vego restaurant with vegan options ... great food ... reasonable prices - Edit

Govindas has how reopened at 358 George Street, Brisbane after being closed for a few months ... its located near the Dendy theatre ... it has the same great food served by the same friendly staff ... there are vegan options (just mention to staff you are vegan) ... the feast meal is still $12.90 and concessions/students is $10.00 ... Govindas is open from Monday to Saturday from 11.00 am to 8:00 pm and on Sundays from 11.00 am to 3:00 pm ... their telephone number is (07) 3210 0255 ... I eat there at least once a week

Pros: the all-you-can-eat feast meal is great value

Good food - Edit

We went for dinner here last night, the lady that served us was very friendly and helpful. I got the plate with two options to choose and rice it was $8 which I thought was good value. I chose the vegan curry and koftas both were really good, we wanted to try the vegan chocolate cake but we're too full after our meals, I would eat there again for sure.

Pros: Friendly staff, Good food

Delicious vegan food - Edit

This is one of my favourite places to come when I visit Brisbane. It's a little hard to find if it's your first time visiting but you will find it eventually. The atmosphere is so welcoming as are the friendly staff. I always get the plate where they put practically everything on it and always get extra kofta balls because they are my favourite. The serving is huge but I always end up eating it all it's so good!
Recommend this place to everyone!

Pros: Value for money, Heaps of room to sit , Delicious healthy food

Bland food - Edit

The food here suffers from lack of spice -because of the religious basis of the Resturaunt. There is no chilli, no onion and no garlic. This makes the food bland and very unlike Indian vegan food elsewhere. Disappointing for me.

Pros: Handy position, Cheap

Cons: Bland

tasty and good value for money - Edit

Really tasty and good value for money food.
- Dishes (1 - 3) with rice for 6/8/10 AUD (very good)
- Muffins (1 AUD) (quite O.K.)
Also offering "All you can eat" for 12,95 AUD with dishes, rice, dessert and a special drink (something like lime ice-tea).
Ask what is vegan!

quick and cheap - Edit

I have only had the all you can eat deal for $12.90 so far so I can't judge how good the normal portions are but the staff was very nice, the food was good and there were plenty of vegan options available. They even had a vegan dessert. All in all we were very happy with our experience there as the food was delicious and well priced.

Pros: great location, good food, friendly staff

Cons: lack of atmosphere

delicious and healthy vegan food - Edit

I absolutely love this restaurant. I have been coming here for many years and although the price has gone up a little in that time, the food is still just as delicious and filling as ever. Most people will get the buffet, now $12.90, which includes a plate of rice and dahl, vegetable curry (which changes each day), kofta balls with tomato chutney/sauce, fresh garden salad and dressing, and a pappadum. Plus a lemon, mint and ginger cooler which is deliciously refreshing, and halava and custard for dessert.

They have other options such as just buying one curry and rice for $6, and other individual options including lasagne and samosas. Takeaway options are also available.

The halava and custard is not vegan alas but the main is, minus their traditional yoghurt salad dressing. On my last visit I was pleased to discover they had a new vegan dressing! When ordering simply say a 'vegan buffet please' and they will know what to give you =). I hope that they will add a vegan dessert option to their menu.

It is a buffet so you are of course welcome to go back for more or ask for extra while they're filling up your plate but the food is so filling you probably won't need to. I'm usually full about halfway through but the food is so good I have to keep eating. The food has a unique and delicious taste that you will find nowhere else and just smelling it upon entering Govinda's makes my mouth water. It's always fresh and tastes a little different each time depending on the mix of vegetables and spices, and perhaps who is making it that day ;) The cooler may tickle your throat when they're a little generous with the ginger but usually it's perfect. The staff is always friendly. I suggest going early or late if you want to avoid the lunch rush. I find I'm always quite sleepy after eating here so allow some time to simply sit back and pat your satisfied stomach =).

Pros: delicious food, mostly vegan, friendly staff

Cons: vegan dessert please!

Very tasty, very filling, nice atmosphere! - Edit

We went for the Feast, an all you can eat buffet for about $12 and includes a drink and dessert. All the main meal was Vegan, as long as you don't have dressed salad. Not sure if the pudding was. I was too full from the main to get any. Very good value, you could also get a small takeaway pot of rice/dahl/curry for a few Dollars. So a great place to get a hearty meal.
Ask at the Information Centre to point this place out on a map!

Pros: Good prices, All you can eat Buffet, Popular place for locals

Cons: Upstairs, a little hard to find, similar menu every night

Lunchtime stable - Edit

I have been coming to Govindas for many years now and I've never had a meal I didn't enjoy. It is a lunchtime staple for me (when I don't bring my own lunch to work). I love the buffet. You get a good amount of food including a dessert and a drink.

Mix of vegan and vegetarian menu items.

Each day has a different lunch buffet menu. It's always busy at lunchtime.

Pros: Good serving size, buffet, value

Vegan friendly Hare Krshnas - Edit

We love it here and visit as much as possible whenever in Brisbane. I don't consider the religious ownership a con, as there is never any attempt to impose it or even talk about it to you unless you ask. The Hares are so friendly and happy it's a joy to be around them and eat their food - not to mention it is delicious and satisfying and great value for money. The place also has great atmosphere. Get here before 1pm if you prefer not to queue.

Great value - Edit

When you're hungry and stuck in town, Govindas is the perfect place to go - you'll have a big, healthy delicious meal and you won't feel disappointed or ripped off like if you'd had to get something from one of the mall food courts.
Good value for money and yummy!

Pros: large serving, healthy, good value

Cons: noisy

I've only been here a few times, but it is such a lovely place to have a meal! The atmosphere is busy but cheerful and the vibes are just downright wonderful!
I'd recommend this place to anyone who likes nice food :)

Pros: Amazing value, Delicious Food, Friendly, helpful staff

Cons: Crowded (but what can we blame that on?)

Always Great - Edit

I can't count how many times I've eaten here, I must have eaten a thousand of those pakoras. This place was my staple at University.

The food is always good, but beware every now and then they have a none vegan main. I just say vegan when I order and they know not to put the yoghurt sauce on the salad. Also the desserts aren't vegan.

You can go back as many times as you like until you are full. Usually I ask for extra pakoras with the delicious tomato sauce they put on them.

I've eaten at Hare Krishna restaurants in Melbourne and London, but after the pakoras at Govinda's in Brisbane they dissappoint a little.

A gem. Yay for cults.

Pros: Pakora's, All you can eat, Central

Cons: Religious

Always good - Edit

Its right in the city so its a perfect location for lunch. $9 for a buffet plate, with a bottomless cup of lemon mint cooler. The food is standard Krishna fare, as well-made as you'd find anywhere. Plenty of non-vegos eat there simply on account of the fact that you're unlikely to find a filling meal anywhere else for $9. Heartily recommended.

Pros: Good food, great value

Jeffrey 04 Nov 2009 - Hi Mistikiel, I found your review very helpful. It sounds like this Govindas is quite good. I know some other ones in different cities get mixed reviews.
