Good-ish food, cute vibe - Edit
Overall I thought my food was okay, my friend devoured her food. I had the ceviche but it was mostly just onions and therefore had a strong(er) than usual vinegary taste to it (also lacked the typical lime accent and there were no avocadoes in it which came as a surprise). Also my taco salad had quite a bit of onion and tomato compared to lettuce and seitan "chicken". The mock meat didn't taste realistic but it was still okay. I liked the cashew cream (I replaced that for vegan cheese), however, don't pour too much into your food because the flavor is strong. My vegetarian friend ordered chips and guac (they were out of the seasonal guac and brought it to us without asking if we wanted the regular guac, my friend had them remove it from the bill), and she ordered enchiladas with vegan cheese which she said were amazing. The outside patio is surprisedly boring to dine on compared to the inside which has a chill vibe to it. Also they were out of all three desserts.

Wow! - Edit
Loved this place. We had takeout, but the interior is fabulous and the cocktails look amazing. I had the huge burrito. Highly recommend! I will be back to try more. My omnivore friend also really liked it and swore she couldn’t tell it was vegan.

Not what I expected - Edit
I got the taquitos and my partner got the chimicheese burger. Both were flaky fried flour tortilla- not what I was expecting for taquitos. Everything tasted like smoked paprika- the taquitos, fries, burger. I also got an Arnold Palmer which they did with peach tea instead of black tea- it was fine. The food was kind of one note. Next time I’d just do the nachos and drinks.

Guac Star Rocks! - Edit
We built up an appetite from laughing so hard at comedian Anthony Rodia at Tempe Improv, so we popped in to the Guac Star Kitchen and Cantina that was next door. What a find! All freshly made tasty plant-based options, with reasonable prices, nice portions, and outstanding service by Krysta. The Smothered Burrito Grande that Dad devoured lived up to its moniker of being Big-Ass. Though still a carnivore, Mom was intrigued by several of the options but went with the portabella cheeseburger with Southwest fries. It, too, was awesome. Add in the cool music atmosphere, and Guac Star rocks. It earns one of my Rambling RV Rat 5-cheese awards! Looking forward to a return visit.

Great Addition to the Valley - Edit
We ate here last night for the first time. It has an upbeat vibe. We came for supper but it looks like a great place to come for drinks during happy hour. We had the enchiladas and the grilled guac pocket. Both were excellent. The serving sizes were just right. We finished them and had room for a shared dessert. We had the tres leches cake. It was large, maybe too large. Definitely should be shared. I had the Funky Donkey cocktail. It is a tequila version of a Moscow Mule. It was very good.

The Cantina that happens to be a plant based restaurant - Edit
The thing here is about Margaritas and as I love tequila this plant based cantina must be my fav. They have a really good choice of cocktails that I want to try so I’m definitely coming back for more.
Read moreAbout the food started with the Sinaloa Ceviche, a mix of fresh coconut, cucumber, taro root and avocado but didn’t find any heart of palm as it was specified on the menu, also missing all the spicy and tangy flavor every ceviche must have, so it was good but not what I was expecting.
Next came the Cauliflower al pastor and it was really tasteful and spicy as the adobo it’s supposed to be.
I ordered the Chile en Nogada, a signature on the menu, but it was unavailable at the time, neither the Oaxacan pizza that apparently was a temporary dish, really shame.
Finally the desert was Churro waffle a vegan gluten free extra sweet dream! So I enjoyed my visit.
NOTE: If you want real Mexican food this is not your place.
Pros: Fully plant based , Good place and location , Fair price
Cons: Not all the menu available , Plain flavored food

ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. The nachos are huge and tasty, the white bean dip is garlicky and awesome, and the guac pocket is a little Smokey and flavorful. Highly recommend for vegans and non vegans alike.

Overall tasty mexican cantina style food. Nachos were tasty, but needed a salsa of some sort with it! Their version of a crunchwrap was soooo good.

What an amazing place. The food is sooo good! - Edit
What an amazing place. The food is so good, portions are great. It’s so unique! Jackson was our server, he was awesome the place is all vegan so no need to worry about accidentally getting any cow puss in the queso. It’s one of the best places in the area for vegan food, they have music playing and music videos on the tv’s. It’s a great place, I suggest adding it to the list if you are visiting or in the area.

Not a lot of flavor, totally meh. - Edit
I wanted to like this place, the food was beautiful with good normal non American portions. The flavors, were just meh not a lot going on. I also got the corn elote and I couldn’t even eat it, granted I’m not big on Smokey flavors but it was a real miss for me. I don’t want to give up on this place as I appreciate full vegan restaurants and might, might try it again but doubt it.

Corporate Vegan Miss - Edit
TLDR: IF YOU AREN'T LOOKING FOR FLAVOR, THIS RESTAURANT IS PERFECT FOR YOU.
Read moreGuac Star is a complete miss. This restaurant is literally, in the manager's own words, a corporate attempt to fill a vegan void in a college town. When he came over and asked our opinion, I frankly replied it was bland and a miss. His response was that the flavor was designed to make the customer drink more and that they don't want to add too much spice or flavor because they have to please everyone. In my opinion, its not about the food at all which is unfortunate because I think there is a huge market for delicious vegan food but there was not even an attempt here honestly.
Enchiladas: Flavorless, no spices or fresh veggies anywhere?!? In a vegan place?!?!
Cauliflower side: Soggy, non fresh cauli with a random tomato sauce, bland AF al pastor and didn't add anything.
Elote: tasted like corn from a can that had been sitting out all day... literally did not imitate an Elote dish in any aspect. This is one of the "favorites".
Tacos Dorado: Tastes like Jack in the Box Tacos, zero fresh anything.
House Margs: infused with avocado pit? The manager even admitted this adds zero flavor but it's "just their thing" which explains the entire menu, pointless with a DJ booth.
I literally never write bad reviews but I am so passionate about vegan food and this just gives it a bad name. Do yourself a favor and go to an authentic Mexican restaurant and order a veg entree. Be on the lookout Scottsdale, they're coming your way soon too.
Pros: Fully Plant Based, Cheap Decent Margs
Cons: No Fresh Veggies , No flavor AT ALL, Not Authentic in any way

Wow - Edit
I am so impressed with Guacstar. For starters, all of the staff are warm and welcoming including the general manager. We had the opportunity to meet him and he was incredibly kind and receptive to feedback. The service was quick and our waitress was a gem. The food was also next level. We tried the tres salsa, house margarita, enchiladas and Baja pescado tacos. Everything was fresh and flavorful. My favorite were the enchiladas, the crema sauce mixed with their enchilada sauce was amazing. I also loved the creative mushroom “meat” for the pescado tacos. I was sad when our meal ended because it was one of the best I’ve had in a long time. I can’t wait to visit again and encourage everyone to check them out!
