翰德林素食坊, at 大六部口街11号, is a Buddhist veggie restaurant with plenty of specialties. Location is nearby to Xidan shopping area and bookstore. Free Wi-Fi. Reported closed, Oct 2018.
Room is small, simple, nothing special that would make you enter if you were not specifically looking for this place. But food is really good. Not cheap but delicious and rather generous portions. Had some chicken gongbao, some eggplant + mushroom in pot, some foggy radish (some smog was coming out of it), and a soup of spinach noodle. All for 136 rmb. They also offered me a 粽子 as it was 端午节. That was a real treat; I was full to the point that had difficult to ride my bicycle on the way back.
If you are visiting the forbidden city as a tourist this place is really convenient because of the location. I would even suggest it because of the proximity. But be warned it's really expensive.
Because of the price/value I would give this place 3.5 stars.
But some dishes have oyster sauce, and because of that I'm only giving 2 stars, it's my worst review ever. I got really upset about that, when you go to a vegetarian restaurant you expect no oyster sauce.
In my opinion only go here if you are in a hurry and visiting Beijing.
I was impressed with HanDelin. It's a small, fastidiously clean, well-maintained place, with attentive staff (who seem to be part of a particular Buddhist organisation dedicated to self-improvement). We can recommend the barbecued mock-lamb skewers, the green noodles, grilled long beans, and potato (?) pancake. But there's lots more good stuff to choose from – some very fancy starters but a lot of heartier stuff too. Prices are quite variable, with some very expensive dishes and others at a moderate price. This seems to be the case with some vegan restaurants in Beijing, with prices depending on quality of ingredients.
