Superb

This quite simply was one of the great gourmet meals. We had the Caesar salad which had surprise after surprise and a fabulous light cheese sauce. The pasta was beautiful and delicate and happened to be on special that night. And the prize must go to the calamari which was simply the best mushroom calamari I’ve ever tasted. we only had one dessert which was the lemon tart and that was as amazing as the rest of the meal. The Service was so good that it was not at all a pub type experience but rather a Gourmet Vegan restaurant experience.

Pros: Beautiful tasting food, Great service, Loads of choice

Cons: Absolutely none

Excellent!

Been here several times and it seems to be getting better and better.

Love the mushroom calamari and roast potatoes.

If you do go here, I highly recommend the mushroom steak with butter sauce. It's pricey but worth it!

Into my arms

We came here on a Monday to celebrate a birthday, it being a Monday our choice of restaurants was limited and in the end I'm glad because the food and atmosphere here were delightful. They were still doing the Sunday roast for some reason, which was one of those universe aligning moments because we both ordered it and it absolutely hit the spot on a cold Melbourne I-can't-belive-it's-not-winter night. The nut roast was flavoursome and had good structural integrity, was neither too dry/crumbly or too gluey, and all the trimmings were fab. The Yorkshire pudding was super tasty, although not much like the ones I remember from pre-vegan days. The Hasselback potato could have been crispier on top, but was still good. I was a fan of the mint jelly, it had a nostalgic vibe while being kind of updated and different, I thought the flavour and texture were a little more delicate than the one my dad used to shovel out of the jar. Other than that it came with peas, carrots, pumpkin and gravy, all good but I would have enjoyed more gravy, not because it needed it but because I will literally eat gravy like soup if it's decent.

They've also got a good range of mocktails, which is always much appreciated as someone who doesn't drink alcohol. I got a mint julep kind of situation with some candied ginger in it, fresh and tasty and not too sweet.

The vibe here is nice, it's cosy and welcoming, a little quirky and a little fancy but mostly just relaxed and warm. The staff are friendly and attentive and not at all intrusive. It's the perfect location for a pre-movie dinner, we headed across to Cinema Nova afterwards so we didn't sample the desserts here because we were saving space for the vegan choc top. Will definitely be back to try more of their menu - what I peeked at on other tables looked so good!

Yeah just a vanilla one, I think they're made in house! It's pretty good, not mind-blowing but exactly the kind of trashy treat I want at the cinema!

100% vegan now!

I was going to see a film on a Friday night so I booked a table before the film started. It was quite busy. I ordered the bolognese which was filling and tasty. The dessert I chose was the mandarine sorbet and I particularly loved the chocolate mousse flavour. Service was prompt even though all the tables were full. I’d like to go back and try some other dishes

Excellent food and vibe

Such a cool pub. Plenty of spaces for taking a seat or having a drink.

We were there on Parma night, Tuesday. The eggplant parma is not my usual choice, if I am honest, but I saw them coming and out and they looked and smelt great. So I ordered the special, with a glass of wine for $25. The salad was gorgeous, the parma thick and crunchy on the outside. Tasty and filling, it was much better than I had anticipated; 10/10.

The place was pumping with (what seemed like) happy people. Everyone was friendly, the staff also only too happy to chat, but not intrusive.

Cons: Parking nearby is mostly 1 hour.

Brilliant vegan pub food!

I had dinner here last Friday with my girlfriend. The staff were so lovely and attentive, atmosphere was cozy and beautifully decorated and the food was fantastic (and not too dear)! We shared two entrees (pommes frites and cauliflower) and a main (farfalle with parsnip puree) and it was all delicious! The cider and the peach cocktail were fantastic too.

After some confusion over the vegan status of the drinks menu I emailed and got the following response:

"We are currently in the process of moving our entire drinks menu to vegan too.

At the moment there are just a couple of wines by the bottle that we can’t 100% guarantee are vegan as they were made overseas where it isn’t a legal obligation to state if any animal products were used. So we are going to stop stocking them (just gotta get through what we have for now)

All our beers, cocktails, non alcoholic drinks and all wines we serve by the glass are vegan.

We offer soy or oat milk with coffee/tea 😊"

Highly recommend! And book too, it gets busy.

Pros: All vegan food menu, 99% of drinks vegan too - so easy!, Great pub atmosphere and experience

Great pub food

So excited to find a pub with all vegan food! I had the Tofu Larb which was full of gorgeous flavour, best I’ve had. Others had the eggplant schnitzel and raved about it. Also had the fried potatoes (so good!) and a rich and yum sticky date pudding for dessert.

Response from Green Mans Arms today: "When we made the announcement of our kitchen going completely vegan we still had some non vegan drink stock to get through. However now our bar is also completely vegan so we can happily call our venue 100% plant based!"

I queried them regarding dairy, honey etc too, but did not receive a direct answer. No idea if they serve hot drinks etc though?

Superb vegan pub

Now fully vegan as of March 1 2024!

We visited for the first time just after they had transitioned to be fully vegan, but you wouldn’t know that this was a new menu/time of change in the kitchen just judging by the food - it was as if they’ve been perfecting the recipes for years they were that good!

Of course visiting on a Sunday we tried the Sunday roast special, and while I’m not into mint jelly the rest was divine 🥔🌱 the nut roast wasn’t bland like some can be, it had a great texture - crisp on the outside and soft and crumbly inside - and the gravy and sides were great! The mushroom rib eye was crazy, beautifully presented and really delicious. None of this was surprising though as once we tried our perfect starter, the oyster mushroom calamari, 🦑🩵 we already knew we were in for an incredible time.

The staff are lovely and the pub itself is very cute, vintage australiana plates, ashtrays and tea towels decorating the walls, and the dining area is sunlit and peaceful. 🌞A really really great time!

Must tries: Rose cooler, Mushroom calamari, the Sunday roast - especially the Yorkshire pudding

Now totally green, man

I was so delighted to see that GMA were making their food menu fully vegan, although I see they insist on using the term ‘plant-based’ 🙄. We came here for a pre-movie dinner, as is the thing, and ordered a selection of dishes. To be honest I thought there’d be more new items, but I only saw one ore two, if that. We chose the tofu larb and Caesar salad for mains. I’d had the salad before, and it was as tasty as ever, with its superior shaved parmesan, but this time with tempehcon (or however you spell it) instead of a proprietary fakin. The larb was alright, tasty enough and quite spicy, but fairly no-frills — including a plain inverted bowl of white rice on the plate - and not huge. We had a couple of starters served at the same time. I’d been excited to try the calamari, but it wasn’t amazing: tasty enough, with a nice dipping sauce, but not particularly crispy. The chorizo focaccia board was not quite what I expected. It was substantial enough, but there was only a small amount of chorizo, which I remembered as an ingredient of some other dishes at this restaurant. The proportions of each component of the platter - pickles, hummus, focaccia - didn’t quite match, but to be fair, that never seems to happen. I had a couple of cocktails to wash it all down, and I think there’s a few new ones on the list. We came back after the movie for a jug of beer, and there was a relaxed, social vibe with a DJ playing. Now that the menu is vegan, it will be my pub of choice.

From 2022:
Still the choice of local moviegoers ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I had left a bit of time since my last visit to GMA. I still think it’s the perfect pre-/post-movie restaurant in the neighbourhood, but its smallish menu means it’s best not to go too often. Sure enough there were at least three new dishes this time and we ordered two of them. I was interested to see what their pho would be like and it was very nice, with a tasty broth and a decent amount of fairly appetising mock meat and vegetable ingredients. The smoked tofu was satisfyingly substantial and full of flavour. I see some of the old favorites - the eggplant schnitzel and the burger - are still on the menu, and they’re good, but it was nice to see a few introductions. The pub’s vibe was friendly and the staff were pleasant and helpful, making it a nice casual dining experience.

re: other dimension: Not sure that it really matters, as long as the venue is genuinely vegan, which it appears to be. I would rather support vegans running vegan businesses, but it is rare that we would ever have 100% surety of them being vegan, even if they said that they were. There are a lot of people claiming to be vegan online, that are clearly plant based... at best. If in the area, I would much rather support a business that is vegan, than a non-vegan business, regardless of ownership.

Average at best.. with a couple of exceptions

So most of the food is on the lower side of average.. there is no love. It's like the chefs don't care and don't taste the food.

I've been 4 times.. and it hasn't gotten better over time.

The only things I can recommend is the Sunday roast. ..And the king oyster "calamari".

Pros: Sunday Roast, King Oyster Calamari, Beer

Cons: All the other food is average at best.

Gorgeous Ambience fat laden food

Plant based doesn't mean bereft of healthy, colour filled fried food. The staff and atmosphere were so lovely. However the food was lacking in imagination and simplicity.
It is such a challenge to find healthy plant based food, without a reliance on tofu and tpv ( processed mince ).
I was so excited after seeing insta photos.
I am being conscious of wanting to add value, not detract. So here is our honest opinion.
Deep fried potatoes, sugary bun burger, mash of mince and tofu. A Vegan kitchen is such an opportunity to truly showcase the beauty of plant based eating.
I couldn't understand the reliance on processed food.
Lots of colourful vegetables, legumes, quality vegan fetta and if you want to cook tofu, simply press it and cook lightly with fresh herbs and ginger.
Your atmosphere and staff are so perfect.
Perhaps this review will be discarded but if not, I hope you research what plant based means, "plants" fruits etc
The cost was extreme considering the ingredients..
You know if you were to make the shift to "health expanding" food rather then fried limited options, you would change the life of animals, people and the earth.
I feel so sad that all 3 of us can't have you as a go to.
Please let your staff know they are fantastic

Great staff, great food, expenny as hell

Green mans arms is our local, we come here from time to time when we need vegan food quickly, and when we have some extra cashola to spend. The food is very decent, but at the price point we pay - we could enjoy vegan fine dining in the CBD. If anything makes the price worthwhile it is most definitely the staff. Warm, welcoming and attentive. Even though the price of their cocktails and food are extremely high, we’re always going to dine and drink here due to the proximity and the wonderful people that work behind the bar.

Pros: Staff, Great vegan range

Cons: Price point , Not fully vegan

Scrumptious!

Food was fabulous! We had the massaman curry which was divine; a Green Man's Charcuterie to share which was huge and included a wide variety of different nibblies (the cashew feta was my fave); and for dessert chocolate date sticky pudding, which was heavenly. The service was A++ and super fast even though the place was packed. We'll definitely be back. Next time we'll try the sticky date cocktail which apparently tastes like the dessert I had.

Very good but on the expensive side

I like that the menu changes seasonally, and there's always something I want to try.
My favourites over the years have been the king oyster calamari, the ancient grains salad, and the basque cheesecake with a very good burnt caramel sauce.
Some of the menu items are soooo overpriced.

Pros: bit overpriced

tasty tofu two ways

I've been here before and wasn't that impressed but tried again last night after a Comedy Festival show and enjoyed it a lot more. It was after 8.30 and most places we passed were closing up so were relieved to find the Green Man's kitchen open until 10pm.

Couldn't go past the tofu larp, which my dining companion had tried before and recommended. We ended up sharing the smoked tofu as well, which I thought might be tofu overload but it wasn't! The 2 dishes were so distinct in their treatment of tofu. The smoked was, as you would expect, soft and tender, served with rice, a pretty basic salad with tomatoes and pea sprouts, and a tasty dressing. In contrast, the tofu in the larp was crumbled and chewy, with some crispy caramelised edges. It looked and tasted almost like Impossible ground "beef" but they did it with tofu, perhaps baked? Served in lettuce cups with salad and pickles on the side and a pungent vegan fish sauce dressing.

The staff were young, friendly with just the right level of attentiveness. The dining room was still quite full later on a Saturday evening, which was good to see. Our meals were on the lighter side for mains and priced at $20 and $22. Some of the more substantial mains were around $26, which is still very reasonable for the location, cosy atmosphere, and level of service. Drinks were a bit pricier. I ordered a mocktail, the pineapple punch, which was delicious and spicy but $12 seemed a bit expensive. It's great to see a decent variety of non-alcoholic drinks on their menu though.

Pros: kitchen open until 10pm, little bit classy but not too expensive , non-alcoholic drinks

Very nice food and atmosphere

I was pleasantly surprised by the food - looking at the menu I thought it might just be one of those places serving expesnive pretentious vegetables, but it all actually quite tasty. Only giving 4 stars because it's not all vegan.
