Serves meat, vegan options available. Part of chain restaurant offering Mongolian stir-fry meals. The main feature is the create-your-own stirfry bar where you choose the veggies and even faux meat (vegan except Quorn), and have it stir-fried. Most sauces are vegan, and there is a chart showing which are. Ask the staff to cook your dish separately. Reported closed December 2016.

Wide selection

We stopped for dinner while traveling thru. It is in a college town, so lots of students and quite "hoppin'" for dinner time. You can choose to have it cooked in a separate wok, so no worried about cross-contamination! They have tofu, seitan, and several other protein options. Lots of vegetable options. Noodles or rice. Tons of sauces to customize your meal.

NB: If you like mushrooms (they have sliced portobella and button), put them in the separate "meat" bowl so they get cooked more. W/out meat, it is pretty much flash cooking and the mushrooms didn't get cooked...not bad, just not ideal for me.

The atmosphere is loud, crowded, close-quarters, informal. Wait staff are helpful for newbies, friendly and responsive. Facilities are clean.

If you like the Mongolian BBQ concept, this works. Pile your bowl high!

Pros: Veg protein variety great, Wide selection of vegetables

Cons: A bit loud and close quarters

Great options for a chain

I rarely go to chain restaurants, but when I'm on campus and have limited options for lunch, I like Flat Top. They have a huge selection of strifry bowl items, including the biggest non-meat protein selection I've ever seen. On any given day they may have quinoa, tofu, tempeh, "mushroom meat," seitan, and more! All at the same time! Add your own vegetables and rice or noodles, and pick from a variety of sauces -- all labeled with ingredients. You then have the option of add-ons to your bowl, like lettuce wraps, or bread of egg (for the vegetarians), and can indicate you have an allergy with the color-coded sticks that you add to your bowl before they stir-fry it. Bowls with the "allergy" stick are cooked in a separate wok instead of on the grill top, so your food doesn't touch a surface where meat is being cooked. You can order one bowl or do "all you can eat" and go back to try different combinations. Now that I think about all of my experiences at Flat Top, they have the largest number of vegan options in town since you can make so many combinations of bowls. They also give discounts to students with the I-Card, so you can get lunch for under $10.

My main complaint is that lunchtime on campus is a circus. You have to wait in line to make your bowl, and using the allergy stick makes your food take a little longer to cook and be delivered to you. If you're on a time crunch, visit during an "off" window, or take an early lunch to avoid the lines.

I would give them 5 stars for variety, but Happy Cow only lets us rate non-veg* places 4 stars.

Pros: Largest vegan protein selection, Huge variety of vegan combinations

Cons: Can be super busy, increases wait times
