Serves meat, vegan options available. Cafe and juice bar in the back of True Nature Food market. Offers some vegan and vegetarian options. Desserts made in-house. Confirmed closed, Dec 2018.
Came here with non-vegan dad and we both loved our meal. I got the Tofu Scramble and it was pretty good. The Daiya cheese was not very good, but that’s a personal preference. They have vegan butter which was nice. I’ll come back.
the last time that i ate here i ended up leaving and the manager comped my meal because the service and food were terrible. to be fair, it sounded like they were having a terrible day all around and the manager was in the process of closing the kitchen as we were leaving due to staff no-shows, but our service was also terrible. at one point we had to request refills on water and coffee only to have our server pass our table for the next ten minutes and avoiding eye contact. doubly unacceptable because she was training another server so we should have had stellar service. food was served undercooked and cold. that was the last straw. i feel completely justified in not tipping that day as well as not paying the bill.
they have always been known for slow service but ever since they downsized the restaurant area this should have been resolved.
on the other hand, the shop connected, true nature, is fantastic. the owner, paula, has great values and is very responsive to requests.
Been here a few times for brunch and lunch with friends that are not vegan or vegetarian. Not a huge fan of a few menu items, like the tofu scramble is grainy and crumbly, and the vegan mac was just okay. Every time I go there they're out of the vegan pancakes. I will however commend them on their small market where they have a collection of vegan staples and goodies that are reasonably priced, which I have no problem purchasing to support local business.
Just because there are vegan options doesn't mean a vegan should eat here. There's not a lot to choose from and the food isn't all that great. Ordered the breakfast Reuben and it was a bit bland, not to mention pretty much the only thing on the plate. Not even hash or a fruit cup, just two sad slices of orange and a small sandwich. I'll eat somewhere else, thanks.
When I lived in Rogers Park this was my favorite restaurant. I still go there everytime I visit Chicago, and I love to bring my friends there to show it off. The last time I went, they had added an adorable little market.
Just got back from visiting Sweet Home Chicago. When I visit Chi Town the Heartland is my # 1 place to eat. There are plenty of vegetarian/vegan options and things for my non vege friends too. The owners, Michael James and Katie Hogan are good friends and I bring them interesting menu suggestions, some of which have found their way to the Heartland menu. They strive to live up to their slogan. "Good food for the mind and body." The Heartland is also a great place for music, comedy and spoken word. Over the years (I've been going there since the late 70's) I've met a host of interesting people, many of whom have become friends. The Heartland is more than a restaurant, it's an experience. Check it out.
Apparently Heartland now has a new and improved menu and the items on it look tasty. This is a good thing because last time I was there I didn't like what I got - I think it was some wrap. It also looks like they have a good amount of veg*n options now too. :)
Heartland is also really convenient to get to by car and by train (red line - it's a 1 min walk from the stop).
