Sunday Brunch - Edit
My wife and I just visited this place for the first time with a couple of friends. It was a sunday brunch, so it was a limited menu, I enjoyed the Pepper steak, it was fantastic! Not a single complaint could be had with any of the food served to our table. One small error by the waitress, but it made no difference in the enjoyment. Service was almost as good as the outstanding food we were served. It was busy, but the wait was pleasant. We will be going back, it is worth the extra effort to cross the border from Canada.
Pros: Outstanding food, Very good service
Cons: Small, limited seating

Fabulous! - Edit
This was the very first vegan restaurant I ever went to when I went vegan about a year ago! I have since tried many places but this is still my favorite! The staff is unbelievably kind and helpful, and I have never had a single food that I don't like from DVS! If you're going to go on Sunday though plan to go early as they usually fill up soo quickly and run out of seats! My favorite thing to get is the bbq tempeh burger!
Pros: Delicious Food, Friendly Staff, Cute Location
Cons: Small

Always something new to try - Edit
I love DVS. The service is excellent, the location is great, and the food is delicious. I have had the Soul platter, the TLT with yam fries, a milkshake, cake, and carob cookies before. I will say sometimes the food is more salty and tastes different, maybe because a different cook was there that night or something. My favorite things to get are the raw collard wrap and the mac n cheese, plus the carob cookies.
Pros: delicious food, great service, great location
Cons: food quality varies depending on the cook

Absolutely lovely - Edit
Great friendly soul food place. The food here was all nicely done, not amazing, but very fresh and tasty. Service was absolutely amazing, so friendly and welcoming! Their menu is not huge, but varied enough to eat here relatively often. Loved it.
Pros: Service!

Makes my tummy happy - Edit
Relocating from California, the vegan me a of the world to Detroit would seemed to be problematic for a vegan.
This was my vegan restaurant that I visited and it was great. I've managed to become a regular in a few weeks.
When you go (and you will), get the smothered gravy loaf.

Hail Cesar! - Edit
The Cesar Chavez Salad is THE best vegan Caesar salad I've had, hands down! My dining partner agreed. As my main course I ordered the Soul Platter and the mac-n-cheese was the highlight of the dish for me. I love baked mac-n-cheese. It was super delicious. For dessert, I ordered the peach cobbler, and, oh my, was I in vegan dessert heaven!! Can I just say, holy cobbler!! If I lived in Detroit I would eat here all the time.
My elderly father joined me and my boyfriend and I could tell he was skeptical at first, but he admitted to really enjoying his meal. :) A great place for vegans and non-vegans!

Worth the Drive - Edit
We drove through Detroit at the end of our road trip just to hit DVS. We're glad we did! We had sweet potato cakes, vegan catfish and grits, waffles and tofu nuggets and a breakfast sandwich. All were great! We had a couple of interesting shakes and a delicious peach cobbler for dessert. Knowing we were from out of town the staff made sure to get us in just before closing which was much appreciated. DVS was second place in our family vacation restaurant war competition with near perfect scores.
Pros: great food, original dishes, friendly staff

It's O.K. - Edit
I find this place to be just ok. They overcharge for sub-par food, and don't give much for the price they charge. Some of the items are on the salty side as well. I'd say this would be your third option for vegan food in the city.
Pros: Environment, Nice "Soul food" options
Cons: Overpriced for quailty of food, Food portion for price

Elevate Your Soul - Edit
When picturing what a Detroit Vegan Soul place might look like...I pictured some funky little house with a family vibe to it. What we walked into was more akin to a somewhat streamlined cafe with the ambiance of a 'quick..eat your lunch..get back to work' type of joint. The food was pretty tasty, but I wouldn't say it is anything most slightly seasoned vegans couldn't make at home. Very nice to discover while traveling, and a terrific place to take that meat loving friend/family/co-worker of yours. While there I was told everything is vegan and non-gmo..the menu said that it tries to use mainly organic items when available with no mention of anything being non-gmo..so I'm not sure which it is..what they said or what the menu said. All in all it was a nice little spot in a town that seems more open to veganism than most.
Pros: Vegan, Possibly non-gmo/organic

Phenomenal - Edit
Highly recommend the Sunday Brunch (all day). Try the Catfish Tofu & Grits, the Sweet Potato Stacks or the Tofu Scramble.
Amazing soups, salads, sandwiches and wraps. Great smoothies too!

delicious soul food - Edit
We went here for Sunday brunch. The restaurant was clean and modern. I really like the neighborhood it is in. My son enjoyed his granola fruit parfait and gave it an A. My husband had the waffles and tofu. He loved the salty fried tofu but felt the waffles were a bit dry. I loved my homestyle breakfast but the tofu scramble was a bit too salty and the potatoes had a bit too much oil. It was delicious though. The total for the three of us was around $30 which I found very reasonable. I would love to return to try their dinner dishes
Pros: clean modern interior , friendly service, reasonable prices
Cons: too much salt and oil

Very Nice - Edit
I found D.V.S. by searching for nearby vegan cuisine. I'm glad I found this quint little spot. I went on a Sunday. The atmosphere was pleasant. The service was quick and the food was delicious. I will be going back to try other menu options. This is a small venue. I wouldn't recommend it for large crowds.
Pros: Delicious Food, Menu options, The cozy atmosphere
Cons: Too small, The waitress was a little cold, Location questionable

Sooo good - Edit
Went there for the first time last night and was very impressed. To have a restaurant like this in Detroit is very exciting. The food was delicious and all vegan! The staff was very friendly as well. I really liked the simple and clean design of the interior.
