Normal food, "pretentious" menu

I've been to Dumbo with a 50% discount from The Fork, otherwise I could have not afford it. They have a fix menu at dinner, you can choose between 3 (31 euro) or 4 (37,50) courses. They are all small plates to share.
I was very excited about going but at the end was an average experience.
The dishes were nice, some more (really like the mac and chees) some less (not like at all the "chicken nuggets" - was overcooked and burner, and the Luisiana Dumbo Gumbo was completely taste less). The rest of the food was fine.
BIG DISAPPOINTMENT: the first dish - Coco loco calamari - were not available but we discovered this just after receiving the plate. Instead of the calamari we get two slices of bread with some king of mushroom sauce.
My personal opinion is that, if you wanna have this kind of fusion cuisine in a posh atmosphere, you should have very good dishes, otherwise everything seems a bit of a farce.
The staff was very nice and caring.
I would never go back there without a discount, not worth it.

Nice restaurant with excellent staff

We were in the neighbourhood on a Thursday night. We have read the make reservations in the weekends.

You can choose for 3 or 4 courses and have the extra course instead the dessert. I didn’t know this, other wise I would have chosen a 3 course without dessert (I try to avoid sugar). They don’t have an English menu yet but they are working on that. On the 1st of March 2020 they will have a new menu. Not sure it changes every month.

Pros: All vegan, Friendly staff, Nice interior

Nice but not mindblowing

There’s a set menu of either 3 or 4 courses - we took the 4. It’s a shared dining concept which I liked. All the dishes were nice, but some lacked a bit of “oomph” - a few were a bit bland. The lasagne was quite special though! I also thought the mac and cheese with avocado was inventive, but could have used more seasoning. Staff is friendly and attentive. Time between courses was perfect - not too long not too short.

Experience Dumbo

Lovely place with excellent quality/price ratio, just don't be in a hurry. I think Dumbo is meant as an experience :). Still I came in early, mentioned the time I needed to leave for a concert to the very helpful staff and finished in time (3 courses in 7 parts).

Pros: All very well cooked and served, Price/quality ratio, Pleasant artsy style

Cons: Music might not suit anyone at that level, Kitchen needs time

Mixed feelings about the food, pretty slow service

Since most things on the menu sounded good and we couldn't really choose, we ordered the three-course surprise menu. The three entrées were falafel (I've had better), fried banana (really weird combination with ketchup and mayo) and sweet&spicy chicken nuggets (delicious), the mains were tahine noodles (pretty yummy), satay (delicious sauce and okay tempeh) and mac&cheese (itself okay, but weird combination with avocado), with a magnum with raspberry as dessert (delicious). All in all a mixed bag for me. The atmosphere was quite nice and the place was pretty busy. The service was friendly but a bit slow, we spent about two hours in there although we ate quite fast. The damage was €40 incl. 1,5 drinks per person so just slightly pricey, but they messed up the bill twice until I corrected it.

Pros: Inventive dishes, Good atmosphere

Cons: Some weird flavour combinations, Slightly slow service

Full vegan dining experience

I was on my guard when I made reservations as there were some comments about waiting time. We arrived at 7 pm and I must say everything went super smoothly! Waitresses were very attentive and had an eye on everybody. Actually the kind of service I haven't seen in a while!

So we were there with notorious meat eaters with a big appetite and who love good balanced meals with unexpected tastes. They were flabbergasted!

According to the waitress the whole menu and crew has been changed a few weeks ago and it works. No more 9 course meals for 42 euros but shared dining with little and bigger bites. The bites arrive in random order, we were with 5 and we shared everything (starters are then a little nibble but we just wanted to taste all)

The food was really a-ma-zing! Unexpected tastes, and really something different than the standard (mostly junkfood) vegan fare. The grilled melon was a big positive surprise, as were the chick(en) wings, sushi, topinamboer (aardpeer) and everything really...

We paid 46 per person including tips and we all had a cocktail and some of us two! I traveled from Amsterdam to Rotterdam for this and I was not disappointed!

Pros: Edgy/artsy interior , Skilled personnel , Unexpected tastes / food is super good!

Cons: Can't think of any!!

Terribly understaffed

We had high expectactions after reading all the nice reviews; however we were very disappointed because of the extremely slow service.

It took 1 hour to get the first appetizer, and after 1.5 hours we had just gotten our second one. By that time we had lost appetite, so we just cancelled the rest of the order and we left.
By the way, we were not the only ones to leave, as a couple on a table nearby also left as nobody ever came to them to bring them a menu (which is such a basic thing to do).

I acknowledge that despite everything the staff was friendly and polite, and it seemed they were doing the best they could; but managing around 20 tables for just one person doesn't seem fair.

About the food, we had the calamari and the dumplings. The calamari were kind of sweet and they did not remind at all the non-vegan version; but the dumplings were fantastic. It's such a pity that we did not try other dishes from their menu.

From what I understand, they have changed the concept of the restaurant recently, and I guess they are still adapting; but this situation was something they should've considered beforehand.

I hope they will improve largely the speed of the service because it's worth visiting for the food and the atmosphere.

Pros: friendly staff, nice vibe

Cons: extremely long waiting time

Good Service Too Much Fried

Compared to other vegan restaurants we tried in Rotterdam, Dumbo had too much fried food for our taste but the service and atmosphere was very nice.

Pros: Good service, Nice atmosphere, Nice sauces

Cons: Too much of the food is fried

Good atmosphere, not the food...

We went to Dumbo as for all the good reviews. Our waitress was really nice and the wine was good. Unfortunately the food didn’t meet our expectations - they over used smoked paprika, the food was original and creative but nothing was tasty. Something just didn’t work... We had a silken tofu (it was the only thing in our meal we liked), tomato tartar, crispy mushrooms and shawarma. For dessert we had panna cota that was made with too much agar agar and therefore way too solid to eat. Everything was beautiful and colorful but that’s about it.

Pros: Good atmosphere , Great service

Cons: food is not so good, to be gentle

The food is nice (but a bit expensive), we took some dishes from the menu instead of going for the surprise menu.

Delicious and creative (and 100% vegan)

We picked the surprise menu and we did not regret it one bit. The experience was great.

The food was delicious, putting together unexpected flavors which matched extremely well. Some foods I would normally be wary of were prepared so well, I loved every dish. The food was not bland at all, an explosion of amazing, unexpected flavors, and we left very satisfied.

The staff is very enthusiastic, and the cooks get a lot of creative freedom, you can taste the passion.

Every once in a while the surprise menu changes, which makes it very interesting to return again. Which we will.

For a quick meal: you can order a la carte. If you have the time: treat yourself with one of the surprise menus.

Highly recommend!!!

Finally 100% plant based restaurant in RDM!

They've just openend, but already I'm thanking the vegan gods for this addition to Rotterdam. The downfall of a lot of vegan restaurants is that their atmosphere is as if you're in a canteen. Dumbo is the opposite. A street chique (as they say), sexy vibe with food I've not tried somewhere else before (so no hummus!). Silken tofu dashi. Deep fried artichoke. Caramelized salsify. Beetroot tortellini. They have 3 menus to chose from but also a separate menu for small dishes/snacks.

PS I loved the red house wine (Primitivo) and the green velvet cocktail (matcha and chocolate, sounds weird but is great).

Pros: Exciting and good food, Great vibe, Friendly staff

Disapointing diner

We were very enthousiastic about a new vegan restaurant in the neighbourhood.
However it turned into a disapointment.
The presentation of the dishes is nice, but the taste is very blend, the food sometimes very dry.
Actually the typical comments non-vegan/vegetarian people would make about vegan/vegatarian food.

We paid 150 euro for 4 person, the diner took over 2 hours, you get a lot of small dishes, but after the diner everyone was still hungry.

Disapointment

Casual fine dining

Dumbo brings something new to the table, and it's delicious. A street chique restaurant featuring "delicious food without a heartbeat", as they say. They don't advertise as being plant-based, but instead focus on a casual fine dining experience for a wide audience. It is supposed to leave the carnivores surprised and humbled that they had an entire dinner without any animal products - that they ate.. vegan.

With a 10-course menu it's difficult to pick the stand-out dishes, but the onion bhaji with coconut coriander dip was definitely one of the highlights. I was happy to see it's also available to order seperately from the snack menu. Other favourites were the silken tofu dashi with seaweed caviar, and the coconut cake with pomegranate.

The staff was very attentive in general and also gave a short explanation before each dish. I was surprised to see the menu's were very affordable, ranging from €24 to €42 for 8 - 13 small courses.
