Closing October 2017 - Edit
Unfortunately they will close end of October. :( They did a great job and were quite popular but the landlord raised the rent. I wish Tobias and Marion all the best!

Vegan wine restaurant! - Edit
I love this place – for being unpretentious, for bringing back “traditional German” atmosphere into my vegan life.
“Gutenberger” is an all-vegan wine restaurant. The old part of Mainz is full of wine restaurants, this means rather rustic places where the focus lies on enjoying the wine with your friends, accompanied by local food. In a normal wine restaurant there aren’t any vegan options. When you’re lucky you can eat a pretzel and some salad…
At Gutenberger all wines are vegan, and they have all sorts of vegan “Tapas”, some of them vegan versions of the food you usually get at normal wine restaurants (like ground pork or cream cheese) but also raw vegetable dishes. Then they always have salads, and a starter, two mains and one desert that change every week.
I only give 4 HappyCows because not everything I ate there was to my taste. Sometimes the waiting times are long, as everything is cooked fresh. Prices are rather high.
But I’m going to go there again (and again and again) and recommend this place. Especially in summer, when you can sit outside in a quiet corner of the old town with its cobblestone alleys, in front of one of the most beautiful churches of Mainz!
Pros: great concept, lovely food, friendly staff

Best vegan restaurant in Mainz - Edit
Gutenberger Weinlokal is an awesome place. They are fully vegan, including their impressive wine selection which has a lot of vegan wines from local wineries. But not just their wines, also their foods are delicious. They offer some tapas and a weekly changing menu which has always a starter, a couple of mains and a dessert on it. The food is not just delicious but also very inventive.
In a very positive way, this place does not feel like a vegan place at all: Many people visit Gutenberger just for their wines and because it so nicely situated in a small alley in Mainz Altstadt, many of them probably hear about veganism here for the first time. In fact, many non-vegans recommended this place to me already, saying how impressed they were with the food quality 'even though it was vegan'.
Their prices are reasonable for the high quality (about 5 EUR for a glass of wine and 13 EUR for a filling main course) but can be quite high for students. There are a lot of cheaper vegan places in Mainz already so it is great to also have a gourmet place now as well.
Pros: Extraordinary great food, fully vegan, great and local wine selection

Old Town Wine Location - with a twist - Edit
This is not your typical vegan restaurant.
Gutenberger looks and feels (and tastes) like any other Old Town Wine Bar.
... Oh, but it's vegan!
I love the concept of offering vegan versions of typical local food, not a standard vegan repertoire.
This attracts a wide range of customers, quite some you wouldn't expect in a vegan restaurant.
Even omnivores leave this place full and happy.
Must try their delicious vegan "Zwiebelmett" - originally it's ground meat with onions.
But also their "Spundecreme" is barely distinguishable from the dairy original.
Wines are as expected in a venue like this.
The other dishes in the tables around ours looked good as well.

super innovative - Edit
Highly recommended. This strictly vegan wine-bar is one of the most innovative vegan restaurants I've been to lately. It is a bit pricey, however, if you want to experience the typical Rheingau/Rheinhessen wine culture, this is the place to do, vegan-style.
They only serve strictly vegan wine.
There is nice outdoor seating, too. Make sure to check it out while in Mainz.
Pros: strictly vegan, vegan wine, outdoor seating
Cons: pricey

Good food, nice atmoshpere - Edit
I ate here on a nice Spring evening and the outdoor seating is great. It is in the heart of the old town and a really nice outdoor area. The inside also has its own charm but is small so reservations are recommended. The food and service were excellent however, it is a bit on the pricey side for the size of the portions which is why I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5. The wine selection is great. The menu was only in German. I can read German so I did not ask if there was an English menu.
