Went here hoping to get some dark choc ice-cream that everyone was talking about in the reviews, but they didn't seem to have it in that day.
However, we got some amazingly delicious, creamy sorbets!!
The flavours I can remember that were vegan were:
- Banana
- Fig
- Mango
- Passion fruit
- Banana Kiwi
They may have had one or two more but I can't remember now!
You can get 1-3 scoops on a cone, or you can get a small tub.
There was a little station to get toppings as well, and there was definitely a vegan dark chocolate pieces option, and possibly another option for toppings that was vegan but I can't remember fully.
I got 3 scoops on a cone of the banana, mago, and fig. All amazing!
Fábrica Do Meu Avô Geladaria is a centrally located gelateria offering several vegan gelato flavors (mostly fruit). It was a creamy, cooling, and (at times) confusing experience.
The woman who helped us was helpful, willing to answer any of our vegan-centric questions with enthusiasm and patience. Unfortunately, She offered a flavor with a milk symbol displayed on the label. She swore that the flavor was vegan, but we stayed clear. It’s crucial that I feel comfortable and confident ordering from non-vegan restaurants. One mistake can make me contemplate the validity of the vegan option. Ultimately, we decided to order.
We chose the dark chocolate and the raspberry—both fantastically creamy. The raspberry delivered a burst of fruity flavor. The chocolate amazed me with its chocolate syrup texture and chocolatey taste. I wish more non-fruit options were offered (we had heard about a possible pistachio flavor) but the chocolate flavor overwhelmed our expectations.
The gelato is great. More clarity and understanding of the vegan flavors (although most likely a small mistake) would have made me feel better about the purchases. Fábrica Do Meu Avô Geladaria still remains a wonderful option on a hot day in Tavira.
I hope our experience was an exception: the staff didn’t know about all vegan choices (but they are well labeled) and seemed annoyed, cone wasn’t vegan they told me, grapefruit was so watery and bitter, we threw it away, cocos was creamy but very sweet - wouldn’t recommend.
went several times during my stay in tavira - the “black vegan” is delicious, and mixes so well with any of the fruit sorbets. it’s so nice having more than one vegan option!
The "Black Vegan" is STUNNING - it is so decadent and rich. I keep going back for more.
I tried the banana sorbet too but it was far too sweet. I'll stick with the dark and indulgent black vegan. I think it is better than Badiani's in London.
