What an experience - Edit
There are not many walk-in vegetarian restaurant options on Lamma so after knowing Bookworm Cafe has become a meat cafe and Rawsoever only does private dining with booking, I came by this one. The menu has lots of items with eggs but I finally found something to order. Staff were friendly and repeatedly asked me if there's anything I don't eat as they can adjust the cooking. That was cool.
Read moreThings started to change. I asked about changing the tea with dairy milk to soy milk, the staff said yes but add $5 extra. When I thought I ordered a curry dish with veggie ham and pineapple on rice, a fried rice came...without any curry flavor (the Chinese menu says curry rice not fried rice with curry sauce or anything like that. Partly my bad not to double check as it says stir fried as well). During the order, I mentioned I could not eat salad or raw veggies today. The rice was covered with raw parsley, which I happened to hate as well.
When I went to pay, the staff said the restaurant only accepts cash. I said how about Payme. They said no and asked me to go get some money or make sure I carry some money when I come to Lamma again. It's rare for restaurants not to accept any other form of payment except cash. I wish they told me when I walked in to avoid all these unnecessary conversations. There was no sign on the front that said "cash only". One of the staff said next time you'd better ask if the shop or restaurant accepts other forms of payment before I order. I said how about you let the customers know when they walk in next time?
I'm glad the younger female staff helped by asking someone else to send a Payme code over so I could settle it.

Nice and cosy atmosphere. Friendly stuff. Good food without mock meat. A bit pricey.

A cute little place to eat - Edit
The restaurant itself is so cute with a homely atmosphere. The staff were super helpful, happy to veganise menu items. The food was nice, servings were generous and everything tasted fresh.

awesome, friendly place - Edit
I had an amazing burger, a cheese cake and an iced coffee. Everything was such a high standard and tasted amazing. It was a hot day and it was nice that inside is air conditioned. There are also nice sheltered tables out the back with an ocean view. Would come back for sure!

Green Cottage doesn't offer vegan dishes "by default" but they can make almost everything vegan by request. Unlike many other places in Hong Kong the staff at Green Cottage is aware about what veganism is about. I was treated very courteous and advised in all detail with great endurance and friendliness. The food - a daily special - was very good. Good smoothies as well. Appropriate pricing. WiFi available.

Green Cottage, Lamma Island, Hong Kong - Edit
I spun along here for some dinner this afternoon. This was a very positive experience. I can see why this place is popular.
Read more1stly it was hot and humid. I was offered outdoor seating but due to the humidity I asked if there was an area with air con available. No issue and I was escorted to the area at the very back of the restaurant.
I was served by a very helpful gent who fortunately for me and my poor standard of Cantonese spoke good English. The menu is also in English with supporting pics for those who like that kind of thing.
There's plenty on the menu to choose from. There's an extensive section on juices and the like as well as other drinks. There's a breakfasts section, pizzas, mains and there's also a specials board that was offer a deal of the day. For 108 hkd it's a choice on the special menu of either soup or salad followed by a main and either a normal tea or coffee (more extravagant teas and coffees incur extra charge).
The menu appeared big on dairy and egg for a humble vegan such as me so I asked for a recommendation. The waiter stepped through the menu with pointing out many dishes that could be made vegan basically by either removing the cheese or the eggs.
I went for the deal of the day and had mushroom soup 1st. very nice. My co diner went for the beetroot salad for which the feedback I am given is it was OK but could have benefited with some extra beetroot. The main was vego bolognese with linguine - very nice also. My co diner asked for a soya latte for a drink and was a little disappointed that there was an additionao charge for soya milk rather than dairy milk.
10% services are added.
As mentioned very enjoyable. Tasty food, helpful and capable service in what is an eatery with a pleasant vibe. If I were to make a couple of suggestions for improvement the additional price for soya milk compared to dairy milk would be better removed.

First stop on Lamma Island - to refuel - Edit
Take the ferry from Central to Yung Shue Wan, Lamma Island - as you walk into the village you pass a few gross places - then on your left you will see Green Cottage - with "Fair Taste" coffee's & other Fair Trade products. A place to check your emails gratis whilst you enjoy a drink & a snack before climbing up into the hills. Green Cottage is a blend of mini-cafe & Fair Trade / organic produce shop. Good vibes. Owner is Ron Yiu. His website should be up again soon after a "hack attack" destroyed the content - www.greencottage.net
