Completely vegan cafe - Edit

It's labeled as vegetarian but it is fully vegan. It's my first try and I can say it's a bit expensive for what they serve.

Pros: Ful Vegan menu

Best Vegan Comfort Food - Edit

My favourite place for vegan comfort food in Hamilton. The staff is always super friendly, the decor is laid back and comfortable, and the food is delicious. When I was going to McMaster I would come here every Wednesday night to do my homework over a coffee and some mac and cheese. If you need some suggestions on what to eat, the nachos are always a solid choice. The one thing I know some people will have an issue with is that there's no wifi, so you'll actually have to talk to your family or maybe read a book in the 10 minutes you wait for your food.

Pros: Friendly Staff, Delicious Food, Affordable

Cons: No Wifi

Absolutely Underwhelming - Edit

In an effort to support the vegetarian restaurants in our area, my wife and I decided to have lunch at Democracy.
Here's the first thing that bugs me....I don't mind paying for food when I order it, but it really bothers me when the credit card machine prompts me for a tip amount. I mean why am I tipping now? I don't now if the food is any good. I haven't received any service yet so I don't know if it's worth a tip or not but I still leave a tip because I don't know what will happen if I don't leave one at that time. So that's the first thing.
We ordered our meals. I had a pierogi pizza and my wife had a smashed chickpea sandwich. We also ordered cauliflower "wings" as an appetizer.
They have all sorts of craft beer, but their wine selection is limited. The choices were an organic blend red or an organic blend white. No other options.
While waiting for our meal, the restaurant received a food delivery which meant the back door was open and a cold breeze blew through the restaurant necessitating zipping up our jackets and putting our hands in our pockets until the door was once again closed. Delivery schedule needs to be changed for customer comfort.
After waiting 40 minutes for our food, I asked a server about it and she brought it out to us immediately.
The food was lukewarm so I can only assume that it had been sitting on a counter for some time before coming out to us.
The cauliflower wing appetizer came out at the same time as the entrees so we ended up having to eat everything at once.
The "wings" were tasty in a light batter but needed to be eaten quickly before the sauce soaked in and they became soggy. Sauce on the side would have been a better idea.
The chick pea sandwich was strictly average and came to us without the lettuce and tomato that we paid extra for so it had to go back to the kitchen to be corrected.
The pierogi pizza wasn't worth the wait. Again it was strictly average. I've made better myself at home.
My sense is that this restaurant is not run by professional restaurateurs but by amateurs trying to fulfill a lifelong dream of owning a vegetarian restaurant. They have the passion but not the expertise to run a successful restaurant.
This restaurant seems to get a lot of walk in traffic buying coffee and baked goods which they seem to do well. My suggestion to them would be to stick to what they're good at and abandon the restaurant because it's bound to fail if other diners have the same experience as we did.

Mediocre Breakfast Experience - Edit

Went for breakfast, and our food was nothing exceptional. Had a vegan breakfast burrito which was not very good at all, vegan chili and a salad which was nice, a muffin which was great, and a latte which was as expected. Restaurant was very cold, making it uncomfortable for me and others dining. I'm told this is more of a breakfast place, but after that my first impression I would not agree. I would like to try their dinner menu, as it looks a lot nicer with many more options than breakfast. Would not recommend, but I will try again.

favourite restaurant in Hamilton - Edit

This is my favourite place to go. I take all my non-vegan friends here and they are never disappointed. The pierogi pizza and Buffalo tofu sandwich are a must!

Apparently they recently went completely vegan, after being 'vegan-friendly."

Love - Edit

Love the vegan menu and they are very accommodating to anyone with a gluten intolerance as well. I love the atmosphere and the seasonal menu. Their recent specials are to die for! Perogie Pizza and Mac n' Cheese! So good. Plus the usual vegan baked goods. I'm loving the Cauliflower Wings and Margarita pizza right now. Plus they are super family friendly and in one of the best neighbourhoods in Hamilton.

I will miss this place when I move - Edit

They have the best cauliflower wings and a great 100% vegan menu (and pesto pizza!). Not everything is vegan apart from that, but it's still plenty of delicious options. At winter, nothing's better than a hot drink with a cinnamon bun. Plus, the place is nice and cozy with a beautiful atmosphere and a great staff. They also have a book exchange shelf. And they have dinosaurs toys.

Pros: A 100% vegan menu, Local and/or organic food, Cozy

Separate Vegan Menu and Friendly Staff! - Edit

Their main menu is 100% vegan. They have other non-vegan menu items that change and are listed on a chalk board that changes, but the steady items are vegan! yay!

I got the cauliflower wings for the table, which were phenomenal and everyone enjoyed.

I also got the Hail Seitan sandwich which was very flavourful.

All in all I will be back here as much as I can. Prices aren't too bad and it's very close to my work. Definitely a win.

Pros: Vegan Menu, Friendly Staff, Vegan baked goods

A great little place - Edit

I really like the Democracy Coffee House! The place has a nice vibe and there are lots of treats. We went in today for a sandwich and both my husband and I really enjoyed our choices. I had the pulled mushrooms, and he had the tempeh one. They were both big and satisfying. I could not eat all of mine but my husband was happy about this because he got to eat the last quarter.
We don't go out a lot - but this is our "go to" place in Hamilton.

Pros: Good food (gluten free choices too), Nice vibe, Close to the Goodness Me!

Cons: Parking can be tight, Sometimes it can be a bit full
