Earth Cafe Marrakech II

  • Veg-friendly Veg-friendly
    ( 7 reviews )

N 1, Derb Nakouss, Riad Zitoun Jedid, Medina (at /near the Dar Si Siad), Marrakech, Morocco,

Serves meat, vegan options available. Vegetarian food comprise 50%+ of the menu, and much of the fresh produce comes directly from the owner's farm. There are also 2 pure veg branches of Earth Cafe - one in Marrakech, one in Essaouira. Directions: From centre of the Medina, the Jemaa el Fna Square, find Rue Riad Zitoun el Kdim, walk down this road for 10 minutes, look for a basic white sign with black writing, 'Earth Cafe' on a peach-orange wall, and the restaurant entrance is immediately down a minor alley, to the left off Rue Riad Zitoun el Kdim - go upstairs. Mon-Sun 11:00am-11:00pm

Bland and overpriced - Edit

I can't see how they justify the prices on the bland and uninspiring menu although it does make a welcome break from tagine and couscous. The juices are ok. At the prices they charge I think they should invest in some paint and new furniture rather than opening up new branches which sell meat.

Pros: Not only tagine and couscous

Cons: Overpriced

Not great, and over priced - wouldn't recommend - Edit

I was surprised to find a vegan friendly place so close to our riad but it was wayyyy overpriced, the food was pretty gross burnt and also got mouldy veg in the pad thai, the place was pretty dead and not very pleasant atmosphere. Go to the henna cafe 1 min from the earth cafe it's a lot better!

Pros: vegan friendly

Cons: overpriced, gross food, unpleasant atmosphere

nice place - Edit

Nice place, nice staff. 50% menu vegetarian 50% vegan. Everything is good, however all the recipes taste similar. Just same food, different shape.

Pros: good vegan food , something different from Moroccan food

Fantastic oasis - Edit

We were in Marrakech for 4 days, and the 2 Earth Cafe locations were amazing. They were a welcome sanctuary from the bustle of the Old Town, and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Tasty, whole food and all vegan items very clearly marked. It was the only place we trusted to get 100% vegan food while in the city, so we went back every day!
Lovely simple surroundings, and great prices.

Pros: Tasty vegan food, Cheap, Quiet, relaxing space

disappointing - Edit

The restaurant was very close to my hotel, but I did not go there more than once as I found it disapointing. The place looks nice, and the menu has enough vegetarian options. The burger I got did however not taste very nice. The burger itself did not have a good structure, it fell apart, just some cut up vegetables squashed together. The root vegetables under the burger tasted exactly the same as the burger itself, and it was not very favoursome. I tasted very earthy, so I suppose the name of the place is appropriate. I was disappointed though, they could do a lot more with this place.

and now for something completely different? - Edit

Well, it was a change from always the same vegetable couscous that's on offer everywhere in Marocco, but still the same vegetables. These however were not overcooked. I had the vegieburger, which was nice, but contained nothing that counts as a replacement for meat, so it wasn't a complete wholesome meal. Maroccans somehow don't have a clue about vegetarian meals. Nice quirky place, friendly staff and not expensive.

Friendly Place, Tasty Food, & Delish Juices - Edit

The signs pointing to Earth Cafe bear the unfortunate words, "soup kitchen," but it was the word "vegetarian" that kept me on the quest to finding it. It's a short 5-minute walk off Jemaa El-Fna, and the signs are prominent. Upstairs off the street, the restaurant is divided into two dining rooms, one with a French menu on the wall, the other with an English menu. (The English side is brighter, overlooking the street.)

Vegans won't have a lot to choose from--there was just one vegan dish on offer the day I visited--but vegetarians have three or four choices; omnivores have the whole menu to choose from, which, in total, is really only about eight items.

Tea, fresh juices (carrot, beet, etc.), and coffee are on offer, and bread and delicious olive oil are served to diners before the meal arrives. The staff were very kind and helpful and can offer recommendations for things to do and see in Marrakech.

The sole vegan dish on offer the day I visited was a "veggie burger." The ingredients were seemingly at odds with each other (veggies seasoned with oregano, and finished with coconut and mango sauces?!), but the potato-based "burger" and everything on the plate was scrumptious and filling.

Prices are a bit high for Morocco; 70 dhiram is the going price for a meal here, but in terms of quality and presentation, the prices seem fair.

Pros: Vegan-friendly, vegetarian-friendly, friendly staff

Cons: only one vegan choice, a bit expensive, \
