Promising Vegan Menu, but Disappointing Overall Experience

A friend enthusiastically told me about this restaurant because it offers an entire page of vegan dishes - which is quite impressive for a traditional german restaurant. Curious to try it, we decided to visit together.
The restaurant itself is very beautiful. Christmas lights were still up, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere. It’s fairly large and also has a spacious courtyard, yet it’s clearly very popular. We visited on a weekday without a reservation and were lucky to get a table for 1.5 hours.
Upon entering, it quickly became apparent that this is a rather upscale place, which is also reflected in the prices. On the positive side, the vegan menu really does exist and offers several options. We chose the Frankfurter plant-based schnitzel with green sauce and fried potatoes and the fully plant-based “duck” Gröschd’l with homemade vegan spätzle and salad.
What I genuinely appreciated is the strong focus on regional and sustainable ingredients. The restaurant communicates transparently where products come from - and uses Planted products for its plant-based alternatives, a brand I personally really like. This level of transparency and sustainability is commendable and something I wish more restaurants would adopt.
Unfortunately, this is where the positives start to fade. While the apple juice was expensive, it was excellent. The food arrived quickly and tasted good but despite the sustainability aspect, I find the prices hard to justify for what is being served. The Planted schnitzels, for instance, are products one can easily prepare at home. Beyond the green sauce, which was well made, there wasn’t much culinary craftsmanship that would warrant the high cost. The fried potatoes were not crispy enough for my taste, and while the spätzle were very good, the portion sizes overall felt too small.
After about an hour, we were told that guests with reservations had arrived, which created unnecessary pressure to finish quickly. We were well within the originally stated timeframe and would have left on time without any issues. While I understand the challenges of managing reservations, this was handled poorly and made us feel unwelcome.
Overall, I left quite disappointed. While the concept sounds too good to be true, the experience unfortunately confirmed that impression. I can’t recommend this restaurant. Just around the corner, Der Eichkatzerl offers fewer vegan options but much fairer prices - and in my opinion, by far the best vegan schnitzel in the city.

Traditional Frankfurt cuisine

Super tasty veganized versions of traditional regional dishes. I highly recommend going there.

The Frankfurter schnitzel with green sauce is perfection. Atmosphere and service are great. It's giving classic Frankfurt. Have an apple wine or a "sauer gespritzen" while you're there to complete the experience.

Best vegan German food in Frankfurt

If you only visit a single restaurant in Frankfurt, and you want to taste some vegan versions of the local cuisine, this one here is the place you should go. Or alternatively to one of their partner restaurants just a couple minutes by foot - Affentorschänke or Drei Streubern.

The vegan Grüne Sosse tastes fantastic and exactly like the original - get it with Bratkartoffeln for a small meal. I also loved the Schnitzel they served with it, which makes for a very satisfying main. They use a very tasty plant meat, and also had vegan steak and vegan duck on the menu, which I did not try. My favourite was the home made Spätzle with Mushrooms, which was exceptionally well prepared. Nice forest mushrooms, finely sliced onions, and a slightly creamy but still light sauce. German food at its finest, and really some of the best vegan German food I have been served in a restaurant.

The one thing missing was a vegan dessert - I am hoping they will implement it soon, as their dessert options already have some components that could be veganizable very easily, like fried cinnamon apples and cherry compote. Given how elaborate the vegan savoury menu is, adding some vegan vanilla sauce or ice cream shouldn't be hard for them.

Still, for me this is the best place in Frankfurt currently, in particular if you want to sample the local cuisine. Also, their Eppelwoi (local cider) selection is probably the best I've seen anywhere.

Pros: local vegan food, very high quality, great Eppelwoi selection

Cons: No vegan dessert - hopefully soon!
