Mediocre set lunch menu but lots of choices a la carte - Edit

The first time we ordered the set lunch offer of the day (6.50 $) consisting of a choice of 3 starters (we chose tamal with guacamole and empanada), lasagna with a mashed lentil-vegetable filling, passion fruit or naranjia juice and soft ice cream. Overall the portion size was rather small and the taste mediocre. We came on a Saturday early afternoon on a weekend with special activities (dance, documentary screening, yoga) throughout the day. This might explain why one of the waiters appeared a bit lost about our order. We were intrigued by the good reviews but were not impressed after visiting Govinda, Café Libre and Café de Nucallacta - though we did not try any food off the menu (only the daily lunch offer).

On our return we ordered a modified version of the portobello mushroom "steak" with fries and without the bun and the gourmet lentil burger without the bun, ham, cheddar and fries (basically just the lentil patty with a side salad, which was delicious). For dessert we had the Crepe Suzette (with blackberry sauce, caramelized oranges, flambé in rum) and a cafe latte with homemade almond milk. Food was very tasty and the waiter attentive and knowledgeable. However, portion sizes are relatively small for the price.

Nevertheless, we are glad we have Fratello a second chance and would go back to try some of their seitan dishes.

Pros: Nice location by the river, Lots of vegan choices (salty and sweet), Homemade food (including fresh almond milk)

Cons: Small portions for price, Taste mediocre (set lunch - nothing special), Waiter little bit lost during first visit

Vegan paradise - Edit

I wish I stayed in Cuenca longer to go back to Fratello Vegan! It's a bit out of the city centre but worth it - we had lunch in a lovely and peaceful garden overlooking the river. There were a lot of dishes to choose from - Ecuadorian food, Mexican cuisine, tex mex, and even some French desserts like the crepes Suzette! We had the burger and fries, tomato soup and salad. Everything was fresh, homemade and tasty.
Staff was very friendly.

Pros: The only 100% vegan place in Cuenca , Fresh and tasty food , beautiful setting

Cons: weird opening times, not open for lunch but from 2

I spent the day exploring the city with people who were NOT interested in vegan food and almost didn't go but I'm SOO glad I did. The owner was so kind, informative and super patient with me. I had a long trip ahead of me the next day so I ordered both dinner & breakfast AND lunch for the next day. Got wings, potatoes, a crepe and a crepe. The owner even brought out ice cream for me to try as I waited. Place is located beside a river & is gorgeous. Total vegan restaurant in LA vibes. Must-go in Cuenca.

Pros: Food, Owner, Atmosphere

Cons: Location, N/A, N/A

Fantastic Find! - Edit

This place is a little out of the way but it was worth the walk.
All food is vegan. They offer crepes, "nutella", bbq chick'n wings, nachos, coffee, artesanal beer, waffles and many other things.
I had the crepes with nutella, strawberries and cream and it was very much appreciated after the lack of vegan sweets available. The nachos were also delicious, not exactly the "normal" type of nachos but they were good.
The only let down was the coffee, I don't know if they use more water rather than frothed milk but it was lacking body and was watery to drink.
Make the effort to find this place and you will not be sorry!

Pros: Great portion sizes, Yummy dessert, Good variety

Cons: Very average coffee, A little outside of the main area

Hidden gem on the banks of the Tomebamba - Edit

A bit outside of the old town lies this beautiful restaurant. It has outdoor seating right next to the Timebamba and you have a beautiful view of the river while eating - it can get a bit fresh though, bring a jacket. At 5pm I still got the lunch menu which was good but not extraordinary. The water melon juice and vanilla ice cream stood out positively. The waffles and crepes other people were eating looked awesome - next time.

Only vegan restaurant in town! - Edit

Fratello is off to a great start. I met the chef/owner and his sister while I was there and they recently became vegan and decided to change over their meat-serving restaurant over to a vegan oasis!

I think it will take some time for them to work out all of the kinks, but when they do, they're going to have a rockstar restaurant on their hands that will be known as the first ever all-vegan restaurant in Cuenca.

Food was good and there are some value items on the menu as well. Location is prime, right by the river, although a bit out of the center of town. Right near the start of the river walk in Cuenca.

They also serve vegan ice cream!

Pros: All-Vegan, River View Seating Available, Fresh
