Serves meat, vegan options available. Hawaiian food restaurant with vegan plate option: kahlua or teriyaki jack with rice, vegetable lumpia, and mac salad. Open Mon-Sat 11:00am-6:00pm.
I should’ve read the previous review. They’re nice enough to leave 2 stars, but its not even deserving of that. I got both flavors (Kalua and teriyaki) and they tasted the same. Like a mouthful of vinegar and salt. The salad and rice were bland but I was able to use them as a sort of “chaser” to get the jackfruit down. We tried to finish the food, my moms stomach started to hurt from the acidity. Homestly, they should just stop serving the dish.
This review is primarily about their vegan plate lunch. The vegan plate 😅😅 was not good. I only took a small bite of the mac salad and a good bit of that was raw carrot, cut a bit thick. The vegan kalua had a strong smoked smell. And I thought, *yum* however with some caution, I cook with liquid smoke and I recognized that it was liquid smoke. A little goes a long way. I took a bite of the jackfruit and whoa, it tasted as if they had simply DRENCHED the jackfruit in liquid smoke. Possibly they marinated it in the liquid smoke? Visually the jackfruit looked uncooked. Others tasted it at the table and agreed it was inedible. Sour/bitter. I guess whoever originally created this dish isn’t around to pass on some wisdom on the prep. Doesn’t matter, any decent cook should know better than to serve that to anyone.
The guy at the register was extremely kind and offered some other options. I felt comfortable speaking up for myself and I got zero pushback on stating the food was not to my liking. I asked if the teriyaki is made with the same base and my understanding was it’s the same. So I didn’t want to get that dish and it’s the same situation just with a teriyaki sauce? He was very patient. In the end, I said I would finish my lumpia roll and that was enough for me. The chicken salad looked quite delicious, I wish they had a tofu with that sort of huli huli flavor on it. I would have definitely ordered that. I LOVE tofu.
I appreciate they have a vegan option. I only need one, but the one needs to be edible. One viable option is all us vegans ask for. The jackfruit can be prepped in advance and even frozen into single portions. So possibly that could be an option. Tofu musubis are good too.
The parking lot is easy and they have two EVgo chargers.
At the 7/11 s in Hawaii you can get tofu musubis and let’s be honest, tofu us cheap. I’d totally stop in just to grab a musubis if they had them here. And there are a few places on the island that make vegan Mochiko chicken, Umeke Market!!! I’d break my neck to come order a plate of that!
