Always something new to try - Edit
I love DVS. The service is excellent, the location is great, and the food is delicious. I have had the Soul platter, the TLT with yam fries, a milkshake, cake, and carob cookies before. I will say sometimes the food is more salty and tastes different, maybe because a different cook was there that night or something. My favorite things to get are the raw collard wrap and the mac n cheese, plus the carob cookies.
Pros: delicious food, great service, great location
Cons: food quality varies depending on the cook

This place is such a gem! I had the soul plate and cherry cobbler, both were incredible. The staff was so friendly and welcoming, everything about this place was lovely. Really wholesome, honest, plant food!

Absolutely lovely - Edit
Great friendly soul food place. The food here was all nicely done, not amazing, but very fresh and tasty. Service was absolutely amazing, so friendly and welcoming! Their menu is not huge, but varied enough to eat here relatively often. Loved it.
Pros: Service!

Makes my tummy happy - Edit
Relocating from California, the vegan me a of the world to Detroit would seemed to be problematic for a vegan.
This was my vegan restaurant that I visited and it was great. I've managed to become a regular in a few weeks.
When you go (and you will), get the smothered gravy loaf.

Hail Cesar! - Edit
The Cesar Chavez Salad is THE best vegan Caesar salad I've had, hands down! My dining partner agreed. As my main course I ordered the Soul Platter and the mac-n-cheese was the highlight of the dish for me. I love baked mac-n-cheese. It was super delicious. For dessert, I ordered the peach cobbler, and, oh my, was I in vegan dessert heaven!! Can I just say, holy cobbler!! If I lived in Detroit I would eat here all the time.
My elderly father joined me and my boyfriend and I could tell he was skeptical at first, but he admitted to really enjoying his meal. :) A great place for vegans and non-vegans!

Worth the Drive - Edit
We drove through Detroit at the end of our road trip just to hit DVS. We're glad we did! We had sweet potato cakes, vegan catfish and grits, waffles and tofu nuggets and a breakfast sandwich. All were great! We had a couple of interesting shakes and a delicious peach cobbler for dessert. Knowing we were from out of town the staff made sure to get us in just before closing which was much appreciated. DVS was second place in our family vacation restaurant war competition with near perfect scores.
Pros: great food, original dishes, friendly staff

It's O.K. - Edit
I find this place to be just ok. They overcharge for sub-par food, and don't give much for the price they charge. Some of the items are on the salty side as well. I'd say this would be your third option for vegan food in the city.
Pros: Environment, Nice "Soul food" options
Cons: Overpriced for quailty of food, Food portion for price

Elevate Your Soul - Edit
When picturing what a Detroit Vegan Soul place might look like...I pictured some funky little house with a family vibe to it. What we walked into was more akin to a somewhat streamlined cafe with the ambiance of a 'quick..eat your lunch..get back to work' type of joint. The food was pretty tasty, but I wouldn't say it is anything most slightly seasoned vegans couldn't make at home. Very nice to discover while traveling, and a terrific place to take that meat loving friend/family/co-worker of yours. While there I was told everything is vegan and non-gmo..the menu said that it tries to use mainly organic items when available with no mention of anything being non-gmo..so I'm not sure which it is..what they said or what the menu said. All in all it was a nice little spot in a town that seems more open to veganism than most.
Pros: Vegan, Possibly non-gmo/organic

Phenomenal - Edit
Highly recommend the Sunday Brunch (all day). Try the Catfish Tofu & Grits, the Sweet Potato Stacks or the Tofu Scramble.
Amazing soups, salads, sandwiches and wraps. Great smoothies too!

delicious soul food - Edit
We went here for Sunday brunch. The restaurant was clean and modern. I really like the neighborhood it is in. My son enjoyed his granola fruit parfait and gave it an A. My husband had the waffles and tofu. He loved the salty fried tofu but felt the waffles were a bit dry. I loved my homestyle breakfast but the tofu scramble was a bit too salty and the potatoes had a bit too much oil. It was delicious though. The total for the three of us was around $30 which I found very reasonable. I would love to return to try their dinner dishes
Pros: clean modern interior , friendly service, reasonable prices
Cons: too much salt and oil

Very Nice - Edit
I found D.V.S. by searching for nearby vegan cuisine. I'm glad I found this quint little spot. I went on a Sunday. The atmosphere was pleasant. The service was quick and the food was delicious. I will be going back to try other menu options. This is a small venue. I wouldn't recommend it for large crowds.
Pros: Delicious Food, Menu options, The cozy atmosphere
Cons: Too small, The waitress was a little cold, Location questionable

Sooo good - Edit
Went there for the first time last night and was very impressed. To have a restaurant like this in Detroit is very exciting. The food was delicious and all vegan! The staff was very friendly as well. I really liked the simple and clean design of the interior.

Amazing food - Edit
I've been here a number of times and I have never had a bad dish. The Catfish Tofu is amazing and their sandwishes are also great. The atmosphere is really nice. The only bad thing is that sometimes the food takes a little long to make, but the great food makes up for it. The servers are really friendly too.
Pros: Friendly staff, Delicious food, Nice vibe
Cons: Service is sometimes slow

FANTASTIC FOOD IF YOU ARE ABLE TO BE SERVED!!! - Edit
I live in Alabama but I come to Detroit at least once or twice a quarter for business reasons. I had been looking forward to visiting this restaurant for months. On my first visit I had mac n cheese, greens, and the tofu catfish. Absolutely wonderful! It was a take out order so I did not experience the terrible service that it seems to be known for. I still recommended to two of my friends.
My second visit was on a Sunday. I called ahead as soon as my flight arrived in Detroit around 2:30 p.m. I was told that they could not take a phone order because they were backed up but I might be served if I came in person. I broke all kinds of speeding records and arrived at 3:20 p.m. I seriously wanted some delicious vegan food!!! I was turned away at the door and was told that they were not serving anymore customers period because they were backed up! Of course, I was pissed! I will give this restaurant only one more try!
Pros: Unbelievably delicious food, Seasoned well, Great variety
Cons: Slow or no service

My Apologies - Edit
My apologies to all the other fine vegan and vegetarian restaurants, past and present, that I have patronized, but this is my new favorite. My first visit was Friday night. My next visit was the night after. My third was the next afternoon. All told, I had 2 smoothies, 1 hot herbal tea, 4 meals, 1 appetizer/starter, 1 small cup of what one might consider tartar sauce, maple syrup, and 2 deserts. The total number of food items, not including the drinks and condiments, was 17. All items except one were amazing. My only problem was with the coleslaw that didn't suit my taste, and I only mention it, because it just doesn't seem fair that everything should be so perfect, or extremely close to it.
The wait staff and owners are as great as the food.
My third visit was with 2 friends, neither of whom are vegans or vegetarians. Both of them want to come back next Sunday.
I challenge anyone to find something that's less than amazing here.
I've been back several times since my previous review, and while it's still my favorite, they changed some recipes. The amazing sauce that they used for tartar sauce is now more like tartar sauces elsewhere. The coleslaw changed to one that I like.
The various cakes and muffins are by far the best anywhere. I do have one issue. Sometimes, someone in the kitchen is a little heavy handed with the salt shaker.

Delicious! - Edit
I went for Sunday breakfast and had the breakfast sandwich. AMAZING. I have never had vegan breakfast patties that tasted so good. Excellent service, awesome food and a good value. I will definitely go again.
Updated- I have been back a few times now and have enjoyed the soul platter, (although I found the green too salty on every occasion), the DVS burger was delicious, the Cesar salad is also yummy. I thought I'd like the BLT more than I did but the coconut bacon was too strong for me.
My husband and I love coming here and will continue to bring friends.
Pros: Friendly, Good value, Delicious food
Cons: Greens have been extra salty on every visit, Kitchen on the slower side

Amazing Food Experience! - Edit
We were in Detroit for just 2 days, but I wanted to make sure we checked this place out. So glad we did! The food was fabulous and our server was very attentive. I had the Soul Platter - can't believe how awesome the mac n cheez was and it's the first time I've ever had collard greens and they were wonderful. My mom had the BBQ tofu and loved it all. My daughter had the "catfish" tofu and it was spectacular! The tartar sauce was kick-a** - they could totally bottle and sell it! We will definitely go back the next time we're in Detroit!
Pros: Awesome Food, Attentive Server
Cons: Small Portions for Price

Future restaurant coming - Edit
I was at Detroit Vegan Soul's pop up in West Village in the fall. Currently DVS is closed for delivery services while they get ready to open a permanent location in the west village in spring 2013. Their foot was fantastic. I had mac 'n cheese, braised tempeh and greens. There was also a divine sweet tea with agave syrup. I am going to live there when they open. Get my cot ready!
