Wholesome

I’m a member of the Filmhouse and have a lot of love for it, independent cinema and charity. I’ve been coming here since the mid 90’s and although the menu is wholesome and wholefoods it hasn’t changed much in that times
I had the chickpeas curry with couscous which was tasty and maybe close to a tajine.

Open New Year's Day

A pretty good selection of vegan food and more for veggies! Fun atmosphere and a good place for a snack before a movie. Also open on New Years Day!

Fair vegan food, just nothing special

The Filmhouse Cinema is arguably the best cinema in Edinburgh - I've been there plenty of times watching great independent films or screenings of old classics.
The bar however is quite worthy of mention too. It's pretty big, there are lots of tables and the menu is considerably large. Many vegetarian options, and still a notable amout of vegan options. Yet, the food didn't convince me. I had a baked potato with vegan haggis. The potato was rather small, the haggis rather bland and on top of that it wasn't even properly hot. Don't get me wrong, it was still OK, but compared with what you get at the Baked Potato Shop the serving at the Filmhouse Cinema would lose by far.
Further, the staff couldn't tell which beers were vegan.
If you are really hungry after seeing a movie, the bar is a nice option to have. I wouldn't go there just for the food though.

New favourite breakfast place!

Been here many times for the cinema and a few times for drinks but had never sampled the food despite hearing that there were some tasty vegan options from friends and online.

I had the vegan breakfast which wasn't your usual plate of vegetarian breakfast with missing eggs. It had haggis, scrambled tofu, sausages (pretty sure they were the Linda McCartney ones) so I was more than full by the end. It was quite busy when I went but the service was pretty quick and the staff were lovely and friendly.

You can even catch a film before you go!

Pros: Good size portions, Comfy setting

Cons: A bit pricey (breakfast was almost £9)

One or two vegan options

The Filmhouse is a great venue, and the cafe-bar has a pleasant atmosphere and good service. The vegan options aren't very extensive - I had a slightly bland curry - but they had a couple of options. Not the best place to come for a vegan, but you won't go hungry.

Decent vegan options but nothing special

If you go to the counter and ask, the staff will be able to show you a separate vegan menu. It doesn't have a huge range of options and they're pretty basic (soup, hummus, etc), but the food is pretty good and it's convenient to get something to eat before a film.

Pros: Separate vegan menu, Convenient for seeing a film, Nice surroundings

Cons: Limited, basic vegan options

Great for a snack before a show

I went there for dessert before a movie and had a nice chocolate orange slice (like a Tiffin). They had several vegan options and a separate vegan menu, which looked like it would be a good (but not amazing) place to have dinner before a show. The atmosphere was retro and homey - it had an independent feel to it and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Pros: Friendly staff, Fun atmosphere, Several vegan options
