The wrong night?

Maybe because it’s the only veggie restaurant in Matera, maybe because the reviews here are outstanding, we came here full of expectations. We ordered two simple appetisers (bruschetta with fresh tomatoes and “ciaddella”, a typical dish from Matera consisting in wet bread and fresh veggies), followed by two vegan burgers. We waited almost one hour and a half for the appetisers, which were OK but definitely not worth the long wait. Then came the burgers, also OK with a side salad coming straight from the supermarket. I could have expected this from a fast food restaurant, but not from a restaurant claiming to care about the ingredients they source and use. I finally gave a last chance to their dessert, a dark chocolate cake with a strawberry-mint heart. The cake was scalding and not particularly appealing. Maybe it was the wrong night, but I ended up being a little disappointed.

Pros: The only vegetarian restaurant in Matera

Cons: Too long a wait, Mediocre food

Friendly service, delicious food.

Save room for the cheese cake. Owners had cat food on hand and took time to feed local cats. Need I say more?

Pros: Home made Chips

Cons: Didn't find it until our last night in Matera.

Good taste but overpriced

I tried "ciaddella" (that at the end are simply raw vegetables + old bread) and peperoni cruschi. It all tasted good but it was way too expensive for what it was (and for eating in the burning sun). My friend had an "insalatona" that was a very simple green salad with a few pieces of raw vegetables.
Sodas are artisanal, I suggest to try them.

Pros: Typical food

Cons: Price

Local dish of fava bean and chicory.

Enjoyed the local dish of mashed fava beans and chicory. It was like a warm bowl of comforting mash potato and greens. Tasty and simple local food.

One tiny flaw...

Loads of vegan options! Informal, fantastic atmosphere. Super friendly waiter! ☺ Vegan desert was possible but not on the menu. Just ask for it! Multilingual menu: German, French, English and of course Italian. BUT! Unfortunately they used a microwave quite a bit and that's a no go for me in a restaurant!

Pros: A lot of vegan options, Informal and pet friendly

Cons: MICROWAVE! NO GO!

Decent food, vegetarian with some vegan items

Nice restaurant, mostly vegetarian items with some vegan ones. I was surprised to see falafels, hummus, and baba ganoush on the menu since they aren’t something I associate with Italy. The only vegan dessert available was what the server called a “chocolate pie” which turned out to basically be a brownie. We would have eaten there again, but they were closed the following day.

delicious meal, great service

I had the vegetable crudite, fried veggies, polenta, and the cruchetti. All were very good but the fried vegetables were my favorite. The coating was crispy and flavorful. This was more than enough food for one person. The portions were very large. I was stuffed by the time I left the cafe.

Pros: plenty of vegan options, large portions, reasonab

Cons: none

Fantastic vegetarian and vegan-friendly food!

I was recently in Matera to visit my host family from my year as an exchange student, and my host aunt and I decided to try this restaurant for a night out. We were amazed, and spent the night eating some of the best vegetarian Italian food we'd ever had!

Fior di Cucuzza has a menu with plenty of options, many of them vegan friendly. A lot of the food or the style in which it's cooked is specific to Southern Italy, and you can really taste the high quality of their local ingredients. It can be a little pricey for some (main plates are in the 10-12 euro range), but it would also make for a fantastic night out if you've been saving your euro cents during your whole trip. : ) I've eaten a LOT of top notch Southern Italian food, and this is among my best and most memorable restaurant experiences. If you can, save room for dessert (we split the ricotta cream with peaches) and try one of the housemade liquors (incredible!!!).

Pros: Fantastic food, Local ingredients, Southern Italian cooking style

Fresh food, menu also in English

Cozy restaurant in the center of Matera. Everything on the menu is vegetarian. Menu available in English, Italian, French and German, and staff speaks English fluently. Ingredients are very fresh and locally produced, sothat dishes vary somewhat depending on what is available that day. The food was original in composition and above all very tasty. Nice mix of the typical Italian kitchen with its fresh food and overall culinary quality on the one hand, and not so Italian attitude towards meat on the other.

Pros: Fresh ingredients, Multilingual, Good atmosphere

Cons: Somewhat small portions, average price

Good food, but waited for it

We had barley soup, jacket potato and vegetable tempura. The food is nutritious and tasty. Some beer selection, but a few craft beers were pricey. On our visit there was only one person doing everything - so even though the restaurant wasn't even half full a few of us had to wait to order.

Pros: Healthy, tasty food , Good location

Cons: Slow service

Very good vegan / vegetarian option

I spent 3 days in the area and was positively surprised to find this small restaurant in the city centre. The menu lists a few options that are all made of locally harvested ingredients. I had a very good dinner there (soup + first course) accompanied by a glass of Aglianico.

Pros: excellent food, friendly staff, good location
