A top co-op - Edit

Love this place! While a lot of co-ops are small, this one is huge by comparison. They've got the same type of departments as regular grocery stores (yes, sadly that means meats, too). Their produce department is wonderful; lots of variety, much of it locally grown, and all but a tiny section is organic. They carry wine, beer, snack foods, shelf foods, coffee, great selection of teas, household goods, personal care products, cosmetics, and so on. The supplement department carries a large selection, and no one can beat the Co-op's bulk spices and bins. I've never met a sourpuss or grouchy employee as they all seem to enjoy their jobs. Sure, the Co-op can be more expensive than a regular grocery store, but don't forget the old saying, "You get what you pay for".

Pros: great selection, top quality products, parking is a breeze

Essential Groceries for veg'ns - Edit

We are big co-op fans here. They overcharge for ordinary grocery store items and they're not perfect, but where else in town can you find *selections* of things like tempeh, Soygurt, nut milks, vegan coconut-milk-based ice cream (soooo much better than the soy & rice ice creams) etc. etc? It would be much harder for me to cook veg at home without the Co-op. The Co-op is and feels like a community-based business; it's much more comfortable than the big supermarkets.

The bulk section is also really nice. They have a thorough selection of herbs, spices, and teas, including items that are not sold at the International Store.

There are some minor drawbacks - the meat counter at the back reeks (but I'm sensitive to the smell of raw meat), and the deli has just a few mediocre veg selections (do they taste what they sell?) However, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Pros: Wide selection of veg'n foods, Thorough bulk-food section, Community atmosphere

Cons: High prices on many (not all) items, Stinky meat counter in the back, Veg deli food is mediocre

Huge selection - Edit

This place is big for a health food store - the size of a regular supermarket. Yeah, some things are a bit pricey, but generally with this type of food that's what you get. In comparison to Whole Foods, they're a little bit cheaper, and it's nice that you can find a whole variety of health foods you can't get elsewhere. They carry some "regular" foods too (like Oreos).

Pros: variety, staff is friendly

Fun to look around - Edit

The Davis Co-op is a staple in the Davis community. The atmosphere is fun and down-to-earth. The premade deli items are delicious (tofu salads, lasagna, etc) and I'd recommend it for a picnic or to-go lunch. There is a nice selection of specialty items but overall it's a bit too pricey to do a majority of grocery shopping.

Pros: yummy food, lots of veg options, fun looking around

Cons: expensive
