing place with prices like Blossom or Element. This place has been around for many years and is an institution now. I once bumped in Tobey Maguire there. This place is fantastic and the desserts are not to be missed. They even have their own cookbook which you can buy in the restaurant or on Amazon.
Read more-Dun-well Doughnuts: a brooklyn institution. 100% vegan. Their doughnuts are fantastic, and so many varieties! Great service, lots of coffees and teas and beverages as well.
-Lily's Pantry: Formerly known as May Wah Vegetarian Market, this isn't actually a restaurant. It's a small vegan grocery store in Chinatown that has some of the best vegan substitutes in the world - all imported from China. They actually supply vegan meat for a ton of restaurants in NYC and the entire eastern seaboard - and you can order wholesale from their website as well. In fact, many vegan drumsticks you've had before (esp with a wooden rod inside) might have been bought from them. Bring a large cooler with ice packs and stock up! Some of my favorites which I've been getting from them for literally 20 years: chicken leg (with the wooden stick "bone", NOT the gross one with the sugarcane "bone"), citrus spare ribs, black pepper beef steak, gong bao chicken.
NJ: sorry I don't know any places in NJ.
Oy, sorry for writing a novel. haha

I really appreciate it! I plan to visit NY and NJ this year, so this list will help tremendously. I also plan to visit Tennessee. So I'll share any cool places I find, unless you've already been and know haha.

One day I want to go to Pennsylvania, purely because a vlogger " Rated V for Vegan" showed some amazing places there. Especially this deli: https://deli.luhvfood.com/

No problem. I'm not sure if you checked your messages. I responded on there, so as not to make this very long review thread go even longer haha.

So yummy. You do need to call in advance or have 10-15 mins to wait since vegan doughnuts are made fresh. But really worth it.
