Great Doughnuts

I really loved spending the afternoon at Dough Society, sitting in the sun in the little courtyard with my iced mocha and custard & jam doughnut. Definitely going back to try different flavours!

Pros: Dog friendly, lots of tables

Serious Supply Problems

The doughnuts are obviously great but I have been here three times and every time they have had next to no doughnuts in stock... but today arrived at 2.30 and they had just totally sold out of stock for the whole day. It's a Saturday... but come on! This is not how you run a business. Feel sorry for the staff who have to work here and front up their management's poor planning.

Hi Jay,

Thanks for taking the time to write this review - we understand the frustration in arriving at 2:30 and there being no stock left - believe us when we say we get upset when this happens.

We just want to take a few moments to explain how this happens, and how we’re not that different from other donut shops (especially popular ones) around the world.

We have sales data, and using that sales data we do plan our stock accordingly - throughout the last few weeks we have had stock until the end of the day, or at least until around half an hour before closing, we have to trust this data - the impact of making too many donuts than we may need has a a really detrimental impact in terms of waste and revenue.

Today was no different in that respect, we made as many donuts as we did last week, which took us until the end of the day.

We are scratch bakers, we have a team come in at 2am to begin work and we make the amount we believe we will need during the day, if we have a particularly busy morning we will attempt to make more, but we normally begin to get busy around 11am/12pm, and from start to finish the process to make donuts takes around 3 hours.

We do not make donuts from batter, as stated before we make our donuts from scratch and they are a yeast leavened enriched brioche dough, this unfortunately takes time but it’s the price of creating the product we do, and we firmly believe that this is why they are so popular.

I understand that the above does not solve the problem of us running out of donuts today, and we genuinely are truly sorry for this, weekends can be unpredictable at times but we do not want to be selling out as early as 2:30. We aren’t however unique in this respect, the world renowned and absolutely fabulous team at Brammibals in Berlin frequently sell out early at their two locations, and many vegan donut shops in the USA simply have their opening hours as “until sold out”.

Again, this doesn’t alleviate the disappointment in arriving to no donuts, as a gesture of good will we’d like to offer you a free donut and coffee at our Hackney location when you next come. If you just show the server this message and then your account profile page logged in to show that it’s you we will sort you out.

Loved this place!

Donuts are my all time favorites, so having a vegan donut shop is like a dream come true. I got a lemon lavender flavor and also tried the Nutella flavor my friend ordered. They were both amazing! A bit too sweet for me, but delicious anyway. Will definitely come back!

Pros: Amazing donut , Big portion

Cons: A bit too sweet for me

Fab French toast

Nice toasties, tasty donut (coffee and nut flavour), fabulous French toast from the brunch menu which I will definitely go back for again. The coffee is good too - oat milk as default or bonsoy for 20p extra.
There is spacious seating area which is light and bright (although a bit minimalist). If the weather is ok you can enjoy the outside space which is tucked away from the main street away from any roads.

Pros: All vegan, Quite good value given the size of the donuts, Did I mention the French toast ;)

A lot of choice-and all vegan!

Stopped by here for a quick bite, but since there are currently no gluten free options, I grabbed a donut to take home instead and went to another vegan place nearby where my companion could also enjoy a sweet treat. There’s a lot of choice, including filled donuts. They are rather big and full of sugar, but you’d hardly expect anything else from a donut. Definitely a guilty pleasure, but what a delicious one!

Pros: All vegan , Seating space, including outside

Good coffee and donuts

The donuts are massive and we went overboard and got a box of 6. They do some amazing special editions but if the donuts were smaller I think I would give it a 5

Pros: All vegan

Cons: Donuts are too big

Nice dougnuts, not so cosy atmosphere

Great selection of (big!) doughnuts.

Although there was a wall with plants in the back, the atmosphere was kind of cold and not so cosy (wooden stools).

Fluffy, huge and delicious

This doughnut shop is so nice and spacious and has a wide range of vegan doughnuts. The doughnuts are enormous!! I tried the special baileys cheescake one and it was insanely fluffy. The dough could have been a tiny bit less sweet for me personally, but I thoroughly enjoyed the doughnut anyway and will go back for sure to try some more! Their coffee is good too.

I keep going back!

Living so close is dangerous, I can’t get enough of these doughnuts and so many flavours to try! They are just the right amount of fluffiness while still very chewable. Huge sizes, be warned! ;)

Pros: many flavours, size

Good coffee and doughnuts

Roomy seating area, which wasn’t packed at 10:00 on a cold Saturday. There were 16 flavours of doughnut, including a St. Patrick’s Day special, Guinness ganache. I would happily have any of the flavours on offer. Good coffee.

Pros: all vegan, variety of doughnut flavours

Cons: rather expensive

was expecting more...

When I arrived they had only two variety of doughnuts left: the chai and strawberry basil. Was very disappointed about how poorly they manage their stock. We had both the chai and strawberry basil. I found them both very sugary and doughy. The dough was too compressed and dense, not fluffy enough.

Pros: Unique concept in London

Cons: If you do only one thing, you better be sure that

Decent

Good stuff. Not as good as Brammibals, but what is. The place itself is in desperate need of character, but hopefully that will come in time.

Pros: Mushroom toastie

Cons: lots of white walls

average doughnuts

The flavour combinations available are interesting enough, and the actual cafe is pleasantly decorated, but the doughnuts themselves were quite dry. There are other places to get better doughnuts in London.

Pros: lots of different flavours

Cons: dry doughnuts

So so good - coffee and donuts

Set in a back lot near the high street of Hackney is a brand new donut shop. When I first walked in, they had a whole array of choices and was already busy 20mins after opening for the day.
We tried the lattes, along with the cookie dough donut & the white chocolate cream filled - and they were out of this world!
Would definitely recommend. Only a short walk from Temple of Hackney (Temple of Seitan) - can hit both in one go.

Pros: amazing selection, delicious coffee, baristas/donut bakers are so nice and friendly

Doughlicious

In March last year I was in Berlin and I visited Brammibals vegan donut shop, it instantly became my joint-first-place-with-Black-Cat-Hackney favourite vegan place in the whole wide world, and I wished that London had its own Brammibals...

Well, now we have the Dough Society's first cafe, and whilst it doesn't have the range of food that Brammibals has on often - and, to be fair, it's only been open a couple of weeks - it could well give Brammibals a run for their money!

It's a nice space, very open, airy and wide, and they do a darn fine oat latte. You're not here for that though, you're here for the donuts, and we had a box of six on our first visit, and we came again a week or so later for another three. I'm planning on making this a regular stop on the way to the cinema!

Our firm favourite so far is the Boston Creme, but there's a huge variety of tasty and inventive flavours, and I expect there will be plenty of specials and one-offs and experiments as the years go by!

I also fully intend on popping in to try their toasties in the not-too-distant future, but, as it stands, this is a delightful spot to grab a tasty treat, to sit and enjoy a good coffee, or to pick up a few goodies on the way somewhere else. There's also a loyalty card, a stamp per visit, as if any incentive were required to keep going back!

It's early days for this little cafe, but if this is how it has started I can't wait to see where it goes!

Pros: Yummy donuts, Nice, open cafe, Good coffee

Delicious!

I've only got the chance to try three of their donuts so far, the Homer, Peanut Butter and Pretzels and Brownie, and they were all so delicious.
I will definitely be going back for more!

Great coffee and wide selection of vegan doughnuts

Dough Society's new shop in Hackney is a clean minimalist space serving a wide variety of doughnut flavours and great tasting coffee, with the option of soya or oat milk.

Pros: Great coffee, Wide choice of doughnuts

Cons: Would be nice to have a sugar-free option!
