Gift shop and vegetarian restaurant at the Daming Temple. Caters primarily to Buddhist residents in the region. The menu is in Chinese. NOTE: The restaurant is inside the temple; 30rmb entrance fee to get inside.
When travelling in China, there is a decent chance that you can find a vegan meal in close proximity to a Buddhist Temple. This is the case when you are in the City of Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province about 1 hour train ride from Nanjing. Daming Temple is known for a famous monk, Jianzhen, who studied the sutras and initiated people into monkhood here in the first year of the Tianbao reign of the Tang Dynasty (742 C.E.) before he left for Japan.
You will order from a Chinese language menu at the counter and food will be served to you at a table. While I cannot read Chinese characters, we were accompanied by a tour guide and translator during our stay in Yangzhou. We ordered the sweet and sour pork, sauteed chinese spinach and stir fried mixed vegetables with lotus root, wood ear mushrooms and celery. We also ordered two bowls of steamed white rice. In our experience, brown rice is not easily found in China. The food was very good and nicely presented. The average price of a dish is only 29 RMB. Unless you can read Chinese characters or can bring someone with you who can, you will have difficulty finding someone at the restaurant who can help translate the menu. The restaurant and gift shop is adjacent to the 9 story Qiling Pagoda and is easily spotted from a fair distance from the temple complex.
