Lovely Experience

Located in an old building with lots of charm and character. The owner is very nice. I was so excited to see all the vegan options. I really appreciate that the vegan options were labeled clearly and it's eco-friendly. I love the collection of vegan desserts. I enjoyed the vegan mango lassi. The buffet is mostly vegan. From the buffet items, I recommend the sag dal and channa masala.

Home-style cooking

Kind of a hole in the wall downtown with only a couple tables and unusual hours - no matter. Bring your own containers (they will tare them and charge by the pound), and load up on delicious home-cooked Indian food, most of it vegan (watch out for paneer and cream). Great food, lovely people, mostly vegan, and even better: zero waste! Love these guys.

Pros: Delicious food, Very reasonably priced, Zero waste

Cons: Wish they were open every day

Only Indian place I trust

I’m of Indian descent and I know how involved the use of ghee and yogurt is in Indian cooking. I personally don’t think a lot of Indians who own these restaurants providing only Indian food understand veganism so I unfortunately don’t order food from them.

However, Earthen Jar is a place that I completely trust. The owners are incredibly friendly and completely understand; everything is labeled clearly and there are plentiful options for vegans. I personally love their saag daal and it totally is the comfort food I miss.

Pros: Many vegan options, clearly outlined, Tasty, affordable food, Vegan mango lassi!!!!

Cons: Indoor seating is limited, Outdoor seating is a little uncomfortable

Vegan Mango Lassi - run don’t walk

What an amazing place - buffet style with 8 different vegan options - a vegan mango lassi - and many vegan desserts. The food was all super delicious- not very spicy bc buffet style - but can’t wait to go back.

Pros: Vegan mango lassi , Many many vegan options, Cute outdoor seating

Cons: Wish option for more spicy

Very Kind

This was my first time coming, service was great and welcoming. I will definitely be visiting again! I know they are not currently delivering, but it worked out in my favor to get out of the house, and actually experience the place for myself. Thank you.!

Wonderful food and people

There was a very good amount of vegan food. Only two of the 9 dishes had dairy in them. The cashier was very friendly and made the experience that much better.

We will definitely be going back to Earthen Jar before the end of our vacation.

Great restaurant with lovely staff

Almost all the food options were vegan including deserts. I enjoyed being able to try a little bit of everything. I wish I lived closer so I could come here more often. Definitely a must stop restaurant!

Consistent and good

This place has been around for a while, and while it's certainly not as cheap as it used to be, it is still a reliable option. It is entirely vegetarian, which is great, and the dishes rotate. The price definitely adds up if you get a little too heavy-handed though!

Everything was very tasty. I sampled all the dishes and am glad I did. So many yummy, spicy flavors. A great place for a quick bite to eat. The vegan gluten free carrot cake was delicious!

Yum!

Really yummy assortment of foods. I wanted to give it a 4 1/2. The only reason I wouldn't give this place a 5 is because sometimes the food in the buffet is really old and the tofu in some dishes appears to be grey. But when it's fresh it is so good!

Good, quick food

I have been going to Earthen Jar for about 10 years. The food is good. The restaurant used to be of questionable cleanliness but they have cleaned things up and made some repairs.

Great vegan and gluten free food !

I loved eating at the Earthen Jar. Nearly everything is vegan and clearly marked about what it contains for gluten or allergies, how spicey it is etc.. It is a casual restaurant, and Indian buffet style only with a wide choice of dishes that change daily. I paid $12 for my meal with the mango soy lassi and I think that was quite reasonable compared to other restaurants in the area (and for once I was spoiled for choice on what to eat). Each dish was a different lovely flavor - I tried some of the cold dishes such as the chick peas (very spicey and with mint, yummy) and 2 of the dals. They had some dishes I had never seen at Indian restaurants before, such as ones made with black eyed peas and another with okra and both were quite good. I love that they have brown rice in addition to the traditional white basmati. Then the desserts were about 90% vegan gluten free choices so I could not refuse to try one. They also now have a wide selection of teas, some are non-caffeinated. I loved this place !! May get crowded in cold or bad weather as about half the seating is outdoors.... but they also have take out available.

Pros: Wide choice for vegans/gluten free, Lovely owners/Ayurvedic health store too, Flavors all distinct and lovely

Cons: Small inside room (has outside seating), Plastic forks (wish they used re-usable)

Best Vegetarian Restaurant

THis is my favorite vegetarian restaurant in Ann Arbor. It is also the best vegetarian and vegan food that I've ever had - and I LOVE indian food.

Everything is clearly labeled if it is vegan (and almost everything is vegan).

The owner is a very nice couple. She does ALL of the cooking. You can taste the love.

I just wish they would open a 2nd location in the Detroit area.

Pros: Best Indian food, fairly priced

Cons: too far from me

Good food. Not clean.

First visit there & staff was very helpful as I'm new to Indian fare. Thought the food was very good and really enjoyed the oppertunity to sample many different items. I enjoyed most of what I tried.
Quite disapointed in the clenliness of the restaurant though.
I really couldn't enjoy my meal.
In the future I would only get take out from this restaurant.

Pros: Good variety, Good oppertunity to sample new items

Cons: Dirty & unkept

Pleasant place with delightful food

The Earthen Jar is a resonable yet wonderful place to enjoy a casual meal. The owners are sweet and kind. The buffet offers many great indian dishes. The majority of the food is vegan. Every thing is well seasoned and delisious. The resturant is steady with customers. The decore is just O.K. and they dont serve decafe tea but I realy like this resturant.

Pros: Kind owners, Great food, many vegan options

Cons: O.K. decore, no decafe tea

YUM!!!

This small restaurant located in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor offers delicious, authentic ethnic foods, the majority of which are vegan (and all are vegetarian). After discovering this restaurant a week or so ago I went back twice more and stuffed my face each and every time. Some mentioned that the prices can add up quickly, but I piled my carton high -- it is a self-serve restaurant that charges by weight -- and it hasn't cost more than $10 each time (without dessert), plus I had a good portion to take home with me. My favorites are the vegan macaroni and cheese, vegan lasagna, curried potatoes, scrambled tofu, all of the lentils offered (especially the spicy ones), and the vegan cookies (of course!). If you are looking for a great place to get some healthy, flavorful food, head to the Earthen Jar. It has surpassed Seva as my new favorite restaurant in the area, which is remarkable to say the least!

Pros: ethnic food, prices by weight, one man show

Eat as much or as little as you want!

Don't worry about going hungry here -- start small and take until you're full! It has awesome options, but the place is pretty small. Forget about getting a seat if it gets busy, but waiting is definitely worth it.
