My favourite place ever - Edit
From the food to the staff to the atmosphere, the whole experience at Fern Cafe is excellent. Cosy indoor seat and super cute outdoor seating in a cute neighbourhood. Different selections everyday of amazing baked goods and pastries and just a stellar menu of food. They had a breakfast sandwich special on when we were there that was incredible so I highly recommend following them on social media to keep up with what they’re up to.

Finally vegan cheese curds - Edit
My only complaint is needed more cheese curds on the poutine. The scrambler was also very good. The baked goods looked delicious. And outdoor seating, what more could you want??

Fabulous little find - Edit
Visited after finding this place on Happy Cow whilst on holiday on Vancouver Island. Myself and hubby had the Big Bad Breakfast Sandwich and our daughter had the pancakes. Both extremely delicious, with lovely delicate flavours. Would definitely visit again if we found ourselves in the area again.

I wish I could eat here every day - Edit
This place was so good we ate here both mornings we were in Victoria. The fried Chick'n was great, the pancakes got rave reviews, and I had the breakfast sandwich both mornings because it was so perfect. The cinnamon bun was just okay, but the rhubarb maple scone was fluffy and delicious. I wish I could have tried everything they made - highly recommend!

Favorite vegan food in Vancouver - Edit
We ordered a breakfast sandwich with has browns and a donut, both really good. So glad we went there! The only thing we didn't like so much were the hasbrowns, they were dry and it was more normal potatoes than hash browns.

Outstanding place - Edit
Great place. They make everything from scratch. We shared a western scramble and a bbq jackfruit scramble. Both were good. We will be back to try out other options.

SO GOOD. - Edit
Café with fab all day breakfast and humongous pastries.
Read moreI had the pancake stack with fried chickun. The perfect kind of dish for a breakfast place that is simple and delicious but so hard to find vegan. It was so tasty and a fantastically oversized portion.
My travel buddy had a west coast tofu scrambler which had a great salsa and delicious potatoes with it.
The pastries looked great but we were too full to take more. Had a very nice drip coffee too.
EDIT: We went back and had a chickun burger and the mac and cheese. They were delicious, although the sauce on the mac could have been a little thicker to my tastes. Also got two great cookies which we enjoyed very much.

Pros: Tasty and huge portions , Stuff that is hard to find elsewhere (IMO), Great animal painting on the wall

Thrilled to find! - Edit
This vegan bakery and cafe is the best! Pastries and cookies of excellent quality and just a treat to eat! Breakfast and lunch items all worth the trip and made us wish for more. Friendly staff fun to chat with, so helpful and quick to laugh. We will be back! We tried the rhubarb scone, perfect, and side of ChikUn, crispy goodness, with excellent matcha lattes. On our return trip a few days later we enjoyed their cheezburger and fries. So good! And a s’more cookie to go. These folks know how to cook! Everything original and delish!

Fern is the only fully Ⓥ game in town. I’m thankful it’s there. Fern has HUGE desserts. Not the place for gluten-free Ⓥ. Basic meal recipes without any frills (yet still kinda pricey). Staff was super cool.

Lovely gem outside of city centre - Edit
Good little breakfast/lunch place. The staff all seem very happy to work here and are very friendly. Probably more for takeout than dining-in because the seating inside is limited (though there is some outside seating for warmer months). Mostly comfort food (burgers/poutine) and also a changing range of doughnuts/cookies/etc. I like the tofu scramble personally (I see other reviewers have not).

Great! - Edit
Updating original review, have been back twice and it’s one of the best places in town! Original review below for posterity.
Read moreNice breakfast, but inconsistent. The two breakfast items are similar in price but with the platter it’s much more food. Great coffee. Tofu scramble was not good, very runny. Focaccia a little dry. Potatoes and sausage quite good. Cinnamon bun was OK, a bit disappointing and lacking in flavour overall, ditto pizza bun. Lots of potential here and great space!

Pros: All vegan, Great space and location, Great sausage/potatoes /coffee
Cons: Food is all prepped ahead of time, not made2order, Tofu scramble was not good, too runny, Disappointing baked goods
FernBakery
Hi Ken,
Read moreThanks for trying us out. We changed up our tofu scramble a bit so it's not "runny" now. Our food is *prepped* ahead of time, certainly not made ahead of time. We are a small cafe so prepping is pretty crucial. The breakfast sandwich has been reduced to under 10 dollars aswell - so also much less "inconsistent". As for the cinnamon bun and jersey joe roll - I'm sorry to hear you did not enjoy them as theyre our most popular items! Feel free to contact us directly via our personal email if you have any furhter complaints you'd like addressed -
info@ferncafeandbakery.ca - reviews are important for businesses, especially small businesses like ourselves just starting out. I hope your cons list wont divert people from trying us out, especially the "disappointing baked goods" part which we feel is pretty harsh.
Ken.thompson
Thanks for the response! I am glad to hear that the feedback might have made a difference. I am looking forward to giving things another go the next time I am in the area, I would absolutely go back. I know reviews are important for businesses, but in a world where the only acceptable review is a 5-star review the whole system breaks down (Note that I still gave four stars!). I'm sorry you think 'disappointing' is harsh.

Decent brunch cafe - Edit
Mixed experience here. Savoury brunch options like the scramble are very good. Cinnamon buns were dry and lacking flavour. Interior tables are uncomfortable. For dine in, the food was served on paper in plastic baskets and the paper disintegrated when eating. I get it’s canteen style but lazy not to offer plates.

A delicious treat! - Edit
We just tried the Fern Cafe for the first time and it was fantastic. The vegan fried chickun was phenomenal. Fantastic crunchy breading, but somehow not dense at all on the inside. The French fries and poutine were on point. The desserts were also excellent. We will definitely be back and I'm eager to try some of their breakfast items which looked great too.

This was my first time dining at Fern Cafe and my husband’s second. We went because he loved his food the last time around and he was absolutely right. Fern Cafe does not disappoint. Everything we ordered was delicious and we hope we get a chance to go back while we’re visiting Vancouver Island.
