Disappointing - Edit
Great concept and really nicely decorated but at had a very long wait for food (getting on for an hour) even though it wasn't very busy. The food itself was disappointing - relying heavily on faux meat with hardly any vegetables in sight. This really is vegan junk food which is fine for an occasional treat.

Always good to go somewhere where people can bother there [censored] making food from scratch.
Read moreStopped by for breakfast and don't think I'll manage lunch now. Fry up which was huge and really good value.
Nice diner experience which makes it stand out from the crowd. Looking forward to my next trip and seeing if it's as good and notching it up a star.

Welcomed vegan outfit in Gateshead - Edit
Great to see a vegan fast food restaurant in Gateshead. We were on holiday, so we were happy to wait for the food during busy lunch hour. My daughter loved the Macaroni Cheese.

Wide Awake in America - Edit
After watching episode 8 of Twin Peaks The Return I was a little speechless to say the least. Much the same feeling I had in Gateshead after leaving Grumpy Panda's rather grand Regent Terrace premises. Amongst the estate agents, solicitors and accountants we now have a splendid American themed vegan diner. What would Michael Caine have thought of that whilst filming Get Carter just round the corner back in the 60s. Having first met the Panda crew at the Newcastle vegan festival in June to be told they were opening up a permanent fixture on Independence Day 2017 in Gateshead they had my complete attention. I had absolutely no doubt this place would create a lasting impression. As soon as you walk in the vibes are fantastic. It's relaxed, informal and extremely friendly. They actually want you to be there. They really do. We had the cauliflower buffalo wings, an all day fry-up breakfast and the jalapeño infused Frank'n'-Hurter hot dog. Just as well I can handle the heat. All in all together with a couple of drinks we paid just over £17. This is amazing. Got a light?

Something Special - Edit
The Grumpy Panda is a special and unique vegan establishment. There's nothing like it in the area and I feel very fortunate that it's in a nice location close to my home town, it's a very short distance from Gateshead town centre and accessible for those travelling further by car, train or bus. It's a serious business, it's so professional, efficient and the open kitchen which delivers the delights is a pleasure to observe. I had to pinch myself that I could eat every single mouth watering item on the extensive menu. The staff are super friendly and accommodating. For my first visit I had the fry up breakfast,it was superb. I'm rather desperate to try the mac and cheese next and I could quite easily work my way through the menu in a matter of days. The Grumpy Panda has only been open for a short time but it appears to be very popular already and quite rightly so.

Wonderful vegan version of American diner - Edit
Breakfast all day, with burgers, hot dogs, fries, milkshakes, and all you expect from an American diner. Including kitschy decor from a recent US road trip by the owners. But it's entirely vegan! (With the exception of cow milk available -- and stored separately -- as an alternative to their default of oat milk for their coffee drinks.) The fake "meats" are quite tasty.
Read moreI just are here on their opening day (on the 4th of July, appropriately enough). It was packed. But I was accommodated by the super friendly and happy owners and their family.
I had the "Fry Up" full breakfast. Loved it. And, I feel good, rather than icky (which backends at some other vegan comfort food places).
The coffee with oat milk was also wonderful.
So was the route 66 music (at a low volume).
Highly recommended.
Google maps sent me to the alley behind Grumpy Panda. So, if you find yourself in an alley, go around to the front.
Pros: Vegan comfort food. , Tasty! , Super friendly. Reasonably priced
