Stinky tofu as an art

Not everyone is a fan of stinky tofu, but if you are, don't miss this place. I trekked out there via one of the 30* buses on a weekday to give it a go since a vegan friend based in Taipei highly recommended it. It's open in the afternoon when most veg*n restaurants are taking a break, which was a boon for me since I arrived around 3pm. Only one other customer came by while I was there, and he ordered take-out.

To make the trip worthwhile, I tried both the signature numbing spice stinky tofu soup (招牌麻辣臭豆腐, a small order with three pieces) and the fried stinky tofu (炸臭豆腐). Both were excellent in their own ways, but I couldn't stop thinking how wonderfully the fried version was executed, like it were a work of art. The tofu was cut into thick triangles, and they were fried exactly to the right crispiness on the outside while maintaining tenderness on the inside. The sweet, pickled cabbage and the sesame paste paired well with them. While there, I also ordered the Kinmen vermicelli (金門麵線) and an extra order of the cabbage (i.e., Taiwanese kimchi, 相思的滋味/泡菜).

For condiments, you can try their sesame ginger paste and super-spicy chili paste from the self-service area along with some hot tea. They also have soy sauce and black vinegar if those are to your liking. If you enjoy what you taste at the restaurant, you can also purchase packaged versions of their offerings to take home and reheat without having to go all the way out to Shalu.

As I hinted at with the Kinmen vermicelli, there are other items on the menu that aren't stinky tofu that are quite delicious. Give them a try if stinky tofu is not your thing. I'd also recommend pairing this meal with some sightseeing at places nearby, like the Taichung Seaport Art Center and Gaomei Wetlands.

Pros: amazing stinky tofu, excellent ingredients, open in the afternoons

Cons: takes a while to get to from Taichung City
