Definitely one of the highlights of the trip to Madeira! Probably the best vegan restaurant meal I’ve ever had.

Nice place in a very central area. The staff is kind and helpful. The menu has plenty of vegan and vegetarian dishes. They even have vegan butter for the tradicional bolo do caco.

Really nice - Edit
I had my best meal in Funchal here. They have at least 8 vegetarian/vegan dishes on the menu. I'm not sure if all were vegan but the waiter kindly asked if I was vegan in case I needed help. The desert menu clearly mentions 4 vegan options.
Read moreI had ravioli with spinach cream cheese and tomato sauce. It was beautifully presented, full of flavour, and very fresh. For deseft I had a non-vegan lime mousse that was very light and very tasty.
The staff were all super friendly. I would highly recommend this place.

Amazing vegan food! - Edit
The food here was so so good. However the staff that day wasn’t very much in the mood? We had to wait so long before we finally caught their attention, this wasn’t so nice when you’re very hungry haha. Furthermore the food was so good! So that made everything fine ☺️

5 Stars :) - Edit
Lots of vegan options ☺️ Some food is „make your own“, so you can for example choose the filling of the mushrooms. Vegetarian dishes can be veganized.
Read moreThe composition of the dishes and the styling is something special that you don‘t get everywhere. It was also tasty ;)
I was there multiple times😄and will come back!
once had the seitan steak which was hands down the best seitan I ever had. The couscous side dish was ok, a bit bland while also artifically (?) flavoured.
The Burger is not really a Burger 😂
Portions are large! Prices ok😄
Service was good and helpful. Menu is a bit confussing 😅

Many vegan options! - Edit
They have many vega(n) options on the menu. They even made a vegan bolo do caco😉also, we had vegan stuffed mushrooms which were good, risotto which was nice but I think they put vegan cheese in it (which I don't really like because of the taste), the ravioli which was really good!!! Finally, we chose vegan brownie and something with apple crumble. Both also very good, but very big portions 😅 although the brownie was more like a cake.
Read moreOne point of improvement: one of the waiters came to our table every 3 minutes to ask if everything was still good and bent over the table each time to get the wine bottle and refill our glasses. To be honest, that's not very relaxing while having dinner. #Veganuary
Pros: Many vegan options
Cons: Annoying waiter, Very bad coffee

The best place with Vegan options in Funchal - Edit
Being a vegan foodie, I must say that Gavino is my favorite place in town with vegan options, for sure! I tried a lot of good and medium good restaurants allover the island, most of them with the same boring vegan options, or salads, or burgers, or just greens.... not like Gavino! In Gavino you have a menu for every taste, fish, meat, and you have a great vegan selection of plates, carefully thought, not boring, fresh, different, tasty. In more than one time that I've been there with a friend, the chef itself created a special dessert for us, with a big smile of his face.
Read moreI mut say, there is no other restaurant that takes care of vegan options like gavino, my experiences have been always great!!!!!!! Congrats
ps: If I could, i would rate Gavino with 5 stars!!!! Althoug is not a fully vegan restaurant, those vegan options are the best!

Bad experience - Edit
The menu has lots of vegan options (about 7/8) but unfortunately it was not a good experience here. Ordered tofu and sautéed veg and stuffed courgette. The tofu and sautéed veg was dry and bland and the stuffed courgette came with dairy cheese on instead of vegan cheese. Staff weren’t too bothered about this mistake either. It’s also expensive for what it is.

Excellent - Edit
Staff were very clued up on veganism here and the menu boasted some nice options. Ambience is lovely, we sat outside and the interior is great too. The vegan ravioli was amazing as was the risotto. There was also two burger options and at least one more option i forget. Went with non vegans also and everyone raved about the food, it was also presented very well. Recommended

Worth 5 stars! - Edit
Fantastic food and really friendly service - in my opinion the best restaurant for vegan options in Funchal. There is a seperate veg part in the menu of which all dishes can be made vegan (starters and soup as well). Additionally there were two vegan dishes of the week (Pumpkin Risotto and Pumpkin Ravioli) which were amazing! The Ravioli were one of the best dishes I have had for a really long time! Every dish is extremely tasty and arranged very beautifully. The brownie was awesome. I definitely recommend going there for dinner when you visit Madeira!

Great vegan food and drinks in Old Town - Edit
The staff are very friendly and attentive and care about what they do. In the 3 times we visited the restaurant the chef came out on several occasions to check we were happy with our food. I recommend the stuffed mushroom starter and the 6 euro lunch deal (plate of food, soft drink and coffee). Also the champagne sangria!

Not good - Edit
We had the seitan and the burger. The seitan is the same one you can buy in all the supermarkets, nothing special - bit bland. The burger was not nice...soft, like sticky pate and no bun.

Knowledgeable staff, good food, cosy restaurant, good location - Edit
Knowledgeable staff, good food. Delicious bolo do caco with vegan garlic butter, at least two vegan main dishes and a beautifully decorated vegan brownie as dessert. The seitan steak was special and tasty, but served with way too much couscous. Would have loved to have seen more variation with veggies and colour, instead of just gluten overload. The “veggie burger” was not at all special. The waitress kept making really rude jokes, pretending that the plate she served was with “real meat, normal butter, haha just kidding”. Not at all funny in my opinion, but rude and making me feel taken less seriously.

Lovely and helpful staff. Vegan options on the menu and having spoken to the chef I’m confident that he understands vegan food and is passionate about what he does. He was very happy to help with any questions I had and didn’t make me feel I was an inconvenience. Will be a frequent visitor while here. In a lovely area of the old town.
