Poor food, misleading menu

We showed up with a party of 11 at Gabriel’s on the recommendation of multiple happycow reviewers. A lovely round table was reserved for us in the corner of the restaurant… and everything went downhill from there.

The quality of food was quite poor. Despite plates being $15-20, much of the veg was obviously canned or frozen. Several omnivores in the party left unsatisfied, as did the vegans.

I ordered the “vegano tacos Al pastor.” Not only was it not very good, but the plate smelled of dairy despite the dish being “vegano” and having asked the wait staff (out of paranoia) to make it without lard or milk. To wit, the menu heading read “vegetarian or vegano” without clear indications of which dishes had dairy or how to order dishes vegan.

If the menu says a dish is vegan, and you ask the wait staff to make it without dairy, and it comes with what sure seems like dairy anyways… what options does one have left? I can’t test the chemical composition of the food, but I’d bet good money that dish had milk.

Go somewhere else.

Pros: Restaurant ambiance

Cons: Menu, Sensitivity to allergies, “Vegan food” wasn’t vegan

Delicious!

Gabriel's has been a long time family favorite among the carnivores so we were thrilled to see that they now have a Vegan section front and center on the menu. We were not disappointed!! We ordered the Enchiladas Verduras and the Taco Al Pastor Vergano. Both were fabulous! The Al Pastor comes with a delicious dairy free guajillo crema made with almonds. We're so pleased we can now join the family with enthusiasm when they suggest eating at Gabriel's.

Pros: Creative vegan menu items, Very helpful service, Plenty of parking

Good group dining spot

Options for all our party! Vegan options are clearly marked and some are above and beyond the traditional Mexican fare. Sweet outdoor patio. If in the area, check it out.

Not bad!

While I really appreciate the vegan/vegetarian menu and some of the thoughtful vegan dishes listed therein (e.g. mixed veg tamales, cauliflower tacos al pastor) I have to say I found the food to be a little bland (I ordered the tamales). But maybe it was just a bad night? I will also note that the dinner menu as of 4/1/23 does not have a vegan option for the elote, which made me sad as I had wanted to try that! The atmosphere was nice though and the staff, super friendly. It was also packed, which is usually a good sign!

Great New Mexican Vegan

Hadn't been here for a while (pre-pandemic) and was delighted to see the updated menu has a vegan section with many more options than in the past. We had a great meal and will be making this a regular spot for us. The hostess indicated that more vegan items are planned including a vegan desert ... let's hope!

Pros: vegan options clearly marked on menu, plenty of vegan options, beautiful setting

Cons: a little off the beaten path

Excellent southwestern

Tamales were good but not exceptional but black bean enchiladas were terrific. Tacos pastor were also amazing. Guacamole at tableside was very good. So many options are available and they really have a separate vegan menu.

Pros: Very good vegan menu, Beautiful patio and indoor dining, Variety of vegan options and unusual ones

Cons: Fast paced, Location a bit out of town

Vegan Must!!

Gabriel’s was amazingly accommodating to vegan diets after only being able to have French fries for days in Santa Fe. I had wonderful tacos verde with rice and beans and a mojito. The dish was fully vegan without me having to make any changes, and totally delicious! If you are vegan you must stop here.

Pros: Vegan section of menu, Great drinks

Cons: Expensive
