A mixed bag with a good heart

We stayed three nights at the converted container room, known as the Unique Farmstay, and had a lovely experience. Each morning, we were greeted by the resident rescue donkey and sheep - every animal here has been rescued - which made the stay feel almost magical. The accommodation is simple and cozy; while it might be considered “basic” by some, especially given its close proximity to the animals, it was exactly what we were looking for. If you're after something more luxurious, the Loft is also an option, complete with an outdoor jacuzzi and sauna.

One major downside for me, however, was discovering that the sanctuary sells items containing dairy. It’s disappointing to see a rescue-focused place support dairy sales, especially knowing the cruelty involved in that industry. (If you’re looking for a fully vegan alternative, I highly recommend Greyton Sanctuary, which is run by a fellow vegan and is absolutely incredible.)

That said, I understand that Farm Sanctuary SA’s main clientele appears to be non-vegan and often quite posh (as reflected in their Google reviews). In that context, the sanctuary still plays an important role in raising awareness - encouraging meat reduction and mindful choices among visitors who might not otherwise think about animals in this way. They also support smaller vegan sanctuaries through their profits, which is commendable.

The place does feel quite commercial, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing - especially when their reach and appeal extend to non-vegans. I'd rather people come here and support animal rescue (even imperfectly) than spend money elsewhere with no impact. So yes, definitely go stay there, meet the animals, enjoy the vegan wine, and support the good work being done. I do recommend it - you’ll absolutely love it.

You can take a tour or even volunteer

This farm sanctuary has been on my "Must Visit" list ever since I knew I would be spending a few days in Cape Town, SA.
I got to meet Pigasso, the painting pig, as well as the other lucky rescued animals now happily living on the farm - maybe less famous than Pigasso but not less cute.
The staff was very informative and friendly and I left the farm feeling that if I wasn't vegan already I would have probably changed my lifestyle after visiting the farm.
If you're visiting Cape Town or the area, visit Farm Sanctuary SA. You'll have an experience like no other.

EXTRAORDINARY LIFETIME EXPERIENCE

This designer farm animal barn is simply one of the most totally unique spots you'll ever experience - just like the famous painting pig that calls this place 'Home' The bedroom studio loft is a chick private living space - separated by an antique spiral iron staircase. Below in their respective stalls, reside farm animals and OINK gallery (Artworks by the famous painting pig!!) Meet Pigcasso, Romeo and Baloo, read a book under the magnificent mountain views or savour compassion under a zillion stars. If you love the road less travelled - and if you like animals and want an experience like no other, then welcome home! This is an exceptional place...

Pros: Totally unique design and experience, Central location, All proceeds benefit the non profit organisation
