Nice food! - Edit

Went here for lunch, about 12:30 in November

Had the nachos and my partner had the jackfruit panini - both were very nice!!

Very reasonable prices too considering its a nice pub in Maidstone!!

However, the throughout the whole meal I was freezing!! Please turn up the heating :(

If Maidstone parking wasnt so expensive I would be here two or three times a week! :D

Pros: Good value, 100% vegan kitchen, Good choice

Cons: Cold!

Delicious vegan pizzas and Sunday roast! - Edit

Aside from getting there around 3pm on a Sunday when a number of dishes were sold out, my sister, mum and myself had a lovely late lunch at the pub! The Ponga spicy stake pizza was amazing and the Pawaiian (their take on a Hawaiian) was lovely. My mum had their roast dinner and said it was one of the best she’s ever had :) The only negative I’d say is that it’s quite pricey @ £13 for each of our meals. BUT I’m happy to pay that for delicious vegan food as a treat once in a while

Pros: delicious food!, 100% vegan, refined sugar free

Cons: price

Great pizza and cheese - Edit

Visited Drakes 'ponga foods' early December and shared a pizza with my other half.
Really great flavours and the cheeze is to die for!
Lots of options, but quite pricy! Don't mind paying the money to support a small business however, and the service was splendid.

Pros: Fantastic food, Helpful staff

Cons: Pricy, Noisy after 8pm

Cheese - Edit

Great pub.
Slightly deranged if friendly barman/ landlord.

Kid friendly, although a bit of fruity language flying around. ( made our boy snigger a lot!)

Cheese.
Yep.
Cheese like no other vegan cheese. You will not be disappointed. Staff really helpful. Food great value and tasty.

We are looking forward to going again. Well done guys!

Pros: cheese, cheese, cheese

Cons: potty mouth

Delicious - Edit

The food here is amazing however the pub itself is very small and getting a seat is almost impossible on a weekend night. We ended up having to eat from very old and grubby looking sofas.

The food is also more lunch time oriented then dinner as it's mainly light bites.

The chef is very lovely and went out of their way to make some of the key dishes for me without onions.

Amazing! - Edit

We found this place with the help of Happy Cow and we had a delicious meal! Lots of options to choose from, especially home made cheese and delicious burgers. Everything is made with the skills and patience of the wonderful chef, Stephanie!
Dear Steph, thank you very much for the amazing and delicious meal! Especially, for making the dessert a birthday one with the purple candle! We enjoyed the food and keep on going! I hope you included the butter in your menu!

Soooooo goooood! - Edit

Drakes is a cosy, period pub, with a generous courtyard beer garden and located ideally in Maidstone town centre, by the river, and a mere stagger away from various parking options.
Steph's food is to die for (except no actual death required). If you think being vegan and/or gluten-free is about denying yourself, then eat here and think again :-D

Pros: 100% vegan and gluten-free, Town centre location

Amazing selection of food. - Edit

There is a great choice here. I couldn't help but have a three course meal. The ponga cheeses are beautiful. I had the Jack burger main then crumble cake for dessert. I can't wait to go back so I can try more of the menu.

Vegan and gluten-free paradise! - Edit

We had a really excellent lunch from Steph's kitchen at Drakes yesterday. We were welcomed by the friendly bar tender who was happy to serve tap water to my 15-year-old, Gingerella ginger ale to me and very good (and cheap!) real ale to my partner. Steph soon appeared, we discussed the menu and took our order.
We sat outside in the sunshine and Steph brought us some cheezy potato dough balls while we waited for our main courses to turn up. My partner had double grilled cheeze, which was a throwback to the Fortify days, although served with a mouthwatering potato salad with capers and cornichons - yum! My daughter had the nachos with extra BBQ jackfruit - delicious! I chose the BBQ jackfruit burger. I should mention that all Steph's fare is gluten free and vegan, as well as being palm oil free. The burger bun was really great, I hadn't eaten gluten free bread in the past but this was lovely and I couldn't really notice any difference. The burger was served with a mini portion of nachos.
Despite being quite full, we found dessert hard to resist and ordered two of the chocolate hazelnut mousse tarts and a bramley apple crumble cake, which was served with custard and coconut cream! The tart had a lovely base which contained dates for sweetness and a tiny salty twist. There were caramelised nuts on top. Served with vanilla yogurt, this was a winner. The apple cake was also delicious, but my partner wolfed most of that down, quite rightly, as it was his!
Steph is looking to expand the menu greatly in the near future but there is still plenty of choice, including a super healthy salad and Steph's famous cheeze boards!
All in all, the venue lacks refinement (the loos, although clean, could do with a spruce up in particular) but the food and service more than makes up for it.
Do give Ponga at Drakes a try; I guarantee you'll be heading back for more!

Pros: Delicious varied menu, Friendly and welcoming staff, Good value

Cons: Venue could do with a spruce up to match the excel

A Hidden Gem - Edit

Absolutely loved it here! Was really intrigued when we found this place, and loved the tactic from the sign to state "all food made without dairy, gluten, eggs, meat, palm oil and refined sugar".
The cheeses here were the best we've ever had, full of various flavours and really good consistency. We also had the jackfruit burger, potato salad, toasted cheese sandwich and dough balls, all with so much good flavour. Really like the garlic mayo too.
We also had the pleasure too of speaking to the lovely and talented chef who has a real passion for making great vegan food. So nice to see.
Can't wait to go back!! 👍👍👍

10 out of 10 - Edit

Wonderful atmosphere, warm and cozy with outside seating. The kitchen is managed by Ponga Foods : Stef the chef (who is also vegan). Delicious vegan foods cooked by a vegan...whats not to love and generous portions too!

Basic menu (but lovely) at the moment but new menu coming soon with more lovely options. Outside seating in the garden. The dough balls with garlic mayo were just amazing!

Don't forget to order the artizan cheeze board made by Stef.... Vegan heaven!

Pros: vegan food, made by a top vegan chef, artizan cheeze board, 100% vegan kitchen

Cons: no parking (but parking v close by at Fremlin walk
