The Green Man lives again!

Within easy walking distance of the CBD I was delighted to discover this restaurant at short notice while briefly visiting Melbourne and managed to squeeze in an order before kitchen closing time. I didn’t really get a chance to explore the menu in depth but was really impressed by the roasted cauliflower steak I had. Service was great and the ambience terrific. I’ll definitely be heading back to try out some more of its offerings.

Underwhelmed.

Portobello burger was ok but the bun was not up to the task. A third of the Chips where undercooked, the sauce was very bland & tasted like cold tomato soup. Malabi was lovely consistency, not to my taste, a bit too tart. Overall I'll give it another crack someday.

Cons: Undercooked chips, weird purple maccas bun.

Great but could make life easier for vegans

Tasty and exciting to have a vegetarian pub in Melbourne but it would be good if they label menu items if vegan and note which beers etc. are vegan. Hard to tell as it stands if they have really considered issues re. egg, rennet etc. Annoying to have to ask at a vegetarian place (and waiter didn't seem to know details).

Pros: Lots of tasty options

Cons: Very loud dining area, Some items bland

Lovely Atmosphere

It’s so great to finally have a vegetarian pub in Melbourne! Lovely friendly staff & great atmosphere. However the dishes we ordered we all thought were very pricey & very average. The only thing we liked & would order again was the vegan lentil pate. I really hope they put crunchy hot chips on the menu, get a better burger bun & a solid patty & stop charging $26 for a bland undercooked ‘tuna’ salad. Lovely people! I hope the menu improves & I will definitely be back for wine & pate.

Pros: Nice staff, Vegan house wine, Nice atmosphere.

Cons: Food was very average, A pub with no hot chips only fried potato chunks, Food was too expensive

Could be better

We went to Green Man's Arms for dinner and let's just say it could be better. There were about 4 entrees and 4 mains on the menu as well as small selection of pub food. Many items had cheese which was not vegetarian (animal rennet used) although they could make vegan options.
The falafel plate was rather small for the money $22 for 5 falafel balls, three small (50ml?) bowls of dips and a home made bread. Unfortunately the falafel seemed to be undercooked - crispy outside but gooey in the middle.
The vegie burger ($17) was bland and really lacking in vegetables - the main component being a large bun. The gnocchi (vegan option - $22) was also nothing special. No side salads or vegetables to be seen.
The waiter confirmed that the coffee was variable depending upon the barista - at least for us it was good.
The decor is welcoming and you feel like you are in a real pub (minus the beer stains on the carpet). It would be a great place to have a few beers or wine with friends but the food service needs improvement.

Pros: Good selection of wines and beer, Welcoming atmosphere

Cons: Expensive butnot good value for money, Limited menu choices especially for vegans, Uses animal rennet cheese

Great vegan dinner

We ordered all the vegan entrees on the menu and shared them. They were all delicious. We had the gazpacho, hummus plate, tabbouleh, pommes frites, felafel and Yemeni lahuh bread with falafel and with green beans and mushrooms. There's only one vegan main course (couscous with roasted vegetables) and one vegan dessert (halva icecream). I'll have to try them next time but we had eaten a lot with all the entrees! It would be great if there were more vegan mains and desserts. Maybe there will be next time I visit, given it's only been open for a couple of months so far!
The staff were friendly and the pub had a good atmosphere, it wasn't too loud so we could easily have a conversation (though we had dinner early at 6, it may be noisier later).
The kitchen only opens at 6 pm but you can get drinks before that. We had tried to book online but since the bistro was all booked out, it looked like we wouldn't get a table. We thought we'd try anyway and when we turned up at 5:30 there were several tables available in the bar area (that can't be reserved). But it gets busier later, when we left the only free table in the bar area was the one we were vacating and it was pounced on straight away!
