My first vegetarian/vegan only restaurant in Japan

I'm a vegetarian who just recently moved to Japan, and it's been hard being a vegetarian here, so I've been forced to live a flexitarian-ish lifestyle.

This restaurant was a nice break from that lifestyle though. I live somewhat near it, but it is somewhat of a hassle to get to, as you have to ride the Toei subway lines to get there.

Pros: Good, vegan Indian food, Neat Indian atmosphere admist Japan

Cons: Maybe a bit expensive?, Not the most accessible location

Awful atmosphere, bland food

There was no music and we were the only people there, so it felt really awkward. Our dishes were really bland and it’s the first time I’ve ever been bored while still eating my food.

Good food reasonably priced

One of my favorite Indian restaurants in the area. Food was comforting and yummy, exactly what I was looking for. Will definitely be visiting back again.

Middle class Indian restaurant

We had dinner here after Disneyland, because this was the only option nearby. The price is good. You can have all you can eat lunch buffet for 1500 or dinner for 1800. But I was wasn’t pleased with the hygiene in the restaurant and all the curries which are vegan were so hot, that I couldn’t enjoy. Although the owner said that all their curries are mild…

Pros: All vegetarian, no meat, All you can eat buffet

Cons: Not recommend if you are not good with spicy, Hygiene lacks

Best Indian food

Dive in for the perfect desi experience. So many options to choose from. Samosa chat and Cheese Masala Dosa were really delicious and fulfilling. Quantity was more than enough. Definitely check it out and also visit the temple next to the restaurant.

Pros: Great taste , Affordable , Eggless baked cakes and muffins upon order

Cons: You have to avoid overeating. Lol

Limited vegan options

I'm not sure why this place is listed as vegan friendly. There was one vegan option available. However, it was delicious. A massive serve for a very small price. Classic Indian flavours, and I can imagine that vegetarians would be able to enjoy more of the food. Once I explained that I was vegan, the waiter was quite accomodating. However, when I went on my memorised spiel of "no butter, milk, egg", he sarcastically responded with "this is a vegetarian restaurant so we do not serve egg", which I thought was unwarranted considering eggs are considered vegetarian but not vegan in most socieites. Besides all that, a good meal and a vegetarian friendly spot, but I wouldn't call it vegan friendly.

Pros: Good value, Big portions, Traditional flavours

Cons: Not-so-great vibe, Subpar customer service

Vegetarian’s Paradise

Huge selection of all vegetarian (I think even vegan, I’ll ask next time) curry.

An oasis for vegetarians in a country ruled by meat.

For Krishna Devotees, Not Vegans

If you're a member of ISKCON (often known in the west as Hare Krishnas, for their chant) then this is obviously the place to come, with the temple attached. As a vegan, however, I feel like I'm intruding on the temple, with virtually all other customers coming to eat after visiting the temple, and (as with most ISKCON institutions) little interest in or support for vegans.

On my most recent visit (the weekend buffet) two out of the four main dishes were vegan (but they are never labelled). Moments after asking about which curries contained dairy, the friendly waiter appeared with breads, and after I explained about not eating dairy (again) he confirmed that the nan contained milk, so took it away (leaving the hopefully-vegan dosa). Then a few minutes later he re-appeared with roti instead - a nice thought, but not much better since they were all smeared with butter (or ghee). He gave up after that. It does call into question how vegan the so-called vegan curries are. The curries were typical ISKCON fare - not bad but a little bland and watery, especially the sambar. They had real basmati rice, but only white rice. The salad didn't have any dressing.

I also tried the a la carte menu a few months ago, and had a so-so Masala Dosa. It wasn't bad, but not a touch on the fresh and flavoursome masala dosas and other South Indian food at Vege Herb Saga, where vegan options are labelled on the menu.

If you're wanting a simple, filling buffet dinner in the weekend, and don't mind navigating the ghee and cream, it may be worth the trip out to Funabori, but the (lunch) buffet at Nattaraj is more delicious, healthier, more vegan-friendly and half the price, and less far to travel from most locations in Tokyo.

Pros: weekend dinner buffet

Cons: not vegan-friendly, expensive for what you get (1800 Yen), a long way away from central Tokyo

nice, inexpensive veg Indian food

Govinda's does lunch and dinner buffets on Saturday and Sunday. I believe the dinner one is 1800yen which I think is very reasonable for the variety of food available (includes all-you-can-eat naan, chapati, and dosa on request). Sometimes they are crowded after an event at their associated temple but usually I've gone right in. The regular menu is fairly diverse. The staff is very friendly and all of the food is skillfully prepared by native chefs. I believe this restaurant is open everyday as I've visited on New Year's before. (What a life saver!)

Pros: great buffet, large variety, great-tasting food

Cons: somewhat far from central Tokyo, convenient hours
