Loads of vegan options - Edit
Almost too much choice! Have had multiple tasty meals here. Best to go when it isn’t too busy/they’re properly staffed though!

Great beer and good pizza - Edit
Been here many times for drinks and most recently for a midweek pizza and beer deal. The vegan pepperoni pizza was really good I have to say.

I would have given this place 5 stars if the app would let me. Head of steam had a fantastic range of vegan options, the plant based meats were fantastic.

Large vegan offering - Edit
Me and my partner visited here because there were so many vegan options and we love a kebab! When we arrived the service wasn’t the best and everyone seemed a bit miserable and scatty but we let it go when we found out that they were having problems and there was only one chef in. Even though we didn’t say anything we were compensated for the delay with money off the food which was nice of them. We both had the ultimate vegan kebab which was unexpectedly huge and very delicious. The fries were also nice along with the onion rings. We heard the chef asking the waiter if we’d enjoyed the food then when he knew we had he seemed genuinely pleased which was nice to hear he genuinely cared about what he sent out the kitchen. Also the man who served us was very nice and was doing so well considering the circumstance and pressure he was working under. All in all a lovely, filling meal.

Great food, dog friendly pub - Edit
Walked in today with our cocker spaniel pup. Clouds were rolling in and they were happy for us to have him inside.
Read moreWe ordered the vegan chick’n club and fries, and the doner kebab. Just wow. Piping hot, massive portions and really tasty.
I genuinely couldn’t finish the kebab it was huge. So much better than other Head of Steam pubs I’ve been to. They couldn’t do enough for us, gave our dog some love and made sure he had water too! Lots of choice of vegan food too! Will be back for sure!

Give me some steam - Edit
I've visited the Durham HOS many times before mainly for the excellent selection of world beers but on this occasion only one thing was on my mind.. a salted caramel brownie and my word, it was delectable. This was accompanied by a refreshing old mout cider and customary Americano while some indie rock classics played across the courtyard seating. This is the life.

Had the “duck” burger which was nice but very heavy and greasy. The chips were soaked in grease and very soggy. Although if greasy junk food is your thing then this is for you!

Good atmosphere, plenty of vegan options and a super range of beers - Edit
Went here with some non-vegan friends. Good simple fare (pizzas and burgers) with plenty of vegan options. I had a “No sin pizza” followed by the vegan brownies, both were fab. We will be going back. Recommended.

Real as anything you’ve seen - Edit
A fairly recent and much needed refurb has seen the Durham Head of Steam become a bit less grubby and smarter than it used to be. After noticing the special offers on the screen it would have been crazy to miss out on the two pizzas for £14 weekday 4-7pm deal (normally £10 each). A cunningly named No Sin Duck and a straight forward vegan chicken pizza arrived piping hot absolutely ladened with delicious toppings including lashings of vegan cheese. Two pints of pilsner, also on the 4-7 offer provided a satisfying accompaniment. Many more vegan items are also on the menu, I was genuinely surprised. HOS Durham is popular with students and locals alike where a ridiculously huge selection of draft and bottled beers from local and international breweries are available some at ridiculous prices but I guess that’s just the import /export algorithm. I said give me some steam.

Plenty of Choice - Edit
Loads of options, including some really interesting ideas that I haven’t see elsewhere. I had a mock duck burger which had some inspiring extra ingredient choices that made it absolutely delicious! Good selection of beers and a nice outside balcony which catches the sun nicely. Staff were really friendly

Good - Edit
We ordered burgers and chips with the vegan brownie for dessert. The service was great; the waiters were very friendly and helpful and the food came quickly . The burgers were nice, chips were a bit burnt but overall good. The brownie and ice cream were amazing!! Very small portion (especially for the price) but one of the best vegan brownies I’ve had.

The vegan menu is extensive and very tasty. We both enjoyed the no duck hoisin pizza which is very large and very tasty. The vegan nachos were lovely too I just wish I hadn't been so full to try the desserts.

5stars from me. Lovely staff, extensive vegan food and beer options. - Edit
I wish I could give this 5 stars but the review format only allows a max of 4 as it is not totally vegan/ vegetarian. I had the ‘watt the duck’ vegan burger with marinara fries. To be honest there were so many vegan options I found it really hard to choose. It was scrummy! A vegan Pattie with hoisin sauce, spring onions, cucumber and vegan crispy ‘duck.’The fries were delicious too. I took my dog and the staff could not have made us feel more welcome, he even had a doggie beer. I wish I had room for one of the options from the desert menu ( all fully vegan). Next time...
