Serves meat, vegan options available. Except for fish, the extensive menu is vegetarian. Sit at the counter or at tables. Breakfast, salads, sandwiches, pizzas, and more. Very busy at lunchtime. Minimum eat-in is $7. Removed due to poor vegan options. Open daily.

Major Disappointment! - Edit

We were travelling with omnivores, but they were decent enough to make the effort to go to places where there would be something for everyone. Chose this place as it was relatively close to where we were staying and claimed to be vegan-friendly. It is NOT VEGAN FRIENDLY. Arrived at the restaurant, surveyed the menu with a confused expression, and asked the waitress what they had that was suitable for vegans. She said they don't really have anything. I asked her then why they were promoting themselves on HappyCow as being vegan-friendly and she disputed that, stating that they are a kosher restaurant and are not concerned with catering for vegans. Eventually they brought out a pizza for me without the cheese, and I have to say this was the worst pizza I've ever eaten in my life. My boyfriend and I also shared a middle-eastern platter which was also disappointing. The cherry on top was the bill - over-priced food with a hefty service charge. Don't waste your time with this place.

Pros: None in my opinion

Cons: No vegan options, Over-priced

Nasty service/Nice food - Edit

I went to this restaurant throughout my childhood and have many very fond memories there. This is why it was such a shame that my impression of the Great Anerican Health Bar was ruined when I returned there recently. It was a wet and miserable night and my wife and I had walked some distance to get there. On the way my wife began to cramp, when we got there she was noticeably in pain. The waiter said to us that he was sorry but there was no table yet. So we could EITHER eat at the bar OR wait for a table. I said we would wait for a table but noticing many empty seats around the bar I mentioned "okay, my wifes just going to sit down at the bar for a few until the table's ready" at this point the manager screamed at me "NO! theres no sitting at the bar unless you are eating there" in an extremely nasty tone, to which i replied "we just walked 2 @$@%!@ miles to get here, my wife is sitting down". The food we ordered that night was well above average. The fettucine, had great content and a pleasant alfredo sauce. The chili quesadilla was also quite tasty and the rest of my companions seemed more than content with the dishes they ordered. The food here generally exceed expectations, while it is not quite the highest level of gourmet, they always make more out of a dish than you expect with great content and a fine selection of ingredients. My issues are firstly, because of their location, being one of the only kosher vegetarian options in that part of midtown, they are able to take advantage of their clientele pricewise. While I dont think it's grossly overpriced, it could easily be brought down a dollar or two per main dish. Secondly, when you see someone in obvious pain denying them to sit down, when their are seats availabe, is minimum nasty and maximum sick and masochistic. Putting that aside, the service is fairly quick and efficient, the restaurant has a good vibrant upscale kosher diner charm to it, and the food can be excellent. I would recommend this place with reservations and just hope that you have a better experience there than I did.

Pros: Great midtown location, high quality entrees, Free salad/garlic bread w/some entrees

Cons: Nasty manager, Abit overpriced, Very busy (might have to wait for table)

Ok, not great. - Edit

We were returning to our hotel on 10-10-07 and remembered that this title was listed in Happy Cow. We were shown a table and given a large (6 page) menu from which we chose a Portobello mushroom sandwich and veggie burger. The menu showed both had mayo and cheese, which as vegans, we asked to be omitted. Each came with a side salad, cucumber, shredded carrots and iceberg lettuce. The Veggie burger came on pita bread with the alternate choice of a regular burger bun.
The portobello mushroom sandwich was cold. The home made veggie burger was warm. I prefer home made to commercial products like gardenburger, bocaburger and others (except Sunshine burger).

The check was nearly $24 for 2 of us. No charge cards, just cash, so leave your AmEx, Visa, and M/C home

Pros: Friendly Service, home made veggie burger

Cons: cold portobello, No charge cards
