Serves meat, vegan options available. Southwest fare with a separate vegetarian menu, some of which can be make vegan - ask. Open Mon-Sun 11:00am-8:30pm.
I do like their Jicama salad, but when I went vegan I noticed the salad is much smaller in the takeout container. They don’t add more lettuce or replace the space missing from the meat cheese and sour cream, so the serving of salad is quite small when considering the price. For this reason, I have only had their salad twice since changing to vegan, and not likely to order as I am hungry after such a small salad. I thought it was a fluke the first time being small, but the second time the container was even smaller and only half filled. Fix this and i would give it another star as I just love the salad with all the veggies. I took off a star as you have to aak them what is cooked in butter etc. like there is liberal butter use and so many better options than butter.
Nice mex menu with willingness to mod for vegans. The refried beans are vegan while the whole beans are not so be sure to specify. Was just told the rice and tortilla are cooked in butter so you have to leave off rice and specify not to cook tortilla in butter. Have seasonal burritos that are filled with veggies and great but you'll need to specify no butter on anything. Nice seating area, staff and salsa bar. Would be a great improvement to put a vegan burrito on menu (or taco?) instead of having to walk through each ingredient to order one. Could add mushrooms to fill burrito back up after removing the rice, cheese, sour cream and any other dairy they are adding.
They have a vegetarian menu, some of which can be made vegan. If you get a burrito be sure to ask them not to put butter on the tortilla. Also check your order sometimes they make it wrong
I ordered a vegan burrito from Dos Coyotes only to discover when I took a bite that they had put chicken in it. I have a vegan friend who had the exact same experience and when they told a worker that they had put meat in a vegan burrito, the staff were inconsiderate and simply said that was to be expected some of the time because they also serve meat. They offered some free extra chips for their mistake but the chips are not vegan. Dos Coyotes is not trustworthy and I would definitely NEVER recommend this place to any vegans or even vegetarians.
I work at the South Davis location and we are happy to modify items to make them vegan. I’m vegetarian but my favorite thing to eat at Dos is the original taco...just order the original chicken taco and tell them to swap out the chicken for mushrooms! So good! If you’re vegan, they will cook the mushrooms in foil so that it doesn’t get contaminated by the grill. Also feel free to spice up the SW veggie burrito with additional veggies like peppers and onions! AND make sure to order refried beans instead of the black beans(which are cooked in butter). Look out for our seasonal items too! Hope this helps!! Maybe increasing demand will finally make them add my favorite mushroom taco to the menu 😜
I’m not sure how this place is even listed in the Happy Cow database. There are only a few things that can be modified to be vegetarian on the menu… further modification to make something vegan also renders it quite boring. I ended up having a burrito with beans, rice, guacamole, and salsa. It was mostly white rice. I would give them more stars if they offered roasted vegetables or something more imaginative. Even carnivores would probably like something like that. Won’t be back.
Dos Coyotes has a history of changing the ingredients they use and it is hard without asking a million questions and double checking with a manager to know what is in your food. They make their beans with butter (the owner told me that when he stopped using the butter, customers complained so he added it back in). There is one kind of beans usually without (Anasazi). They fry the corn in butter too, so if you order a salad you think is vegan and it has corn in it on the menu, ask them to leave it out. I have tested out going in several days in a row and asking different employees about things and get different answers each time. I asked their new regional manager to work with our local vegan community (we chatted for 15 minutes and exchanged emails) to make small changes in the way they prepare foods so it would be consistent and there would be more options for vegans - and to mark their menu clearly and train their staff. That was six months ago and he has not contacted me back. In my mind, that probably means they have not made changes. The rice has been inconsistent, but the last time I was there they were using a "non-chicken chicken flavored broth" (but would not call it vegan).
Went in again several times this year. Last time I was told the corn that is mixed into rice is NOT fried in butter but the corn put on salads and tostadas IS fried in butter. My friend ordered a vegan salad and it came with the corn on it. Just ask lots of questions or ask for a manager when ordering. If you care, the chips are fried in a mixed fryer.
Although nothing vegan on the actual menu, the staff is really nice and helpful about adjusting dishes to be vegan. I love the howling tostada and the yucatan salad.
Went with some friends to Dos Coyotes last-minute so wasn't able to call ahead. Approached the counter and inquired about vegan options and the employee serving me was very informed and recommended a delicious burrito to me that only required a couple tweaks to veganize! I was very excited to speak to an employee who seemed informed about all the details. It was a great experience, the only downside is that I was only offered one option but that's more than I could ask at some places so I'm a happy veg.
