Lovely lunchtime venue

A lovely cosy cafe, fully vegetarian and plenty of vegan options too. I had a panini and a milkshake. My non-vegetarian Mother really enjoyed her food as well so smiles all around.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Warm and inviting

Vegan scones

After searching the streets of Ilfracoombe looking for some vegan options myself and my partner stumbled across Grassroots cafe which offered a calm, relaxing atmosphere and plenty of sweet and a few savoury vegan options.

The vegan scones were delicious and the caramel cake was simply divine. Ilfracoombe isn’t offering much on the vegan front so I would definitely visit this gem.

Pros: Good vegan options , Affordable , Cozy atmosphere

Nice cafe

I like supporting local veggie/vegan cafes but honestly wasn’t too impressed when I went. It seems to be a mostly veggie place with a few vegan options (guess I expected the other way round). I had about 2 choices for lunch as the rest had milk/cheese in. What I had was really tasty though so would probably go back.

Pros: Nice food, Good portions, Nice atmosphere

Cons: Mostly veggie food

Lovely lunch

A great lunch spot! Great selection of sandwiches and savoury tarts, plenty of vegan options. Leek and apricot pastry was delicious, all meals accompanied by salad, option for crisps. Reasonably priced and coffee also very good!

Pros: Lots of vegan options, helpful staff

Delightful Evening Out.

The Grassroots is mostly a daytime eatery but on two evenings a week, Friday and Saturday, they open as a bistro, with a fixed price, set menu. £20, four choices each for starter, main, and dessert, BYO alcohol. It is a simple formula which works extremely well.
The place has a relaxed, homely atmosphere (the sunflower decor grows on you), the food is down- to- earth recipes, delicious tasting, beautifully prepared, and unfussily presented. (no arty-farty presention here, thank goodness). The portions are generous so you need to bring a large appetite with you.
Sadly North Devon is seriously short on vegetarian cuisine so this place is a must if you are in the area.
Pros. Really good food. Unbelievable value. Generous portions. Friendly staff (one chef, one waitress !) Good atmosphere.
Cons. Small place, need to book. Only open two nights a week.

Pros: Really, really good food. generous portions., Unbelievable value. Friendly staff., Good atmosphere.

Cons: Small place, need to book., Only open two nights a week

Welcoming homely cafe

Excellent little cafe with Vegan and Vegetarian options, staff were very friendly and welcoming. Priced very well and great lunch size portions. Would have loved to check out the bistro night with BYOB but unfortunately only discovered this place near the end of our holiday.

Pros: Friendly staff, priced well, byob (selected nights)

Cons: decor might be a bit garish for some

Fabulous Bistro Nights

Friday and Saturday nights are Bistro Nights from 7pm onwards.
The fixed price menu £10.00 per head (at time of writing)is excellent value for money and in our opinion too cheap for the quality and quantity of food you get. The menu offers 4 starters, 4 main courses and 4 deserts on a rotating 3 week menu. For example
Starter - Cherry Toms panfried in balsamic vinegar and honey served with toasted muffins and feta.
Main - Creamy veg bake with cheesy crumble served with steamed veg or salad and chunky chips or garlic bread. Sweet - Coconut cream in a brandy snap basket.
All appear to be homemade and cooked to order.
The premises are not licensed so bring your own alcoholic drinks.
Surroundings are very pleasant and the owner who also served and cooked and washed up! was helpful and attentive.
Booking is a must as the cafe only seats around 20 diners.
During the day the cafe also sells a very interesting range of vegetarian sandwich fillings and quiches.

Pros: excellent choices on fixed menu , price , friendly

Cons: none
