Filling veggie burger and friendly service

On an island where the only vegetarian options are cheese empanadas and pizza, I was thrilled to see a veggie burger on the menu! The patty appeared to be homemade—and (possibly) vegan—and it was quite tasty and filling. It had green beans as one of the toppings, which was unusual but I was happy to have any vegetables that it came with since I was feeling quite veggie-deprived ever since arriving on the island. We also had the lemonade, which was freshly made and delicious. Other vegetarian items on the menu included a variety of fresh-squeezed juices and smoothies, a vegetable empanada, veggie-covered french fries, and a vegetable salad. I know that doesn’t sound like a lot of options but, for Easter Island, this was the largest variety of any restaurant—and I checked just about every menu in town. The menu at Hai Tonga was translated into English and our server spoke good English as well. If we stayed one day longer, we probably would have revisited this restaurant. Note that, unlike quite a few restaurants on Easter Island, this place does take credit cards. This was a relief since the local ATM did not like my debit card for some reason. Be sure to get all your Chilean Pesos in Santiago or before you get on the island. And, contrary to what I read on many travel sites, many places do NOT take U.S. Dollars. Cash is king—just make sure it is in pesos.
