Very accommodating - Edit
If it was just my husband and I, The Gumbo Shop would not have made my list. But they were super awesome accommodating four omnivores, two vegans, one teenager deathly allergic to shellfish, and a picky vegetarian 7 year old. They have a menu with the vegetarian and vegan options spelled out for you. Although the salad was kinda boring, the black beans and rice were tasty.

Great Vegan Beans & Rice - Edit
The advertised vegan dish that day was white beans and rice. It was very good! I also had a side salad with pecan vinaigrette dressing. The vinaigrette was super tasty.

Very solid vegan option - Edit
My friends and I went to this place since we were looking for food and were nearby. I was pretty excited since the google reviews mentioned that there were vegan options. I got the vegan special which was rice and beans, and I also didn't realize that there were other options.
Read moreThe server was really nice about letting me know whether the Bloody Mary was vegan or not (it wasn't). The food and drink (Rum Runner) that I got were both very good. It's possible that I was just hungry, but I'd like to believe that the food was good.
Pros: Super friendly staff, Staff is willing to double check ingredients

Among the best of limited options - Edit
There aren’t a ton of options in the French quarter, so this is a decent choice if you aren’t able/willing to travel. My food was fine, plus we had great service and the omnis I was with enjoyed their carcasses.

Pretty good - Edit
Asked for vegan menu. A few items on it. Ordered the white bean and rice, salad with pecan dressing off the vegan menu. The waiter asked what dressing I wanted, like blue cheese or other non vegan dressing. I said no I want the pecan dressing. It’s like WTF, I have a vegan menu in hand pointing at the vegan salad. No I want the pecan dressing. Ok, enough rant. The food was really good and the pecan dressing was GREAT.

Delicious - Edit
Rice and beans, gumbo. Spice. All very NOLA while being vegetarian. The service was outstanding and it’s a lovely restaurant in the quarter. #Veganuary

Good when with mixed company - Edit
The vegan rice and beans special was okay. I'm grateful to have it but I was primarily there for my carnist friends. I wouldn't recommend this place strictly on the quality of the vegan food.

Good Gumbo - Edit
The food was good but the waiter laughed in my face when I asked if the bread was vegan... They then brought over a vegan menu but it felt a little mean..

A bit lacklustre - Edit
They have a vegan gumbo appetiser, and their vegetarian dish of the day was also vegan (rice and beans). I got both, and while it wasn't horrible it was really nothing to write home about. The gumbo was quite flavourless (though they do provide vegan hot sauces at the table!), and the main was similarly bland. It's a decent enough spot if you are struggling to find a spot and need food immediately (service is super fast), but otherwise you can find much nicer places in the area

Rare creole options for vegan - Edit
I’ve found it very difficult to find traditional creole options at any old creole restaurants. So I’m beyond excited that the Gumbo Shop always offers the gumbo herbes vegan gumbo and a vegetarian special that is usually vegan. When I went they had vegan beans and rice! The daquiris are also delicious and they have very funny flavors!!

Pretty good - Edit
The vegetarian special was a white bean and rice dish. It was pretty good and filling. The vegan gumbo appetizer wasn’t anything special, and was just okay. But the free bread was good, and my cocktail was good. Plus we didn’t have a wait on a Monday night.

Served Luke warm food - Edit
We ordered the Gumbo Z’ herbs and the vegan black beans and rice. Both dishes were delivered Luke warm. The kitchen dishes up cold meals from the refrigerator and the waiter was supposed to microwave them. After the third unsuccessful try, the waiter knocked both dishes off the bill. I felt weird I don’t like drama, but I could not eat a bowl of barely warm leafy soupy greens. I was disappointed because I wanted to see how a traditional New Orleans meal could be veganized. Also, knowing that the food was reheated instead of being cooked for me kind of spoiled the fun. From a food safety perspective I wanted my food to have been heated to at least 160 degrees. Is this restaurant a tourist trap?

Cons: Food was precooked and not sufficiently reheated, Food not cooked to order

That’s terrible that your food was not served hot. Gumbo can’t be cooked to order. It’s a labor intensive dish that is made in bulk & then served throughout the day. I cook these types of dishes often but I always reheat the leftovers on the stove (don’t own a microwave) & make fresh rice. I live in New Orleans by the way 😊 I remember gumbo shop being very good but honestly haven’t been in years. I will have to try it again soon.

If you’re craving greens - Edit
We were in New Orleans for four days and ate here for lunch on the last day. I wish we had come sooner because I would have eaten the Gumbo Z’herbes (which is vegan) multiple times. There was also a white bean vegan dish of the day. The Gumbo Z’herbes was a deliciously spiced bowl of greens and red beans served with rice. I miss my daily greens when I go on vacation and this was exactly what I needed. Very reasonably priced too.

Tasty but small portions - Edit
Good knowledge about vegan dishes - vegan special advertised on board. My server was able to advise me about vegan sides too but the one I wanted wasn’t so I just had the special - black beans and rice. The portion was very small considering it is just beans and rice (ie cheap ingredients). I’m not sure it’s the best value for money. We didn’t get some of the items we asked for either, I think they are just very busy at the moment.

Fantastic vegan gumbo - Edit
Loved the staff, esp our waiter Will. Pleased to announce they have a vegan and veg menu in addition to their special. I had a bowl of gumbo and ordered a second. Had greens and mushrooms and was warming to the soul so I had to get a second. The honeydew daiquiri was lovely. My daughter got a virgin and the white beans and rice special with corn salsa and the cup size was just right.

Very tasty! - Edit
We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of our meal and service here. It was very busy when we arrived, and the seating is very tight. We really appreciated that our waiter took the time to get us a separate vegan menu. We both started with the gumbo z’herbes, and it was great, super flavorful. I had the white beans and rice for my entree, which was delicious with just the right amount of heat. My husband had the veggie po boy and enjoyed that as well. Portions were great and it was inexpensive.
