Poor french toast and poor service - Edit
Ordered vegan french toast. It was one of the most expensive items on the menu. It came with two dry looking pieces of bread and 4 small pieces of fruit. Complained and they put banana and peanut butter on it as on the menu. They put the tinyest amount of peanut butter on it so we asked for more. They said they would only give more for an additional charge. Very disappointed.

Not impressed - Edit
Free Bird Cafe is a lovely spot where everything is decorated with care and love. Unfortunately, the food isn't very good. Flavours are lacking, the portions are quite small considering the prices and the ingredients' choices are sometimes a bit surprising (non peeled potatoes with black spots in the Khao Soi and grated purple carrot instead of crunchy noodles on top). I wish the menu was a bit smaller but have better executed dishes.

fifty-fifty - Edit
Samosa delicious but 2nd times less than first time. Coffee excellent. Pumpkin dish ok but nothing special. Dish with patatoes very disappointing because patatoes with black spot skin and tasteless sauce. Burmese salat consisted of half leaves and half rather hart stems. In 3 times never satisfied, thus never again. There are many places in town with better food.
Read morePros: Consistently vegan. Some nice salats.Very friendly, I like the charity idea. Nevertheless...
Cons: somewhat overpriced. Ordered 2 takeaway salats, without onion but were full of it. Once was told, the wrong day off.

Stick to the Thai food for cheaper options - Edit
The restaurant is clean, eclectic, supports a good cause, and has a small shop of natural products. Ordered the Burmese tea leaf salad (good!) and the iced cocomocha (really good! Especially on a hot day!)

Charity restaurant and best brownie I had in Asia! - Edit
This restaurant is a charity to help Burmese refugees. The menu is 100% vegan (and I've not seen on the menu the drink with honey). The food consists of Burmese and western dishes. It's a bit pricey but it's for a cause. The place has nice vibes and it's pleasant to stay here. In terms of food, I had the samossas that were tasty with their green sauce, a smoothie that could have had more flavors and a terrific brownie! The only real one I had in Asia. The place worth the try just for it! Some other dishes look quite ordinary, but they're good.

Love it - Edit
There is not much more to say that hasn't already been said. The food is incredible and the intention of the restaurant is amazing. 100% of the proceeds goes to their charity foundation Thai Freedom House. I don't think it gets much better than that; good food and good intention.

Good food and amazing cause! - Edit
The menu, which served everything including breakfast all day, was extensive with many options. We had a smoothie bowl, a smoothie and hummus plate. All were very good and exactly what we were craving! The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was welcoming. We definitely recommend, especially as it’s for a good cause.

Great place - Edit
Great extensive vegan breakfast, salad, sandwich, bigger meals menu and drinks menu. Lovely staff. Great cause. Preloved books and clothes for sale also along with a selection of ethical/vegan goods eg bamboo straws, homemade deo, kombucha, Vega chocolate etc. 100% of profits help Burmese refugees. The potato hash was great. Interesting to try and compare the Burmese cuisine to Thail.

NOPE - Edit
I get this is a charity and i'm more than happy to give money to this important cause as i do with other causes that I am passionate about, however this place was a total rip off and the food was awful. It took over 10 minutes before our order was taken and the food came before our drinks.
Read moreWe ordered a sandwich and the samosas which were the most basic and bland I've ever had. It felt like a child had made it. Literally 2 slices of bread with a dollop of hummus, lettuce and a tomato. Probably the worst sandwich I've ever had...and to make matters worse we were charged an extortionate amount for 2 dishes with no drink!
Cons: Bad food, Over priced, Bad service

Free Bird House is such a gem! Not only because of the fabulous menu (lavender latte anyone?), the quirky interiors or the second hand shop in the back, but all the profits made go towards helping minorities, and in particular Burmese refugees.
Read moreThey do western style foods like french toast, pancakes and smoothie bowls, along with traditional burmese meals. I had the papaya shan salad, apple cider limade and a lavender latte made beautifully by the barista. Throughout the month Free Bird hosts a range of events. One particularly eye-catching is the lunch meet up Nomad Girls Wednesdays. Definitely need to check that out next time around!

Wonderful food and a beautiful cause! - Edit
Not only does 100% of the profits go to a charity that supports refugees from Burma and minorities in Thailand, the food is also exceptionally good. The Burmese papaya salad was a wonderful mix of flavours. It was nice to have something different, it was very unique to anything we have tried before. The coffee is also one of the best vegan cappuccinos I have had to date! So good! I'm happy to pay extra for the cause, the quality of food is a wonderful bonus!

All the dishes we had were great. The burmese pennywort salad was something really special, I've never tasted these flavours before. And the Drinks are just amazing. The Lavender latte with almond and coconut milk was maybe the best vegan latte I've ever had. That you support the Thai freedom house with just eating there is an additional plus.

The Free Bird Cafe is not the cheapest option around. But since all the money goes to charity work, we didn't mind paying a little extra.

We were there for the Weekly Nomad Girls Lunch where all women are welcome to meet up every Wednesday at 12pm over delicious vegan, organic, local food.

We had the
1. Free Bird Green Tea Leaf Fried Rice 110 Baht
A Free Bird Cafe original, combining lots of veggies, organic purple rice and key ingredients from their Green Tea Leaf Salad.
2. Chickpea Curry 110 Baht
Burmese style, inspired by Indian Chana Masala, made of whole chickpeas, red and yellow curry, capsicum and long green beans.
Food was really, really good. I would totally go back again if I'm here longer.

Some nice dishes and a great cause - Edit
This is a great cafe in the old town, with all proceeds going to education and other programmes run for Burmese refugees in Chiang Mai. Their dishes are slightly more expensive than other places but I saw it as a donation so didn’t mind. Their Khao Soi is amazing as are the smoothies and vegan chocolate brownie. It can take some time for things to come out when busy but it was always fresh and tasty.

Tasty, but very expensive - Edit
I was excited to try this place out, but taken aback at the prices. I understand it’s healthy and profits go to a great cause, but wow! That being said, I ordered the cheaper things. The Burmese tea leaf salad was very good (95B) and tasted authentic and the cacao mocha drink was incredibly tasty (95B). Service was a bit slow, self serve water available, and lots of take home goodies to buy.

The raw cacao superfood bowl was heavenly. Chocolate smoothie layered with fresh fruits, shaved coconut, chia seeds and more. Nutritious and delicious it was sensational! A must try while in Chiang Mai. The ambience is lovely too with lots of plants at the entrance and a nice little gift shop and used clothing to buy too.
