SO GOOD! Favorite Petaluma restaurant - Edit

UPDATE Dec 2017: I made this review under the previous owners, I now have some serious concerns based on all these reviews saying they're putting meat in the vegan dishes. Order with caution and say the word vegan 500 times!

My girlfriend and I (both long time vegans) have made this our new favorite place for a dinner date. The food is delicious, prices are reasonable, and staff is sweet and friendly.

Make sure you ask for the special vegan/vegetarian menu! It is a whole separate menu (green-ish instead of reddish - very appropriate!) and has lots of great stuff that's not on the other menu.

There are a few items on the veggie/vegan menu that may not be vegan, like the Honey Walnut Tofu (honey), and a couple things like fried rice can be made with egg or no egg, so just make sure to be clear when ordering that you want the vegan version.

Our favorite dishes so far are the vegan orange chicken and the eggplant and tofu in plum sauce.

The staff don't speak English very well, but they're very nice and we haven't had any misunderstandings with our orders.

The ambiance is pleasant, nice Oriental decor, simple and clean. Great place for a date.

Would give 5 stars if they only served vegan food!

Very good but . . . - Edit

The food and service at Flowering Tea House are good but, and this is a huge BUT, be very careful to ask for and order from the separate vegan menu. The first time I went the vegan menu was there with the regular menu that the server offered me. I ordered food of of the vegan menu and had a good experience. The second time I went, the vegan menu was not included with the regular menu. I was in a bit of a hurry and just told the server that I wanted vegan kung pao. The server repeated that back to me and again when offering me the food. It tasted different than the first time I had it but I didn't pay that much attention. Big mistake. I believe that I was served and ate a huge plate of chicken kung pao. I became really ill. Believe it or not, I went back again and this time asked for the vegan menu and made sure to point at the dish I wanted and had no problem. Seems strange to have to do this in a place that frequently serves vegans and is familiar with the term, but for some reason I'll never know why even if you say you want vegan something you won't get it unless you ask for the menu. At least that was my experience. That is not to suggest that the other group that was served meat did not order from the vegan menu too. We have so few good healthy vegan options in our area that I will keep going and just be very careful with communication

Pros: Good, healthy food (most of the time), Friendly service, Very reasonably priced

Cons: May be served meat if you don't order carefully

nice menu - Edit

I heard about this place and had to check them out. Sounds like it was a total nightmare for others. I had the Mongolian beef vegan dish and the vegan pot stickers. I thought both dishes were good and would get again. I did come with 3 others and they were meat eaters and they thought everything was good, Not great. I believe all the fake meat vegan is soy products.
They also use a fair amount of oil in the frying of food. I try to avoid oil but some time I can’t completely avoid it.

avoid this place - Edit

A group of us came here specifically because of their wide selection of plant based meat. We ALL exchanged our conventional menus for the vegetarian ones. Ordered some vegetables, tofu and some plant based meat dishes. The first bite of shrimp did not taste vegan, neither did the beef. Chinese restaurants often use bicarbonate of soda to soften and disintegrate the tough muscle, and that flavor was dominant. We asked the server who pretended we had ordered beef and shrimp, even though she had given us vegan popcorn chicken.

They did not comp the meal and pretended it was no big deal. She did offer to give us the original vegan version of what had actually ordered, but by then we had lost our appetite.

Pros: large selection of plant based meat dishes

Cons: don't actually serve you the plant based meat dish

Posting this review on behalf of a Facebook friend (who is an outspoken vegan activist and entrepreneur).

Sharing this as HappyCow Ambassador so fellow Happycow users are informed.

Out of consideration for my friend's privacy, I limit this review to the facts of the incident:

- A group of vegans went to the place, as they had heard about the big vegan menu
- They asked for and received the vegan menu
- They ordered a number of dishes, among them vegan prawn and vegan beef
- Suspicious about the taste, they inquired whether it was really vegan
- The waiter informed them that they had been eating real beef and real shrimp.
- When they inquired how this could happen, as they specifically ordered from the vegan menu, they were told that the waiter had not fully understood (which nobody at the table could believe)
- there was no excuse from the restaurant.

Please inform yourself also in other places before going to this restaurant. There are supposedly a large number of very negative reviews, regarding being served non-vegan food and sanitary concerns.

Good Variety of Vegan Options and Faux Meats - Edit

More vegan options than a typical Chinese restaurant. Especially good for going to dinner with non-vegan friends/family as they have many faux-meat items.

Nice atmosphere and staff. Always accepting of our questions and concerns.

Pros: Separate vegan/veg menu, Many faux-meat items for those who want that, Nice atmosphere

Cons: Most of regular menu is meat based

Separate vegan menu! - Edit

Fantastic choice! The food was delicious. They have a separate vegan menu though it says vegetarian. Everything I saw was vegan unless you choose to add egg. One of the people in our group said there is something they put honey in, but that's it! They also deliver!!! I'm so glad we found this place!

Pros: Veg menu, Delicious food, Pleasant atmosphere

Cons: the "vegan drumsticks", the "salmon"
