Tasty & affordable - Edit
— New management —
Read moreGot the pumpkin & sweet & sour ‘fish’ with rice for $3. Love how the pumpkin was so sweet & flavourful!! The soy ‘fish’ was tasty too😄Prices are slightly higher than before but still okay considering that it’s near the Central Business District.
Bak kut teh with rice came with a light broth & didn’t have a super strong herbal taste.
*Their zi char is only available from 11am-4pm, according to one of their staff.
— Previous management —
- Economical rice: cheap & tasty but they sometimes don’t have a wide selection of less processed veggies!
- Best wok hei for hor fun in gravy ($4.50) in SG so far amongst the variations I’ve tried😄Love how their gravy isn’t the vinegary but the savoury but not too salty kind, and how they use really interesting mushroom-based ‘duck’ slices, tasty ‘pork’ slices, button mushrooms, shredded cabbage & other things :)
- Thunder tea rice ($5; only available on Thursdays): Liked how the broth was refreshingly lighter on the palate compared to the other versions I’ve tried, and how the ingredients brought nice layers of dimension to the dish :’) The distinctive fragrance of the freshly roasted peanuts, the crispy bits, the shredded cabbage, and the slightly chewy rice grains... Pure yumz :)
- Claypot rice ($5.50) came with a generous assortment of mock meat, which included mock duck that tasted surprisingly close to the real thing but with a lil’ mushroomy taste. I liked the sweet, bak-kwa-ish mock pork though I’m not a big fan of processed mock meat. The rice was the braised kind & didn’t have the crispy, slightly charred bits I was really hoping for, but this was still quite a tasty albeit unhealthy meal xP I washed this down with a small bowl of (slightly overly salty :X) soup which you can help yourself to at a corner on the right of the shop!😄
Their ginger x seaweed ‘egg drop’ daily soup was surprisingly warm & nice (I didn’t really like their previous two types of daily soup)! 😋
Pros: Affordable, Tasty, Central location

Fine lunch - Edit
We had a quick lunch here. We ordered from the case of prepared food in back, not from the menu. This way seemed to be less expensive. We had a variety of dishes, including a vegetarian duck and some vegetables. It was fine and enjoyable.

average food - Edit
Came for an evening meal with the family and was pretty disappointed.
Read moreMaybe we should have left before we ordered. The owner tried to insist he picked what we ordered and we had to tell him to chill and give us some time. We picked something child friendly for the wean and let him choose his best for us.
He picked some pork ribs and a mushroom dish.
The kids dish was fine and the two mains had a variable quality. The mushroom head dish was decent. The pork ribs were below par. They had sugar cane bones which you had to pick out, it seemed to leave something which kept catching out throats. There weren't terrible but I've had better at a street hawker and paid half the price. The rice was really dry and unenjoyable.
The main issue was the owner constantly watching us and commenting on his food. He can and sat down next to us to tell us about how good his food was and even though my other half gave him some decent Scottish body language he still didn't leave.
When he did leave he kept coming back every two minutes and stood there feet awaybstaribg at us and kept asking how the food was. It was pretty annoying to say the least. Maybe it was us, but it was a pretty uncomfortable night.
He was trying to be nice but just didn't get boundaries. He did give my wee one a sweetcorn ice lolly at the end, which was nice of him.
Not sure if it's totally vegan but he did give me the no egg, garlic and onion chat.
For the food I would have give 3 but the overall experience let them down.
Pros: lots of vegan , location

My go-to place in Chinatown for local cuisine - Edit
I always come here for the Vinegar 'Pork Trotter' Soup because it reminds me of the flavours of ayam masak kicap that I used to eat as a child.
Read moreThe salted fish fried rice is also really good. I'm normally not a fan of ordering fried rice but this has some very unique flavours in it. Seasoned foodies would probably say that it has a strong 'umami' flavour.
I'll definitely return here to try all their other ala carte items.
Pros: Great variety of local dishes, Friendly service, Can order bigger portions to share & eat with big

Enjoyed the food - Edit
Dragon Gate vegetarian has the same management as Kwan Inn Vege group.
Read moreTheir vegan laksa are simple yet very delicious and it only cost $3 a bowl.
They also offer caipng (economic rice) options that doesn't contain a lot of mocked meats, and they're pretty affordable too.
They have quite a variety of zichar food items also, perfect for a meal with large groups.
Walking distance from Chinatown MRT Station

More choices when two vegetarian eateries are just side by side ... - Edit
Dragon Gate Vegetarian is at Temple Street in Chinatown and residing at the place where Yi Xin Vegetarian used to be. So, is Yi Xin Vegetarian gone? No, just beside it. In here, you’ll find those common local vegetarian dishes been served.
Read moreI love the green garnishing and the tasty broth is Bak Kut Teh. Price reasonable, but I can’t remember the exact amount now, as I had it last month early December 17.
Another dish that I like is Mee Goreng (S$4). You can help yourself to a bowl of simple daily soup at no charge.

lots of variety - Edit
This restaurant is a great combination of steam table plus dishes you can order. Their brown rice is good. Most but not all the dishes are vegan. There's a beautiful poster of Ping Jie near the entrance.
